―Uthar Wynn — (audio)Listen (file info)

Uthar Wynn was a humanoid male Sith Master and the Headmaster of the Sith Academy on the Sith necropolis Korriban during the Jedi Civil War. Wynn was apprenticed to the Academy's former Headmaster Jorak Uln. Wynn eventually drove Uln out of the Academy, although Wynn failed to kill Uln. Wynn then became the Academy's Headmaster, taking the Twi'lek female Yuthura Ban as his apprentice. In the Jedi Civil War's final year, the Jedi Padawan traveled to Korriban in search of the Star Forge, an ancient Rakatan space station under the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Malak's control. Revan gained the approval for entrance into the Academy from Uln's apprentice Ban, and the Headmaster assigned Ban as Revan's teacher.

During his stay on Korriban, Revan completed various tasks given to him by Wynn while managing to avoid the corruption of the dark side. Revan also befriended Yuthura Ban, gaining her trust and conspiring with her to kill Wynn. After Revan gained enough prestige, Wynn and Ban took Revan to the ancient Sith Lord Naga Sadow's tomb. Wynn tasked Revan with reaching the Rakatan Star Map in the tomb, which Revan was searching for, and retrieving a lightsaber. After Revan found the Star Map and acquired the lightsaber, Wynn ordered Revan to kill Ban, but Revan sided with the Twi'lek. Wynn went on the attack but was killed by both his Sith apprentice and the redeemed Jedi.

Early life

"I strived many years to hone my power until I was able to drive out my predecessor and rule the academy."
―Uthar Wynn — (audio)Listen (file info)
Wynn's Sith Master and former Headmaster of the Korriban Sith academy, Jorak Uln

Uthar Wynn, a humanoid male, studied at the Sith Academy on the Sith homeworld on Korriban under its Headmaster Jorak Uln, who had served under the Dark Lord of the Sith Exar Kun's Sith Empire during the Great Sith War.[1] Wynn eventually drove his Sith Master out into the Valley of the Dark Lords, where Uln would remain, studying inside the tomb of the ancient Sith Lord Tulak Hord. Wynn then assumed control over the Academy and took a Twi'lek female Jedi Padawan named Yuthura Ban as his Sith apprentice. Wynn devoted his attention to running the academy itself and put Ban in charge of selecting the strongest hopefuls for training.[2]

Jedi Civil War

"We are as the Force is meant to be. The Jedi would hide that from you… they would tell you the dark side is too quick, too easy, all so that they need never challenge the passions that lie within them."
―Uthar Wynn — (audio)Listen (file info)

At some point during the Jedi Civil War—which was initiated by the Sith Lords Darth Revan and Darth MalakDustil Onasi, the son of the Republic commander Carth Onasi, was convinced by a human female named Selene to go to the Sith Academy on Korriban. Because of his disdain for his father, Onasi became a promising student. During his training, Onasi developed a relationship with Selene who, compared to Onasi, was not as powerful of a student. This distressed Wynn, who felt that such an emotional entanglement would hinder Onasi's progress. The Sith Master secretly had Selene murdered. Wynn then lied to Onasi about her death, saying Selene had died on a mission in the Valley of the Dark Lords.[4]

Wynn's Sith apprentice, Yuthura Ban

Near the end of the of Jedi Civil War, Wynn's apprentice Ban began plotting to take control of the Academy. Wynn soon noticed Ban's ambitions and planned to have her removed. In 3,956 BBY, the final year of the war,[1] the former Dark Lord of the Sith Revan, now a retrained Jedi, came to Korriban in his search for a fifth Star Map that lead to the Star Forge, an ancient Rakatan space station which was under the control of Revan's former apprentice and reigning Dark Lord Darth Malak. Revan managed to gain entry into the Academy and was brought before Wynn, along with the students Lashowe, Mekel, Shaardan, and Kel Algwinn. The Headmaster then assigned Ban as Revan's teacher, while Revan attempted to prove himself worthy of what Wynn considered a full Sith. While at the Academy, Revan assisted Carth Onasi in convincing his son Dustil that the Sith were evil. Revan broke into Wynn's room in the Academy and stole his personal datapad, which contained his order to kill Selene. This caused Dustil to abandon the Sith ways and leave the Academy.[2]

Endgame

"So the time has come, has it? I… I will… ugh… no! My… strength leaves me!!"
"You are weak, Uthar, and the Force has abandoned you. We have made sure of it!"
―Uthar Wynn and Yuthura Ban — (audio)Listen (file info)

While Revan was earning prestige in order to gain access to the Star Map, Revan gained Ban's trust and friendship, conspiring with Ban to eliminate Wynn. Revan eventually gained more prestige over his fellow students, although he maintained the tenets of the Jedi Code and avoided the dark side's corruption. Wynn ordered Revan to locate and execute the Sith apprentice Thalia May and her fellow renegade students, however, Revan helped May and the renegades escape Korriban. Revan then lied to Wynn about their fate, and gained prestige with Wynn. Wynn also ordered the destruction of a rogue assassin droid that was hidden in the ancient Sith Lord Marka Ragnos' tomb. Revan also helped the droid escape Korriban, and lied to Wynn about the droid's destruction. Revan encountered Wynn's former Sith Master, Jorak Uln, in the Sith Lord Tulak Hord's tomb. After he was tortured by Uln, Revan killed the former Headmaster and presented Wynn with Uln's Sith tablet.[2]

Revan managed to impress Wynn enough that the Sith Master deemed him ready to become a full Sith. Wynn and Ban took Revan to the tomb of the ancient Dark Lord Naga Sadow. Wynn instructed Revan to find the Star Map and bring back a Sith lightsaber. After Revan successfully completed his task, Wynn was prepared to deal with his renegade apprentice by ordering Revan to kill Ban. However, Revan chose to ally with Ban. Enraged, Wynn attacked Ban and Revan, but they slew the Headmaster.[2] After Wynn's death, Ban turned on Revan, but the Jedi managed to defeat her.[3] Revan then convinced Ban to return to the Jedi Order, and Ban forsook the dark side, abandoning the Academy. After Revan returned to the Academy, the Sith instructors, troops, and apprentices attacked Revan and his companions when Wynn did not return with him. Revan and his companions managed to defeat all the Sith in the Academy and in the Valley of the Dark Lords.[2]

Legacy

"More recently, this tomb was where Revan confronted Uthar Wynn, the leader of the Sith Academy. When Revan left Korriban, the Sith Academy was thrown into turmoil—with their leader gone, many fought for the right to rule. And so the Sith here turned on each other, resulting in the carnage you can see covering the surface of this valley."
―Kreia, to the Jedi Exile — (audio)Listen (file info)
Headmaster Uthar Wynn.

After Malak's death at Revan's hands,[1] the remaining Sith on Korriban fought over the right to rule the Sith. The Sith then turned on one another.[5] Five years after the end of the Jedi Civil War,[1] the human female Jedi Knight known as the Jedi Exile traveled with the Sith Lord Darth Traya, whom the Exile knew as Jedi Master Kreia, to Korriban in search of Jedi Master and former Council member Lonna Vash. After disembarking the freighter Ebon Hawk, which Revan owned during the final year of the Jedi Civil War, Traya telepathically guided the Exile through the Valley of the Dark Lords. When the Exile approached Naga Sadow's tomb, Traya informed the Exile that after Revan defeated Uthar Wynn in the tomb and left Korriban, the Academy's Sith fought each other, resulting in the skeletal remains littered throughout the Valley and the Academy lying in ruins.[5]

Personality and traits

"We, however, do not treat the Force as a burden. We treat it as a gift, a thing to be celebrated. We use it to acquire power over others… and why should we not? Because the Jedi say we should not?"
―Uthar Wynn — (audio)Listen (file info)

Uthar Wynn was a bald humanoid male whose head was adorned with tattoos. His eyes were yellow due to his immersion in the dark side. Wynn possessed certain traits that were typical of the Sith, such as an intolerance of failure, and believed that those who could not defeat their opponents deserved their fate. Wynn was not afraid to have some of his students killed if it would allow another student to progress further without delay. He admired acts of betrayal and deception, but not when he was on the receiving end. Wynn, like his former Master Jorak Uln, possessed a double-bladed lightsaber containing a red crystal, which he used in combat. He also possessed a Sith mask, a set of Jedi Master robes, a Cinnagar war suit, and a personal datapad. Rather than wear a set of robes, Wynn wore a Sith officer's uniform.[2]

Wynn was reluctant to talk about his past, and possessed a calm demeanor. However, when betrayed by his enemies, Wynn would bring out his rage. Although it was rumored that mentioning Wynn's former Master, Jorak Uln, in the Sith Master's presence was not a good idea, Wynn in fact no longer cared about his old Master's fate. Wynn was gullible, believing Revan when he lied to Wynn about defeating Thalia May and the renegade students the Headmaster had ordered killed, despite the fact that Revan allowed the renegade students to escape. Wynn also did not sense deception from Revan when the Jedi lied to Wynn about destroying the rogue assassin droid.[2]

Powers and abilities

Being a Sith Master, Wynn was adept at the use of the dark side, using powers that enabled him to choke his enemies. He was also able to use the dark side to drain his enemies' life-forces, replenishing his own vitality. Wynn was capable of using the Force to render himself invunerable to most offensive Force powers for a limited period of time. Having possessed a double-bladed lightsaber, Wynn was skilled in its use.[2]

Behind the scenes

Uthar Wynn was created as a villain for the 2003 Xbox and PC video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, developed by BioWare. Wynn was voiced by veteran voice actor Tom Kane.[2] Wynn received an entry in The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia.[3]

There are many alternate choices for Revan to make in Knights of the Old Republic regarding Uthar Wynn's fate. Revan could side with Ban and kill Wynn. Once completed, Ban would turn on Revan. However, he managed to defeat Ban. She would plead for mercy and Revan would spare her life, allowing her to leave unharmed; Ban would take up mastery of the Academy. Another choice involves Revan not allying with anyone; after passing the final test, Revan would say that he would not cooperate with anyone, being no Sith. Both Wynn and Ban attacked him, and were killed. A third option has Revan siding with Wynn and attacking Ban. Revan then allowed Wynn to live and go back to lead the Academy. A fourth outcome involves Revan not siding with Wynn, attacking and killing him with Ban's help. Ban then attacked Revan, when Revan defeats Ban, she pleads for mercy. Revan apologizes to Ban and kills her. A fifth choice has Revan choosing not to side with either Wynn or Ban, claiming he was the only true Sith of the three, and killing both.[6]

Revan can also kill Ban for Wynn and then tell the truth about why he sought the Star Map, saying he never intended to become a Sith. Wynn instantly becomes enraged and attacks Revan, stating that he would "tear the flesh from his bones." Wynn would also attack if Revan did not tell him that Ban was plotting to kill him. If Korriban is the final world that a dark-sided Revan visits, then after Revan fights Wynn and kills Ban, Revan can tell Wynn that he is Darth Revan. Wynn recognizes Revan, secretly devotes his allegiance to him, and vows to pledge the Academy to Revan should he successfully destroy Malak.[6]
