This article is about the species. For the slayer monster, see Skeletal Wyvern.

Wyverns (Draconis Ossis) are an extinct species of reptilian dragon-like creatures. Today, only their undead forms can still be found.

Biology

The wyvern was a relative of the dragon, although they also seem to be closely related to lizards. Like the dragon, wyverns were capable of flight, using the two wings mounted on their backs. Wyverns were considerably smaller than dragons, however, standing only slightly taller than the average human. Perhaps their most distinct contrast to the dragon was their lack of front legs. Instead, the wyvern possessed small claws on the ends of their wings.

A mostly-intact skeletal wyvern.

Most wyvern remains can be found in the icy mountains of Asgarnia. This has led to speculation as to how the wyverns, unable to sustain their own body temperature, could survive in such cold climates. Two theories have been proposed; either that Asgarnia was much colder entering the God Wars of the Third Age, or that the wyvern was able to produce fire internally much like a dragon.

Although their diet remains largely unknown, it is likely they were carnivores and, like the dragon, ate livestock such as cattle and sheep. It is also possible that they fed on metal.

Wyverns were, unlike dragons, capable of internally creating ice, which they used as a powerful projectile weapon. Their body heat also remained unnaturally low, even after their death; bones found today remain slightly below room temperature. They also emit a very faint magical aura, suggesting the wyverns were at least slightly magically-imbued.

Habitat

Wyvern remains have been found only in Asgarnia, such as on White Wolf Mountain and Ice Mountain. Their animated corpses have also been found in the caves beneath Thurgo's Peninsula, suggesting the area was much colder in years past.

Extinction

The cause of the wyvern's extinction is unknown. Some speculate they played an important role in the God Wars, and that their use as beasts of war may have reduced their numbers to near extinction. It is also possible that climate changes, perhaps brought on by the wars (but possibly completely unrelated) eventually reduced the wyverns' habitable areas to too small a number for such predatorial animals.

A display in the Varrock Museum concerning the wyverns.

Odd wear patterns have been found on the bones of the animals, patterns which could have only occurred following the creatures' death.

795 Hit points
515 Experience points per kill

Summon/Convince: --/-- (Illusionable)
Abilities: Melee (0-120) (poisons you, starting from up to 24), Poison Wave (starts from up to 12hp per turn), Musical Wave (causes Drunkenness for up to 25 seconds), Self Healing, Haste.
Pushable:
Push Objects:
Est. Max. Damage: 140 hp per turn
Immune To: Earth, Invisibility, Drunkenness
Strong To: Energy (-20%), Ice (-10%)
Neutral To: Physical, Holy, Death, Fire, Drown?, Life Drain
Weak To:
Sounds: "Shriiiek".
Behavior: They run away at deep yellow health. They can retarget and move items that are in their way, though they themselves cannot be pushed. Their drunkenness is VERY heavy, but lasts for a very short time. They are often found in packs.
Field Notes: Some scholars consider the wyvern a distant cousin of the dragon, though this is far from truth. The wyvern we know today is the result of constant breeding of some significantly smaller, only mildly poisonous flying lizards.
Location:
Strategy: Knights can kill a wyvern around level 30 with skills between 65/65 and 75/75, depending on the equipment worn and fighting stance. For blocking, 60/60 would be enough. Level matters more than skills because of their poison attack. Stay diagonal to avoid the poison and musical waves. Avoid wasting energy fields because it's likely you'll kill them fast enough without them, and you could step on your own field while moving around.

Paladins can hunt wyverns at 40 distance (60 is recommended), shooting arrows or bolts while trying to avoid poison wave. If poisoned, use antidote as soon as possible to keep your health from being drained. (It's quite likely you'll receive no other damage.) You should consider wearing a Dwarven Ring, because if you become drunk and can't run away you'll be receiving melee damage. Fighting wyverns at low level and about 55 distance is one of the fastest and safest ways a paladin can level because they give good experience. As a guide, the best place for a lower level paladin to solo wyverns is in the field north of the Edron Dragon Lair. There are two spawns total and plenty of room to run them. A level 30 paladin with 60 distance using a standard bow can expect to kill, on average, 1 wyvern for every 20 arrows shot. Start at the north and draw the wyvern southward as you shoot. Because there is so much room to maneuver, you can easily avoid the poison wave. The musical wave is even simpler to stay away from, as it doesn't project very far. As described here, a paladin can kill a wyvern without taking any damage. Accordingly, in this locale, a Dwarven Ring is not really necessary. While waiting for respawn, make sure you kill the poachers in the northeast woods as they routinely drop arrows, which helps to keep your ammo stocked.

Mages can kill them easily around level 30 with fireballs or flame strikes. Lower level spell casters can shoot the fire field rune to "soften it up" and help kill the wyvern faster. Heal with exura gran or consider a mana shield. Mages often summon demon skeletons or monks to kill wyverns, while shooting with an appropriate rod or wand, depending on their level and vocation. Using death strikes is also a consideration. You can hunt these with a low level team, consisting of a blocker (lvl 25+) and a shooter. Another way to hunt these creatures is to get a group of 3 or 4 people and go to a single spawn, like the one near Venore. Simply have the strongest go up first, followed by the others. Each person should be level 15+ or they will die. Lure the creature to a spot where everyone can stand diagonally. Make sure each of you has exura or exura gran, and exana pox or its poison will kill you. Just attack until it runs away, and make sure you stand at a good angle where the poison wave won't affect you.

Depending on your vocation and how much room you have, using a Silver Amulet and a Dwarven Ring is a good idea to reduce poison damage and prevent becoming drunk.

Loot: 0-75 gp, 0-3 Dragon Ham, Gemmed Book, Strong Health Potion, Bag (semi-rare), 0-2 Power Bolt (semi-rare), Emerald Bangle (semi-rare), Wyvern Talisman (semi-rare), Wand of Inferno (rare), Small Sapphire (rare), Wyvern Fang (very rare). (Loot Statistics)

Overview

Wyvern is an enemy group in City of Villains. They are a private agency dedicated to eliminating problems Freedom Corps hasn't or won't deal with. Publicly, Wyvern is a private security agency hired by Paragon's wealthiest families and owned by Delia Huntley. What isn't known by the public is that Wyvern was founded by Justin Sinclair, aka Manticore, who also funds their activities. Not even the Freedom Phalanx is aware of this. Manticore created the group to carry out tasks that Freedom Corps is unwilling to perform. This group is walking the line between mercenary and hero. They are heroic in their goals, but the means in which they achieve them are questionable.

Background

Wyvern official info ( Copied from the City of Heroes official website [1]) :

According to public record, Wyvern is a private security agency hired by Paragon’s wealthiest families. Yet the public face, upheld by owner Delia Huntley, masks the true nature of this dangerous strike force.

Behind the facade, Wyvern is in fact the dark arm of Manticore’s crusade for justice. Justin Sinclair, aka Manticore, was increasingly frustrated by the limitations placed upon the heroes of Paragon City, and so he created Wyvern to carry out those ambiguous tasks that the Freedom Corps is unwilling to perform. Firm believers in the notion that the ends justify the means, Wyvern agents walk the line between hero and mercenary.

However, Wyvern is no typical mercenary force simply in it for the money. It draws its ranks from around the globe, searching for those whose lives have been shattered at the hands of evil. While most certainly heroic in their goals, Wyvern’s recruits fight with dark motives, driven by a desire to annihilate that which has destroyed them. With unlimited funds and a willingness to bend the law to suit their ultimate goals, it remains unclear the extent to which Wyvern would go to bring down the villains of Arachnos.

Manticore keeps his role in the activities of Wyvern well hidden from Statesman and the Freedom Corps, knowing that many of them would never sanction Wyvern’s “eye for an eye” approach to justice. While firmly on the side of good, Manticore’s own past has given him a different perspective on the nature of evil. After watching Protean murder his parents in cold blood, Manticore became convinced that there are times when evil must be confronted in a way they can understand, with cold, calculating force. Although other members of the Freedom Corps might agree to some extent, Statesman is adamant that true heroes never use deadly force, no matter the situation. And thus, Manticore’s beliefs put him at odds with many of the core values promoted by Statesman.

Organized as a paramilitary force, agents of Wyvern work their way up the ranks, gaining better weaponry and being assigned to more prestigious missions as they advance. Wyvern soldiers begin their training as Talon agents where they receive extensive training in close combat knife fighting as well as basic archery skills. Talon agents who prove themselves are promoted to Fang rank, gaining access to Wyvern’s special Fang Poison that slows the reflexes of anyone injected with it. By the time an agent has advanced to become a Sting Agent, they have achieved Wyvern’s complete trust and begin to specialize in armor piercing arrows . The veteran Wing Agents are eventually granted jet packs allowing them to rain damage from the skies with their deadly arrow attacks. Finally, the most elite arm of Wyvern are the Raptor Agents, trained masters of Archery, deadly accurate with their array of specialty arrows.

All Wyvern agents focus on two things, extraditing criminals back to Paragon City and targeting villains early in their career so that they are taken down before they get too powerful. With these goals their only directive, it is no surprise that Wyvern agents often resort to illegal and perhaps questionable actions to fulfill their one true desire – the ultimate destruction of evil.
