World War II was a major conflict conducted mainly in Europe and Asia and parts of northern Africa from 1939 to 1945.

The war was started in 1938 due to the Nemesis statue passing over Earth. It caused Adolf Hitler to annex the country of Austria. (DW: Silver Nemesis)

The immortal Jack Harkness served in the war as an RAF pilot (DW: Utopia); Fey Truscott-Sade served as a British spy and special operative in occupied Europe (DWM: Me and My Shadow); and Toshiko Sato's grand-parents and Rachel Jensen worked as code-breakers at Bletchley Park, alongside Alan Turing. (TW: Greeks Bearing Gifts) (MA: Who Killed Kennedy)

The Doctor ensured Hitler would fail to prevent the British evacuation of Dunkirk, thus ensuring Britain would remain in the war. (NA: Timewyrm: Exodus)

In 1940 and 1941 Germany bombed Great Britain, an event known as the Blitz. The Royal Air Force carried out its own systematic bombings of Germany. (Established History)

From 1940 to 1945, the Channel Islands were occupied by German forces. (NA: Just War)

For a short period of time on both sides, the Cardiff rift linked 1941 and 2008, allowing Jack Harkness and Toshiko Sato of Torchwood 3 to meet with the original Captain Jack Harkness, and to cause suspicions in the denomination of the institute about Bilis Manger. (TW: Captain Jack Harkness)

In 1943, Fenric was working with his Haemovores at Maiden's Point. Russia and Britain, while nominally allies, were plotting against each other in preparation for post-war conflicts . (DW: The Curse of Fenric)

In 1944, The Doctor and Ace arrived at Colditz. (BFA: Colditz)

In 1945, an amnesiac Doctor, Alan Turing and Graham Greene got involved in an unexplained alien conflict, as well as surviving through the Dresden firebombing. (EDA: The Turing Test)

World War II was a global conflict on planet Earth, begun when the nation-state of Germany, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, invaded Poland in 1939. The Allied nations, including Great Britain declared war on the Axis Powers, including Germany, Italy and Japan. The United States of America joined the war in 1941, when Japanese forces bombed the U.S. naval station at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The war ended in an Allied victory in 1945, following the detonation of atomic weapons over two Japanese cities.

Benny Russell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. (DS9 novel: Unity)

Following the German occupation of France, an underground resistance group was formed, calling themselves "Maquis". A 24th century group resisting Cardassian power in the Demilitarized Zone adopted the name "Maquis" from this group.

Alternate Timelines

The interference of Doctor Leonard McCoy following his journey through the Guardian of Forever to the year 1930 led to the delay of the United States' entry into the war until 1944. In this timeline, the war continued into 1955. (TOS episode: "The City on the Edge of Forever"; novel: Crucible: McCoy: Provenance of Shadows)

As a part of the Temporal Cold War, the Na'kuhl aided the German war effort, enabling them to occupy the American northeast in 1944. This timeline was negated by the efforts of Captain Jonathan Archer. (ENT episodes: "Storm Front, Parts I and II")

The Second World War also occurred in the Mirror Universe, with Japan as one as its participants. One of the results appears to have been a lessening of the power of Japan's emperor, as the Kyoto Imperial Palace was turned into a tourist attraction. (ENT novel: Age of the Empress)

World War II (abbreviated WWII), or the Second World War, was a worldwide conflict which lasted from 1939 to 1945. Caused by the expansionist and hegemonic ambitions of Germany, Italy, and Japan and economic tensions between all major powers, World War II was a confluence of two conflicts respectively started in China (the Second Sino-Japanese War), and in Poland (the Invasion of Poland). This global conflict split a majority of the world's nations into two opposing camps: the Allies and the Axis. Spanning much of the globe, World War II resulted in the deaths of over 60 million people, making it the deadliest conflict in human history.

1940 - The Spear of Destiny

In November of 1940, German Chancellor Adolph Hitler acquired a powerful mystic weapon known as the Spear of Destiny. With it, he intended on manipulating its power to dominate all of Europe. A British officer named Smythe learned of Hitler's plans and informed American president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt, pressured by Congress to maintain an isolationist stance, refused to openly involve the United States in England's war with Germany. Instead, he formed the Justice Society of America.

1941 - Pearl Harbor

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 5, 1941, US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gathered all available Mystery Men and asked them to unite for battling sabotage and similar at the home front during World War II. Their activities were limited to the home front so they could not fall under the influence of Adolph Hitler's Spear of Destiny.

The Squadron soon included also the members of the Justice Society of America (during war time also called the Justice Battalion), the Freedom Fighters and the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Later there was a sub group of younger heroes, dubbed the Young All-Stars, who also were part of the All-Star Squadron.

1945 - The Death of Hitler

The Unknown Solder

Official records state that Reich Chancellor Adolph Hitler and his new bride Eva Braun committed suicide in a hidden bunker in Berlin in April of 1945. This is erroneous however and the true incidents that took place on that day are known to but a few. During the Battle of Berlin, the Unknown Soldier was sent on a mission to stop a Nazi super-weapon - vampiric octopuses called "Nosferatu". On April 29, 1945, he infiltrated Hitler's bunker, killing him and assuming the dictator's identity in order to call off the weapon's deployment. He then made Hitler's death look like a suicide. [1]

With the death of Adolph Hitler, Berlin soon fell to Russian forces. Several U.S. units, including Easy Company, were still active during this time. On May 1st, 1945, only one day after Hitler's death, the time-displaced essence of Alec Holland, the Swamp Thing, took root in the body of a possible ancestor, Alexander Holland. Holland had been killed by enemy fire in Germany, but the Swamp Thing was able to reanimate his body and communicate with the soldiers of Easy Company. Together, they raided a slaughterhouse which was actually a front for one of Hitler's magus bunkers. The abattoir was run by the Transylvanian Nazi Anton Arcane. Arcane used this facility as a staging ground for his experiments in cellular reanimation and it was here that the very first Un-Men were conceived. A U.S. air strike decimated the facility and Arcane was believed killed when he was gored by a steer. Arcane survived however and would return years later to plague the Swamp Thing. [2]

Parallel Dimensions

Tales told under the Vertigo banner do not all take place within the same reality. Many of them even take place on New Earth. In one possible reality, a British detachment of soldiers known as the Rifle Brigade embarked upon a strange mission called "Operation: Bollock". Mission parameters for this venture involved finding the lost testicle of Adolph Hitler. [3] Whether the adventures of this Rifle Brigade takes place within New Earth continuity or its own separate continuity is unknown.

On Earth-X, World War II was a prolonged conflict that extended for decades. American President Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed away from a heart attack in 1944, leaving the country in such a state, that Nazi Germany was able to develop atomic weaponry. By this point, both countries were reluctant to use such destructive capabilities against the other for fear of retaliation that the conflict continued using conventional warfare. Adolph Hitler's Nazi war machine soon reached American shores and dominated the country. Members of the famed Blackhawk Squadron nobly gave their lives fighting the Axis powers. [4] American soldiers tried to fight back, but by this point Hitler's scientists had developed mind control technology that weakened the opposition's willpower. By the early 1970s, the flag of the Third Reich flew across the entire nation. Some proved to be immune to the effects of the mind control devices, and small resistance pockets began to form in various cities.

The history of World War II as it occurred in the WildStorm Universe is similar to how it took place in other realities. The grim member of the Authority known as the Midnighter once traveled back in time on a mission to assassinate Hitler when he was but a young officer. He failed in this endeavor, but left a distinct impression on the Austrian by kicking him savagely in the groin.

Wonder Woman

World War II was a major plot device in season one of the Wonder Woman live action television series. Operating from a "secret Nazi base" in Berlin, officers in the Third Reich conducted their affairs in an effort to undermine America's war effort. They established a vast network of spies and saboteurs who infiltrated America's military apparatus, targeting weapons factories, military bases and government offices. To combat the Nazi threat, the War Department established the Air Corps Intelligence Division under the command of General Philip Blankenship. Blankenship's top man was former Air Force major Steven Leonard Trevor. In the Spring of 1942, the Amazon princess Diana came to the United States on behalf of the people of Paradise Island and adopted the guise of Wonder Woman. She also adopted the mortal alias Diana Prince and joined the Air Corps Intelligence Division holding the rank of Yeoman 1st Class. As Wonder Woman, Diana fought many Nazi agents and was even held prisoner in a Nazi stronghold in Germany. She fought against scheming aristocrats such as the Baroness Paula von Gunther as well as athletic power houses like Fausta - the Nazi Wonder Woman. After the war Wonder Woman returned to Paradise Island where she remained for more than thirty years.

Terra Obscura

In the Earth-ABC universe's parallel planet Earth, Terra Obscura, Hitler was killed by Captain Future (Andrew Bryant).

World War II, or abbreviated as WWII, was an international human conflict that occurred on Earth between 1939 and 1945.

World War II was the second global military conflict in Human History. The war started when Adolf Hitler, Führer of Nazi Germany, invaded Poland. Britain and France were sworn to protect this country, and so war broke out. At this time, World War II wasn't a World War, it was just a war in Europe. But Hitler had invaded many of the bordering countries beforehand such as Austria, Czechoslovakia and Luxembourg.

Hitler and his 3rd Reich had efficiently recreated a new German "Reich" (Empire). Soon, the Soviet Union, which had sided with Hitler before the war, had tried to invade Finland. This war, quickly became another World War. Soon, other nations began helping the Nazi War effort, including the Empire of Japan, and Italy. But also, other countries started to join the Allied War effort as well, with the Soviet Union and the United States entering the war in 1941.

These countries may have been the entire reason the war was won by the Allies. But still, the Allies won by the skin of their teeth, for if it wasn't for the overwhelming amount of soldiers with them, Germany and Italy would control Europe, Africa and the Americas while Japan would control Asia and Oceania. With the help of the two atomic bombs being dropped on Japan, nicknamed "Little Boy" and "Fat Man", the world was launched into the Atomic/Nuclear Age. Over 72,000,000 people died on both sides in the six year conflict, many being civilians from the Soviet Union, the Republic of China and the Axis Powers.

The United Nations

Main article: United Nations

As a result of the Allied victory (the United States of America, Great Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and others) over the Axis Nations (Nazi Germany, Italy, Japan and others), the United Nations Charter was signed on June 26, 1945, marking the replacement of the defunct League of Nations and the creation of the United Nations. The United Nations were formed with a goal of international peacekeeping by means of collective security.

Types of ammunition still in use in the Human-Covenant War

  • .30 caliber (confetti maker)
  • .50 caliber (M41 LAAG)
  • 7.62mm Ammunition. (MA5B AR, MA5C AR, M808B Scorpion MBT Coaxial machine gun)
  • 90mm gun (M808B Scorpion)

  • The paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day and during Operation Market Garden inspired the UNSC's ODSTs, although the concept had to be rethought for Zero-G.
  • It may be possible that the Brute Spike Grenade was inspired by a German hand grenade known as the "the Potato Masher" or more specifically the "Stielhandgranate".

Pre-War: Early 1940's

  • In the early 1940's, before the United States entered World War II, the Red Skull was particularly involved with subversive activities in the United States. The United States government created the costumed persona of Captain America so that there would be a costumed counterpart to the Red Skull. It was in the United States, before America officially entered World War II, that the Red Skull had his first conflicts with Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, the man who became his principal and perennial nemesis.
  • Captain America, his sidekick Bucky, the original android Human Torch, the Torch's sidekick Toro, and Namor the Sub-Mariner acted together to oppose the forces of Nazism. When these superheroes saved the life of Prime Minister Winston Churchill from Master Man, the thankful Churchill suggested that they should become a team, known as the Invaders.

  • During the final days of the war, on or before April 18, 1945 [1] Captain America was trying to stop a bomb-loaded drone-plane launched by Nazi technician Baron Heinrich Zemo when the plane exploded, apparently killing his partner Bucky; and throwing Cap unhurt into icy Arctic waters. The Super-Soldier Formula prevented crystallization of Captain America's bodily fluids, allowing him to enter a state of suspended animation. He was later found and revived by the Avengers.
  • On April 30, 1945 The Human Torch killed Hitler in self defense, in Hitler's bunker. Hitler's consciousness would survive in the form of the Hate-Monger.
  • Magneto is incarcerated in the Auschwitz concentration camp. He meets his wife Magda there and escapes with her during its evacuation.
  • Wolverine fights as a commando/special agent for the Canadian Army. He may have also been a spy for the Allied Forces and it was recently revealed that he may have spent time in the Sobibor concentration camp.

World War II, also known as the Second World War or WWII for short, was an Earth-wide conflict, lasting between 1939 and 1945 and resulting in the death of some estimated 60 million people, making it the deadliest conflict humanity had seen in its history to that point. Until World War III, World War II was the most widespread war Earth had ever seen, with over 100 million soldiers from 61 nations participating in battles over 20 million square kilometers of the planet's surface.

Nations participated in one of two sides: the Allies (including the United States of America, Great Britain, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, amongst many others) or the Axis (including Nazi Germany, Italy and Japan). The Axis started the conflict through ambitions for more territory and lost the conflict in 1945 through various battles and strategies, including Japan being the victim of the first use of a nuclear weapon in a war on Earth.

Many atrocities occurred during this war, including the Holocaust.

German chancellor Adolf Hitler stated in 1938, "We need breathing room", in response to criticism on his attacks on neighboring countries. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 halted the United States of America's neutrality in the conflict, leading to their full entry into the war a day later. (TNG: "The Enemy"; DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

At the war's end, American general Douglas MacArthur said: "Today the guns are silent. A great tragedy has ended. We have known the bitterness of defeat and the exultation of triumph, and from both we have learned there can be no turning back. We must go forward to preserve in peace what we've won in war." Admiral William Ross repeated these words at the end of the Dominion War in 2375. (DS9: "What You Leave Behind")

The United States of America and Union of Soviet Socialist Republics emerged as the dominant powers throughout the majority of the 20th century, keeping each other and other nations in check to avoid another active war; this was called the Cold War. (DS9: "Little Green Men", "Our Man Bashir")

Good did come to the planet in the war's aftermath: the formation of the United Nations helped provide a forum for nations to resolve disputes instead of resorting to war.

According to Enterprise-D captain Jean-Luc Picard, in the role of Dixon Hill, the dominant USA also culturally influenced the second half of the 20th century. The war also spurred invention and technological advancements, including in fission and rocketry. (TNG: "Manhunt")

Fan continuities

Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions

Members of Scott Fack's family fought on both sides of the conflict, and some of his relatives were victims of the Nazis, including his great-grandmother. A recording of his paternal grandparents' recollections of the horrors of Nazi Germany continued to haunt him throughout his life, even shaping the Starfleet officer he would become. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part Two")

Alternate timelines

Temporal Cold War

Captain Jonathan Archer and the Enterprise crew, thrown back in time from 2154, found an alternate reality where the Nazis were successful in pushing further, taking northeastern North America (including New York City), parts of Russia (including Moscow), Great Britain and northern Africa. Archer and the Enterprise crew found the Nazis being assisted by an alien race called the Na'kuhl and were successful in defeating them, destroying their leader Vosk's time machine, restoring history to the right path. (ENT: "Storm Front", "Storm Front, Part II")

Guardian of Forever

A delusional Dr. Leonard McCoy, from the future via the Guardian of Forever, saved Depression-era pacifist Edith Keeler from being killed by a truck in 1930, creating an alternate timeline whereby Keeler later met with then-US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and convinced him to not enter the war. Without the USA's help, the Allies quickly fell to the Axis, with Germany completing the first atomic bomb and dominating the world. In the alternate history, the Federation never formed. Stranded in the future on the Guardian's planet, USS Enterprise Captain James T. Kirk and first officer Spock travelled back to 1930 to stop McCoy from saving Keeler. They were successful, returning history to its correct path. (TOS: "City on the Edge of Forever")
