"Though physically weak, the White Mage can choose from a broad array of healing and defensive magic spells."
—'Dawn of Souls' Instructions

The White Mage is the peaceful healer of the Warriors of Light. He or she uses his/her knowledge of White Magic to ease the suffering of his or her wounded companions. Although in most cases White Mages fight with staves, and this is one of the the few cases in which they can fight with hammers, with Thor's Hammer being the the strongest weapon, (other than the Masamune), that this class' upgrade can equip.

Name Origins

In the Dawn of Souls version, there are 10 optional Auto-Names for each of the different character classes. Each name is a reference to another character or place name in the Final Fantasy series. The 10 names for the White Mage class are:

Gender

People have never been sure as to whether the White Mage is a male or female character in this game. Some believe that you can define genders and personalities for your own characters regardless of class. Others believe all of the light warriors are male. Yet another viewpoint is that the original White Mage was male, while the remake's White Mage is female. The general consensus is that the White Mage is a female, due to the fact that White Mages, with many significant exceptions, tend to be female in the series. Another argument is that the auto-names in the Dawn of Souls version imply that the character is intended to be female. A decisive counterargument is that not all of the auto-names of the White Mage are female; Noah and Sherko are debatebly male names. Also, it should be noted the Thief and the Red Mage follow a similar naming pattern, as two of the ten names offered are female names. The Black Mage also has four female names to choose from, giving the argument that possibly as many as four of Warriors of Light were female. Adding to this, in the White Mage's cameo appearance within the Final Fantasy team in Mario Hoops 3-on-3, the White Mage character is a female.
