Dr Who

Up to date as of January 31, 2010

From TARDIS Index File, the free Doctor Who reference.

The wolf is a small mammal in the order Carnivora native to Earth. Humans domesticated wolves into dogs relatively recently.

Wolves (or wolf-like creatures) were also found on Marinus. (DW: The Keys of Marinus)

Wolves have played a significant part in Human culture. In Norse mythology, Fenric was described as a monstrous wolf which would, during the final battle between gods and beasts, destroy the world at the end of time. The people Fenric manipulated into freeing himself were known as the Wolves of Fenric. (DW: The Curse of Fenric) Other evil wolves included the Big Bad Wolf. (DW: The Unquiet Dead)

One of the prisoners of the Glass Prison was a woman known as the Wolf. (BFBS: The Glass Prison)

The Killorans seemed to be descended from wolves or wolf-like creatures. (BFBS: The Doomsday Manuscript)

The wolf (Canis Iupis) is a carnivorous canine related to the dog, and native to the planet Earth.

According to old Earth legends, children who had became lost in the wilderness and survived were typically raised by a pack of wolves. In 2266, Spock had claimed to study the old legends and responded to Leonard McCoy's reference to children surviving in the wilderness would "require a wolf to look after the infant". (TOS novelization: Charlie X)

From The Vault

Wolf
location: West Coast

Wolves almost always travel in packs. Though they are less numerous than the horrible mongrels in Dogtown, wolves are much more individually dangerous and persistent. Wolves have sharp teeth and will frequently knock a target over, then attack the head.

Physical Atributes

Unlike other Wasteland creatures wolves seem to have been barely (if at all) affected by radiation which makes them one of the few "unmutated" animals still living in the wastes.

The term Wolf refers to an entire genus, Canis, the separate species that are encompassed by it. Dogs are a subspecies of the wolf genus, evolving from the Gray Wolf approximately 100,000 years ago.

Contents

Types

  • Gray Wolf, commonly referred to simply as the Wolf, which has numerous subspecies including:
  • Arctic Wolf
  • Eastern Timber Wolf
  • Eurasian Wolf
  • Japanese Wolf, extinct
  • Hokkaido Wolf
  • Honshū Wolf
  • Mexican Wolf
  • Italian Wolf
  • Tundra Wolf
  • Red Wolf, rare species in Eastern USA (Canis Rufus)
  • Dire Wolf, extinct prehistoric species
  • Prairie wolf or coyote
  • Eastern Canadian Wolf, a recently recognized species.
  • Ethiopian Wolf, resembling a fox.
  • Indian Wolf, a recently recognized species.
  • Maned Wolf, exclusive to South America.

Status

Many of the surviving species are severely endangered in their native habitats due to pressure upon their prey from human hunting, or human encroachment on their territory. Historically, wolves have held a place in human mythology as demonic creatures.

Wolves were apparently one species transplanted from Earth to Reach[1]. It's not known exactly why wolves would have been transferred to a colony world, but it may have been part of a wider off-world conservation effort, but they were more than likely killed on Reach, and perhaps even Earth.

Trivia

  • John-117 and the other Spartans studied wolf pack behavior as part of their learning.
