So here's where our favorite characters find themselves...

The super-hero Civil War saw Tony Stark placed at the head of SHIELD, and in charge of America's superhuman population. The Skrull invasion saw him branded as a failure, and a coward. That same event saw another man, Norman Osborn, captured in a seemingly heroic moment, elevated to Stark's position. Seemingly reformed, Osborn began reshaping the nation to suit his whims: SHIELD, seen as a failure, was replaced by HAMMER, filled with the dregs of the SHIELD ranks and other less-than-reputable organizations. Most of the government-backed Avengers left, not wanting to work for the known villain, only to be replaced by new heroes wearing old mantles, actually known murderers in disguise.

A secret Cabal was also formed, led by Osborn and including several like-minded would-be world conquerors. Camp Hammond, set up to train the next generation of heroes was devastated by the legacy of Stark and condemned, and Camp HAMMER was established to take its place, run by seemingly-reformed villain Taskmaster and, secretly, super-villain gangster the Hood, who populated its ranks with several of his own agents. Conflict soon arose, with many long-time heroes forced into hiding or locked away. The mutant populace saw itself come under attack, forcing them to flee the country and establish their own nation-state, a final Utopia for the dwindling population. But as Osborn's Dark Reign continues, his ranks have begun to falter. And in January...a Siege might be his downfall.

From the mind of Brian Michael Bendis, the next Marvel saga begins this January and is a story so big it will continue through the first half of 2010!

The Comics Story

Marvel Comics began life as "Timely Publications" in 1939, with comic books featuring Captain America, Namor the Sub-Mariner and an early version of the Human Torch. Legendary comics writer Stan Lee was hired as an office assistant in 1939. Within two years, the 19-year-old Lee was promoted to editor of the Marvel Comics line, a post that he would keep until 1972.

Everything changed in 1961, when Lee and artist Jack Kirby created The Fantastic Four -- a new style of superhero comic that focused on the characters' internal drama as well as their heroic adventures. The style was a huge success, and the Lee/Kirby team went on to create the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Mighty Thor and the X-Men. The prolific Lee worked with artist Steve Ditko to create Marvel's greatest success story, Spider-Man. Stan Lee's Marvel revolution extended beyond the characters and storylines to the way in which comic books engaged the readership and built a sense of community between fans and creators.

Today, Marvel's heroes are blockbuster stars on the silver screen, with Spider-Man, Iron Man, the X-Men and the Hulk becoming regular features of the summer movie season.

Runescape

Up to date as of February 07, 2010

From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape

A player stands at a "corner" of the world, looking out into the Unknown.

The Unknown is supposedly all of the dark areas in Gielinor where players can neither travel to nor see. These areas are not connected to the World Map and enclose the areas on the map. For example, there is no map area south of the Kharidian Desert and the vast endlessness of these areas are displayed as checkered blue and white squares on the World map.

Contents

Future updates

The map of Gielinor.

Some of the "Unknown" is typically revealed when new parts of the map are revealed during updates. Writing will occasionally appear on it if something is to be created in the area in the near future. It is more or less the end of the RuneScape visible area, until something is constructed there. As of 1 July 2008, the "Unknown" is displayed as checkered blue and white squares on the World map, but has still remained colourless in game.

On one version of the RuneScape world map, the "Unknown" is covered in clouds that hide the black areas around Gielinor.

Future Areas

There are many areas in the game that are currently hidden but still have been talked about by NPC's. Here is a list of locations that have been mentioned:

Area Possible Location Other Information
The Penguin Motherland Above the Iceberg or The North. It might be released along with then next Penguin Quest. It may be linked to Acheron.
Kudos Island Somewhere north of Morytania. Only can be accessed when players have got enough Kudos for the Varrock Museum.
A New Large Continent Above Morytania. It could be linked to Kudos Island.
Acheron Found North of the Fremennik Province Includes many polar animals such as Polar Bears and Mammoths, may be linked to the Penguin Motherland.
Underwater City Somewhere in the sea of Gielinor Guthix mentioned this in one of the God Letters. Might be linked to the sea slugs home
More Fremennik Islands North-West of Rellekka Many NPC's have mentioned other islands near Rellekka
Eastern Lands East of Port Phasmatys A few NPC's have mentioned a continent east from Port Phasmatys and Dragontooth Island.
Arposandra Near or underneath the Poison Waste. Plays a huge part in The Eyes of Glouphrie quest but not seen yet.
Darkmeyer East of Castle Drakan Mentioned in a Leather Book but is possible that the little village is Darkmeyer or there is more of Darkmeyer.
Cursed Archipelago South of Mos Le'Harmless Mentioned in The Great Brain Robbery quest.

Prifddinas, Darkmeyer, and Menaphos are also three areas in the game that can not be accessed but are still visible on the world map. Still, a bit of each has been cut off stopping the player from seeing whats at the other side.

Evolution

With the release of RuneScape High Detail, the unknown now comes in more colours than just black, depending upon one's location in Gielinor. This has created a couple of interesting cases where the unknown is known to peek through local scenery such as the trapdoor leading from the Grand Tree ground floor down to the mines, this in an unintended feature of the game and can be considered as a small graphical glitch. Some parts of the ground in the wild and other hilled locations in RuneScape can also appear transparent when viewed from the correct angle, showing what is on the other side of the hill.

Postbag from the Hedge

A player standing near the unknown surrounding Tutorial Island. On the minimap, the unknown is shown as pure black.

On Issue 32 of the Postbag from the Hedge, Trader Stan revealed that parts of the "Unknown" are really just water.

There are many theories about the black spaces surrounding the lands of RuneScape; you may even have heard Evil Dave’s rather unusual conspiracy theories on the matter. As a paying customer, you do need not to worry yourself with the technicalities of your voyage. I provide you with a high-quality service for a very reasonable price (considering my skills and experience), and this includes negotiating areas that some people claim do not exist. I will, however, tell you a little-known secret about crossing these spaces.

For many generations, sea-faring piratical folk have protected their business interests by encouraging the widespread use of maps that show mysterious black areas surrounding the lands of RuneScape. These maps have fostered the belief that these areas are dangerous and can only be navigated by professionals with a mastery of the seas; professionals that charge, I think you'll find, a very realistic fee. The truth is, the black spaces are neither dangerous nor empty, and anyone could travel through them if they had enough nautical knowledge and a sturdy ship (and a more accurate map, of course!).

I wish you safe travels and I hope to welcome you onto one of my vessels again soon, although what is this ring of Charos that you mentioned? Is it valuable? I feel like I have given you information that should not be public knowledge, but I’m sure I wouldn’t do that; I’m a professional after all.

God letters

On Issue 24 of the God letters, Guthix revealed that there exists an underwater city beneath the oceans of Gielinor.

If thou art asking of the city beneath the waves, it hath been submerged for many centuries, and most commonfolk consider it naught but a myth.

I tell thee true, however, that such a place doth indeed exist, and even as I write this there are those working to re-establish access between this place and the outside world that hath all but forgotten it over these past centuries.

(Redirected to Unknown Regions article)

From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

This article is about Unknown Regions of the galaxy. You may be looking for RPG supplement.
"I left for the Unknown Regions, determined to lose myself. I learned that unknown was not the same as empty."
Darth Krayt to Cade Skywalker

The Unknown Regions, Unknown Space, Unknown Sector, or Unknown Territories was the collective term for all regions of the galaxy not formally charted; it differed from Wild Space in that Wild Space was usually minimally charted, but not fully explored.

The Unknown Regions could be broadly defined as areas not connected with the skein of reliable or well-known hyperspace routes spanning the galaxy, did not look to Coruscant as the ultimate center of civilization, or were not under the broad hegemony of the Galactic Republic before the Galactic Civil War—but the full reasons behind this lack of contact remain unknown. At the region’s outer edge, was the Hyperspace disturbance at the edge of the galaxy, in locations such as the Crispin system that gazed out at the Intergalactic Void.

History

"There are a hundred different threats out there that would freeze your blood if you knew about them."
Stent to Mara Jade
Killiks moved from Alderaan to the Unknown Regions.

The reach of civilization extended at least nominally to the edge of the Galactic disk—for instance, the territory of the Corporate Sector extended to the end of the Tingel Arm. The galactic disk and some satellite galaxies were mapped well enough that the omission of thirty-seven systems (including Kamino) from stellar charts were obvious gravitational anomalies, even when scanning from afar.

The large galactic volume designated as the "Unknown Regions" included uncharted areas in dense nebulae, globular clusters, and the galactic halo. 15% of the galaxy's volume was contained within the Unknown Regions.[1] Many governments repeatedly sent scouts into the Unknown Regions. General Wedge Antilles once remarked that "If you continue to map the Unknown Regions, you'll have to call them something else."[2]

The Unknown Regions approached nearest to the galactic disk behind Bakura, Bilbringi, and the Imperial Remnant. Important powers in this area of space included the Chiss Ascendancy, the Ssi-ruuvi Imperium, the Vagaari, the Killik Colony, and the Empire of the Hand, but it was also home to species such as the Croke, the Ebruchi, the Nagai, the Tofs, and the Eickarie.

One hypothesis by a noted scientist suggested that a mass of dark matter intersected the galaxy in this region, creating gravitational anomalies that hindered navigation. However, the lack of any tidal disruption of the galaxy's spiral form (as shown in Jedi Archives) may disprove this supposed dark mass. It is clear, moreover, that much of the Unknown Regions were passable to determined travelers—for instance, Corellian traders had been in contact with the Chiss for many years before their "discovery".[3]

Chiss Grand Admiral Thrawn, a native of these parts, was dispatched aboard the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Admonitor to the Unknown Regions during the years of the Galactic Civil War, ostensibly on a simple mapping expedition, but in reality to explore and subjugate entire sectors for the Galactic Empire. While there, Thrawn seems to have encountered the Yuuzhan Vong [though the Yuuzhan Vong were from another galaxy]. He also created a shadow Empire, the Empire of the Hand.

Sectors

Due to the very fact that the region was "unknown," it presumably had not been charted and divided into sectors.

Behind the scenes

The depiction of the Unknown Regions varies from source to source. Some fans would like to limit the term to areas outside the plane of the galactic disk, and this hypothesis is not contradicted by any canon or EU evidence. It is supported by movie canon, which describes a Galactic Empire, and in which the entire galaxy can be surveyed for any lost planet, fugitive, or Rebel base.

In Vision of the Future, the space known to the Old Republic, Empire, and New Republic is not specifically assigned to any section of the galactic disk, nor are the Unknown Regions. They do appear adjacent on the map, which includes the disk. The territory under the hegemony of the Empire of the Hand, while by no means comprising all of the Unknown Region, seemingly embraces as much as 240 sectors, roughly a quarter of the volume of known space. Although huge, this volume is emptier than the Galactic disk, since the combined total of the Unknown Regions contains no more than one percent of the galaxy's stars.[5]

In contrast, The Essential Chronology and New Jedi Order series, as well as the associated galactic map, have bulked the Unknown Regions on one side of the Galactic disk, and this seems now to be a geometric projection of sub-volumes above the disk. However, it should be noted that most fans subscribe to a two-dimensional interpretation, in which the Regions actually touch much of the disk. Worlds such as Kamino, lying "beyond the Outer Rim" on the opposite side of the galaxy, in a dwarf satellite galaxy 70,000 light years from the galactic center, might also be considered as lying on the edge of this zone.

At the end of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, the Jedi Exile goes out to the Unknown Regions of the galaxy to search for Revan who at the time is searching for the mysterious True Sith.
