The BTL Y-wing starfighter, built by Koensayr Manufacturing, was a mainstay of the Alliance Starfighter Corps. It was often used as an assault bomber to attack enemy capital ships directly in conjunction with the later B-wing starfighters.

Known as a "wishbone" to Rebel Alliance and New Republic pilots, the Y-wing starfighter was deployed as a fighter-bomber, designed to fight its way to its objective, deliver its payload of high explosives, and fight its way out again. Its weaponry included two laser cannons, two ion cannons, and two proton torpedo launchers. An astromech droid, such as an R2 unit, could be plugged into a socket behind the cockpit to act as a co-pilot and manage the ship's various systems.

The Y-wing was a resilient, well-shielded craft, but was slow and ungainly compared to other Alliance fighters. Its deficiencies were partly compensated for by the heavy proton torpedo load it could carry, and its ability to paralyze craft with ion cannon fire without destroying them, unique until the B-wing starfighter was introduced after the Battle of Yavin. In addition to the Rebel Alliance, many planetary defense forces, mercenaries, and pirates fielded the craft.

It was a rugged design, but it had some design flaws requiring constant maintenance, which led to many aggravated maintenance crews getting fed up with constantly having to remove the superficial hull plating and disposing of it altogether. Due to this, many Y-wings had no hull plating (except on the cockpit), exposing the internals of the main hull.

In at least one Y-wing, the cockpit could be ejected by the pilot from the engines and the rest of the ship. This was used when the ship was on a surface. After the cockpit was disconnected, it could be driven on the surface. It is unknown whether this was a standard feature or a customization.[9]

Despite its shortcomings in speed and maneuverability compared to space superiority fighters such as the X-wing (or especially compared to interceptors like the A-wing), the Y-wing was an extremely durable craft, with heavier armor and shielding. The Y-wing also had a larger warhead magazine. The Y-wing was not a sluggish fighter overall, as its speed and agility exceeded that of its intended replacement, the B-wing.

X-wing starfighters and A-wing interceptors were used to distract enemy fighters and the enemy ships' gunners to allow the Y-wings and B-wings to focus their fire on capital ships. This tactic was similar to the A-wing Slash, which involved solely X-wings and A-wings.


There were three common designs, one during the Clone Wars and two during the height of the Galactic Civil War, as well as other less common variants.

The first known model was the BTL-B, which served during the Clone Wars. The Republic made good use of the model in the beginning of the conflict. The BTL-B had a bubble turret, which swivelled 360 degrees and provided the gunner with a clear view of the surrounding space.[10] On later models, this bubble feature was replaced with a turret operated from within the main cockpit.[1]

The BTL-S3 was a two-man strike fighter, and was the most common Y-wing configuration.[11] The weapons systems officer typically operated the ion cannon turret when needed.[12]

Luke Skywalker used this variant on his mission to Panna in 0 ABY,[13] as did Leia Organa and C-3PO on their journey to the Circarpous system.[14]

Many Y-wings of this variant were modified with defensive rapid-fire blaster turrets replacing the ion cannon turret and particle cannons instead of the dual laser cannons on the nose.[15] These Y-wings were used as heavy capital ship destroyers, and were eventually phased out by the new B-wing starfighters.

The BTL-A4 was a one-man version of the S3, which removed the gunner position and locked down the overhead ion cannon.

It was used commonly by pirate, mercenary, and private defense forces, and therefore was also used by the early Rebel Alliance as the primary starfighter for bombing and disabling roles. As the BTL-S3 became the primary Y-Wing variant of the Rebel forces, the A4 was still kept in many units as a supplementary craft. However, Red and Gold Squadrons favored the A4 variant of the Y-Wing[16] and used it with distinction in several climactic battles, such as the Battle of Yavin, the capture of the Death Star II plans from the Imperial freighter Suprosa[17][18], and the subsequent Battle of Endor.

An additional (though less common) BTL-A4 variant known as the "LongProbe," designated BTL-A4 (LP), was equipped with a nav computer, backup hyperdrive, advanced scanners, and an extended fuel supply in place of the weapons systems officer.[6] While this was not enough to make it into a true scout craft, its heavy armament gave it a better chance of survival and allowed it to occasionally cause damage to the targets it was scouting.[6] The LongProbe was used primarily for long range scouting missions.[19] On such missions, LongProbes operated in recon teams known as LongProbe Y-wing Recon Teams. One such team was sent to Alashan to check a Rebel archeological dig that failed to report back.[20] In contrast with most other Y-wings, this variant was considered too valuable to remove from active duty by the New Republic.[21]

Courier variant

Alliance Intelligence utilized specially modified Y-wings for long-range courier duty. This variant of the BTL-S3 had no ion cannons, which were removed for baggage space, a larger main cockpit area able to carry up to five people, and possessed a special canopy split down the middle for rapid embarking or disembarking of a passenger during brief landings. This canopy also allowed the passenger to bail out at high altitude and paraglide to their destination. The customization was rare enough that no special designation was created for these modified Y-wings.[6] Some of the last Rebel soldiers to evacuate Hoth used Y-Wings of this type.[22][23] The variant was used by Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker on missions to Velmor and Ventooine.[24] A similarly-modified Y-wing was used by Skywalker while he was working for the Senate Planetary Intelligence Network and helping the Jedi Prince Ken.[25]

Koensayr Manufacturing designed the Y-wing for use by the Galactic Republic in the Clone Wars, and although the BTL-B model saw combat, as flown by Anakin Skywalker and a group of clone troopers to disable the Malevolence,[10] the more commonly known BTL-S3 was too late.[6] When the Galactic Empire declined to buy the design, Koensayr began selling to various parties. Thus the fighter ended up with Rebel groups early on in the Galactic Civil War.[6]

BTL-S3 Y-wings were in service at least as early as 18 BBY, and it was a critical vessel in the Rebellion's early days, bearing the brunt of all of its early space battles with the Empire. The Rebels lost more Y-wings in the Galactic Civil War than any other fighter, due to the simple fact that they flew more Y-wings than any other fighter. Y-wings also found their way into pirate and mercenary forces.

Even after the introduction of the X-wing, which largely succeeded it in most roles, it continued to serve as an important part of the Alliance arsenal. The Y-wing was best suited for heavy assault missions, due to its larger warhead payload and stronger hull and shields, while the X-wing and A-wing were more focused on dealing with enemy starfighters.

It was also invaluable for disabling craft since it was for a time the only starfighter with ion cannons. The more heavily armed and more advanced B-wing was supposed to supplant the Y-wing for such assault and capture missions. However, the Y-wing still retained an edge over the B-wing in several areas, notably speed, agility, and armor; it also had a sleeker profile. As the Y-wing was a proven design and easier to pilot than the B-wing, which was available in limited numbers, the Y-wing continued to play a role as late as the Battle of Endor.

By the time of Grand Admiral Thrawn's campaign against the New Republic, Y-wings were relegated to planetary defense duties, leaving attack missions to X-wings, A-wings, and B-wings. Their age made them more difficult to repair, and many expected them to leave service as newer fighters came into production.

One exception to this general demotion of Y-wings from active duty was the BTL-A4 "Longprobe" scout, which filled a vital niche in the reconnaissance role. Although partially replaced by the T-65BR X-wing variant, these fighters were considered too valuable to withdraw. Instead, they were upgraded, extending their usefulness until the final years of the long conflict with the Empire, if not beyond.[21]

Additionally, stubborn old Y-wings, in varying states of repair, were still found throughout the Galaxy. During the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Fia of the Galantos Guard employed Y-wings in defense of their homeworld, though pilots of the Galactic Alliance referred to the starfighters as "old" and "clumsy". Other Y-wings found their way into private ownership, and continued to fly during the Second Galactic Civil War.[26][27]

Famous Y-wing pilots included Jon Vander, who led Gold Squadron during the Battle of Yavin; Davish Krail, who had flown them for five years; and Horton Salm, one of the New Republic's foremost Y-wing pilots. Salm led the Alliance's Gray Squadron at the Battle of Endor, surviving the run through the second Death Star's superstructure, later leading Aggressor Wing through the Battle of Brentaal IV which saw him promoted to the rank of general; he continued to command the Aggressors during the First Battle of Ciutric IV.

Behind the scenes

Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections erroneously refers to the BTL-A4 Y-wing starfighter as the "BLT-A4 Y-wing". This error was fixed in the latest book, Star Wars: Complete Cross-Sections.

In Star Wars: Battlefront II, Y-wings are also armed with proton bombs.

In The Star Wars Holiday Special - The Story of the Faithful Wookiee, the Y-wing used by Luke Skywalker has flotation devices built into it which activated, whether automatically or manually, when it crashed into the planetwide mud ocean.

Though the Y-wing is the next certification step up from the Z-95 Headhunter for Alliance Starfighter Pilots, the Y-wing's high mass capacity and its co-pilot turret make it a powerful choice for pilots of any level. Strong defenses and/or powerful weapons can more than make up for the slower speeds and sometimes sluggish maneuvering of the Y-wing. When grouped with X-wings and A-wings, Y-wings can be deadly and put up a long fight.

Growing increasingly outdated with the advent of sleeker, more powerful starfighters, the Y-wing nonetheless has a proud track record of service in the Rebel Alliance. The sturdy fighter-bomber gets its name from its shape: a reinforced central spar connects the cockpit to a cross-spar. At each end of the cross-spar rests a powerful engine nacelle, which houses the fighter's sublight and hyperdrive engines. Just aft of the cockpit module is the astromech droid socket.

The Y-wing's primary weapons are twin forward-firing laser cannons, housed in a recessed slot in the front of the cockpit module. A secondary weapon is a turret mounted paired set of cannons. Though many Y-wings fly as single-pilot fighters, some sport a two-seat configuration with a rear-facing tailgunner operating the turret canons.

The Y-wing also carries proton torpedo launchers. During the Battles of Yavin and Endor, Y-wing squadrons were influential in helping defeat the Death Star threats. A Y-wing brandishes its squadron colors and markings on its main cockpit module and the forward tips of the engine nacelles.

Y-wing starfighters hold the dubious record of being the most-destroyed military vessel in the Alliance arsenal. This is not due to any design flaw in the Koensayr starfighter. Rather, it is the result of it being the most common starfighter the Alliance had at its disposal during the Galactic Civil War.

Predating the Incom X-wing, the Koensayr Y-wing figured prominently in the Rebellion's early skirmishes. They proved their value in the Battle of Vnas at Duro, and the Battle of Ord Biniir. During the Siege of Ank Ki'Shor, Y-wing fighters saved thousands of lives by holding off attacking TIE Bombers.

The Alliance maintains two basic types of Y-wings, the single-seater BTL-A4 and the double-seater BTL-S3. In the two-seater S3, the gunner sits facing rear, controlling the turret-mounted ion cannon. Both pilot and gunner are protected by a pair of Koensayr ballistic ejection seats that automatically eject both crew members. The A4 features Guidenhauser ejection systems like their X-wing counterparts.

The twin massive Koensayr R200 Ion Jet engines (rated at 250 KTU) propel the starfighter in realspace, and each engine nacelle is topped with sophisticated sensor arrays. In an atmosphere, these ion fission engines work in conjunction with recessed repulsorlift generators to attain speeds of 1,000 kilometers per hour. The Y-wing's maneuverability comes from a pair of thruster control jets in the aft-face of the central spar. Additional agility is afforded by disk-vectrals set in the end of the engine nacelles to redirect thrust.

The Y-wing's R300-H hyperdrive motivator yields a Class One performance on standard astrogation routes. The S3 model does not have a hyperdrive backup. In the BTL-A4 Longprobe variant, the gunner's station is replaced with a nav computer and backup systems. The slower backup is equivalent to a Class Six hyperdrive.

Hyperdrive, repulsordrive, and sublight systems are controlled via the Subpro NH-7 flight control avionics package. The Y-wing draws power from Thiodyne O3-R cryogenic power cells which fuel the internal ionization reactor.

Perhaps the one thing fighter jockeys on both side of the war will agree on is that the Y-wing can take a beating. Its durable titanium reinforced Alusteel alloy hull proved a surprise to early enemy pilots who, confident that they had lined up the Y-wing in their targetting crosshairs, failed to destroy it with a snap-shot. Only by repeatedly dogging the Y-wing will a pilot's lasers cut through its hull.

This reputation for being tough, as well as its ground-hugging attack bomber mission profiles, have caused faster fighter pilots to nickname the Y-wing a "wallowing pig."

The Y-wing is designated an attack fighter, giving it a wide range of combat applications. Capable of respectable performance in one-on-one fighter engagements, its durable spaceframe is also well-suited to carry heavy-armaments. With little or no modifications, many Alliance units use Y-wing fighters for bombing craft. In the later years of the Galactic Civil War, Y-wings began to be replaced by B-wing starfighters. This newer fighter boasted similarly strong shields and hull, and devastatingly powerful projectile, laser and ion weaponry. The B-wing took years to replace the Y-wing, however, since there were so many of the older craft in service.

Y-wings were relocated from front-line combat service to base protection and on raids on outlying Imperial convoys. Many Y-wings have been pushed into courier duty for Intelligence services. This is where the most interesting Y-wing variants can be found. Some courier Y-wings have done away with the ion weapons, replacing the cannon power systems with luggage space. These fighters feature special split canopies for faster ingress or egress when landed (or even, as reported by some, high-altitude exits). Some modified Y-wing fighters have detachable cockpits that served as repulsor-powered escape vehicles.

Y-wing componentry has made itself into other Alliance hardware. The cockpit of the modified T-47 snowspeeder is a modified Y-wing fighter cockpit refit. This expedites training due to the familiarity most pilots have with the control layout. The T-47 also features refitted sections of Y-wing armor along its hull.

The early Colin Cantwell concept models built of the Y-wing featured an immense bubble turret dome for a gunner to sit in. The limitations of bluescreen technology at the time made such a dome impractical --- it would be impossible to shoot a miniature with a clear dome and have that dome register properly on film. Subsequent iterations of the Y-wing concept did away with the fragile-looking compartment.

The book, Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections, revealed that brand new off-the-assembly line Y-wings feature smoother coverings over its otherwise exposed cross-spar and fuselage. The text explains that Alliance engineers removed the cosmetic coverings to better service the fighter.
