The United States Armed Forces were the overall unified military forces of the United States before the Great War, composed of the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and United States Air Force. The President served as the Commander-in-chief of the military, with the Secretary of War, Department of War acting as the principal organ by which military policy was carried out.

After the Great War, the Enclave military forces are their direct descendant. The Brotherhood of Steel, on the other hand, was started by former US soldiers that rebelled against their unethical orders.

Before the War

The Anchorage US Army detachment, commanded by General Constantine Chase

By 2077, the US Armed Forces were the world's most powerful military force. The only rival was the People's Liberation Army of China, with which the Armed Forces clashed during the Sino-American War, in Anchorage and beyond.

The Army was primarily using energy weapons (laser and plasma) in the field, although due to slow production rates, many troops, in particular on the Anchorage Front Line, were still using regular firearms (such as the R91 Assault Rifle). Regular infantrymen, regardless of specialization, wore polymer combat armor (Anchorage troops used special winterized versions), while suits of power armor were reserved for Mechanized Cavalry units and special detachments (e.g. Colonel Spindel's group at Mariposa).

In a supportive role, the Army deployed robots - Sentry Bots and combat versions of the popular Mr Handy - Mr Gutsies. Aerial support was to be provided by next generation helicopters, the VB-02 Vertibirds, though they were scheduled to enter service in 2083, prototypes did see combat at Anchorage.

Fighter support was common and many patrolled the US coastline.

Notable operations

  • By far the most notable operation is the Anchorage Reclamation, an 11 year camapign to liberate Alaska from the Chinese invaders. Ultimately successful, it was the first large scale deployment of newly developed T-51b Power Armor units.
  • The annexation of Canada was also performed by the United States military, whose units were also dedicated to keeping the peace... by any means necessary.
  • Veterans of the Anchorage campaign were also deployed against their fellow countrymen, to contain food riots.

After the War

With the nuclear holocaust of 2077 and the dissolution of the chain of command, the US Armed Forces effectively ceased to exist, becoming groups of isolated soldiers with no coordination. Two groups, the Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel are known to be direct descendant (or include descendants of) the original United States Armed Forces.

However, by 2277, the only reminder that there once was a proud army are military bases scattered across the United States, together with their vehicles and equipment.

Nuclear tests in South Pacific

The United States Army carried out nuclear tests in the South Pacific in the 1950s. One such test using the test hydrogen bomb nicknamed "Jughead" was to be carried out on the Island. When a U.S. Army team of 18 soldiers arrived on the Island, they built a tent camp on the Mesa and a firing tower for the bomb. The soldiers were unable to carry out their mission before being wiped out by the Others, and Jughead was left unexploded. ("Jughead") The U.S. Army took a photo of the Island in September 1954, which was later found in the Lamp Post. ("316")

Conflict with the Others

A photo of the Island taken for the U.S. Army, as found in the Lamp Post. ("316")

Richard Alpert and the Others first encountered the Army group, 18 men strong, constructing their campsite. Alpert offered them the opportunity to leave the Island peacefully. When they refused, he and his people were "forced" to kill them. It is likely that this conflict was waged over some period of time, as evidenced by the presence of claymore mines on the Island.

The Others later salvaged many of their supplies, including their tent camp, uniforms and weapons, taking them for their own. They continued to patrol the Island and expected the Army to send people to retrieve the bomb. ("Jughead")

The nametags on the salvaged uniforms included:

  • Ana Lucia found an old U.S. Army knife on one of the Others who invaded the Tailies camp in 2004. ("The Other 48 Days") Since the Others appear to have appropriated the Army's weapons after killing them, it is likely that this knife originally belonged to one of the soldiers who came to the Island in 1954. Ana said the knife was probably 20 years old, but if it belonged to this group, it would have been at least 50 years old.

From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki

The United States military, officially known as the United States Armed Forces, are charged with defending the people of the United States of America from all hostile military forces, be they foreign states, terrorists, or killer alien robots. It is structured into the following five branches of service:

They have a habit of getting involved in the Autobot/Decepticon war on Earth because... well really, most of it takes place on American soil. It's their job. Plus a lot of Transformers disguise themselves as US military vehicles, and that's just not right.

Generation One

The US Armed Forces contain several specialized units whose branch of service is speculative.

The only named unit whose branch of service is known is the Air Force Uberhogs squadron.

In the Marvel Comics continuity, Sparkplug Witwicky is a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT)

Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) is a subordinate unified command of US Central Command (USCENTCOM). It is responsible for planning special operations in peacetime and war.

SOCCENT operates a Forward Operations Base in Qatar, commanded by Colonel Sharp, United States Marine Corps.

Army Special Forces

The United States Army Special Forces is an elite special operations force of the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC).

Captain William Lennox leads an Army Special Forces unit stationed out of SOCCENT Forward Operations Base. This unit includes:

It should be noted that losing's really not an option for these guys.

After the defeat of Megatron in Mission City, a six-man Special Forces team under Captain Cartwright were sent to assist Ironhide in fighting Scorponok. His team were Warrant Officer Marcus Holt, Master Sergeant Carlos Jimenez, Weapons Sergeant Darius Gale, medic Sergeant First Class William Oates (the only to show awe about meeting "an honest-to-gosh alien"), and Operations Sergeant Jim Moon. United States Air Force

CV-22 Osprey

Someone's going to have a hard time explaining how they lost two of these babies.

The Sikorsky CV-22 Osprey is a tiltrotor aircraft that combines the vertical takeoff, hover, and vertical landing qualities of a helicopter with the long range, fuel efficiency and speed characteristics of a turboprop aircraft. Its mission is to conduct long-range infiltration, exfiltration and resupply missions for special operations forces.

Two Ospreys out of SOCCENT transported Captain Lennox's Ranger unit back to the base after a mission.

Note: At the time of filming, the two Ospreys featured in the movie are two of only three that the US Air Force had in its inventory.

The vehicle form of the Autobot Springer is a similar model known as CV-17 Osprey

A-10 Thunderbolt II

The A-10 Thunderbolt II is a twin-engine, ground-attack aircraft designed to provide close air support (CAS) to ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets. It is also called the Warthog about as often as its official name, in and out of the United States Air Force.

After receiving Captain Lennox's request for air support, the Pentagon ordered a nearby airbase to roll in Strike Package Bravo, two A-10 Thunderbolt IIs fitted with AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles, to give immediate support to Lennox's besieged unit. USAF Sergeant Epps coordinated with an E-3 Sentry AWACS to have the A-10s direct their fire upon the target in killbox one-alpha, which was indicated by flares and painted with laser guidance markers. Approaching the village, the two A-10s strafed the robotic scorpion with 30 mm rounds from their Avenger gatling guns. Causing no noticeable damage, the two planes followed up with their Maverick missiles, blowing up a lot of sand, but they missed. As a result, there was no appreciable effect on the mechanical beast.

E-3 Sentry AWACS

Yes, I have a mushroom on my back. I have issues with it, okay?

The E-3 Sentry is an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft that provides all-weather surveillance, command, control and communications to the United States military. It looks like a Boeing 707.

After Captain Lennox established communications with the Pentagon, Sergeant Epps coordinated with an E-3 Sentry to have fire directed upon Scorponok. The E-3's crew provided command and control to the pair of A-10 Thunderbolt IIs in Strike Package Bravo and the AC-130 Spectre gunship that attacked Scorponok.

  • Michael Adams (AWACS Controller #1)
  • Ron Henry (AWACS Controller #2)
  • Benjamin Hoffman (AWACS Controller #3)
  • Michael McNabb (AWACS Controller #4)
  • Jason White (AWACS Controller #5)

Note: Most of the crew of the E-3 Sentry seen in the movie are real crew of that particular aircraft. First Lieutenant Micheal McNabb (who played AWACS Controller #4) is a Transformers fan, and stated in an email to fansite that director Michael Bay allowed them to come up with lines that they would really say to other aircraft in order to make the scenes as realistic as possible. This is confirmed by the DVD commentary, with Bay giving the crew a basic outline of the scenario, and letting them come up with the rest.

AC-130 Spectre

Sure, you bring your alien insect technology, and I'll bring...

The AC-130 Spectre gunship, codenamed Spooky 32, is a heavily armed ground-attack airplane. It is used for close air support, air interdiction, and force protection. Close air support roles include supporting ground troops, escorting convoys, and flying urban operations. Strangely, this plane's guns are on its side and not in front of it.

With the lack of significant damage to Scorponok by the two A-10 Thunderbolts of Strike Package Bravo, Captain Lennox suggested the biggest barrels the Air Force has: the 105mm M102 howitzer cannons of an AC-130 Spectre gunship. The Spectre pounded the Decepticon attack into the ground with a combination of 40 mm L60 Bofors cannon and 105mm sabot rounds, damaging Scorponok enough for it to retreat.

F-22 Raptor

Up! *ting* Down! *boomp* Flying around ... looping the loop and defying the ground ... those Magnificent Men in their flyyyyyiiiing machiiiiinees!

The F-22 Raptor is an air-superiority fighter with stealth capabilities. It is one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world.

Two Raptors were launched to intercept and escort Blackout to SOCCENT. They were presumably destroyed when the Decepticon laid waste to the base.

Later, Secretary of Defense Keller successfully contacted the Air Force, and F-22 Raptors were launched to give air cover to the combined Ranger/Sector Seven/Autobot unit in Mission City. The second wave of Raptors took heavy damage when the Decepticon Starscream successfully infiltrated the group and destroyed four of the Raptors before being driven off. With the heat off their tails, the squadron participated in the destruction of Blackout and Megatron.

Real world

During filming of the Transformers live-action movie, director Michael Bay worked closely with the United States Department of Defense, who saw a high-profile summer action movie where US troops fight evil alien robots as a good promotional tool. It's not known if they are an official sponsor of the movie franchise like corporate partners General Motors, Kraft Foods Inc., PepsiCo, and Target. However, military personnel did get the opportunity to see the film free of charge before its American release.
