The United States Army, more popularly referred to simply as the Army or the US Army, was a branch of the military of the United States of America on Earth. The largest branch of the various armed services of the United States, the Army was responsible for land based military operations. The Army was formed on June 14, 1775 as the Continental Army, and would later play a major role in securing the independence of the United States. George Washington was the leader of the Army at this time.
In 1776, the Continental Army defeated British troops advancing into New York City at Harlem Heights. (DS9 novelization: Far Beyond the Stars)
During the Civil War era, the Army was known as the Union Army. Colonel Thaddius Riker - a distant ancestor of Captain William T. Riker - served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His life was saved when a member of the Q continuum who would come to be called Quinn carried him to safety following the Battle of Pine Mountain, Georgia. (VOY episode: "Death Wish")
As aircraft were developed in the early 20th century, the Army initially took responsibility for aerospace matters. The particular part of the Army responsible for aerospace operations was known as the Army Air Corps. In 1947 that part of the Army was taken to form a separate armed service, known as the United States Air Force. (DS9 episode: "Little Green Men")
When the Hirogen captured the USS Voyager, they forced the crew to participate in holodeck simulations in order to better understand the races of the United Federation of Planets - which they considered prey. During the simulation of Nazi occupied France, Chakotay assumed the role of an officer in the United States Army. (VOY episode: "The Killing Game")

The United States Armed Forces were the overall unified military forces of the United States before the Great War, composed of the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and United States Air Force. The President served as the Commander-in-chief of the military, with the Secretary of War, Department of War acting as the principal organ by which military policy was carried out.
After the Great War, the Enclave military forces are their direct descendant. The Brotherhood of Steel, on the other hand, was started by former US soldiers that rebelled against their unethical orders.

By 2077, the US Armed Forces were the world's most powerful military force. The only rival was the People's Liberation Army of China, with which the Armed Forces clashed during the Sino-American War, in Anchorage and beyond.
The Army was primarily using energy weapons (laser and plasma) in the field, although due to slow production rates, many troops, in particular on the Anchorage Front Line, were still using regular firearms (such as the R91 Assault Rifle). Regular infantrymen, regardless of specialization, wore polymer combat armor (Anchorage troops used special winterized versions), while suits of power armor were reserved for Mechanized Cavalry units and special detachments (e.g. Colonel Spindel's group at Mariposa).
In a supportive role, the Army deployed robots - Sentry Bots and combat versions of the popular Mr Handy - Mr Gutsies. Aerial support was to be provided by next generation helicopters, the VB-02 Vertibirds, though they were scheduled to enter service in 2083, prototypes did see combat at Anchorage.
Fighter support was common and many patrolled the US coastline.
With the nuclear holocaust of 2077 and the dissolution of the chain of command, the US Armed Forces effectively ceased to exist, becoming groups of isolated soldiers with no coordination. Two groups, the Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel are known to be direct descendant (or include descendants of) the original United States Armed Forces.
However, by 2277, the only reminder that there once was a proud army are military bases scattered across the United States, together with their vehicles and equipment.

The military in GTA games are the armed forces of the USA, comprising mostly of the Army, but also with air and naval bases. The army themselves don't appear in Grand Theft Auto IV, because it enhances realism - the army would not be sent to kill one person, and also because the army do not generally operate within large cities. The army is replaced somewhat by NOOSE. The military is also important in many missions throughout the series, such as Sir, Yes Sir!, Black Project, Green Goo, Up, Up and Away!, Vertical Bird and Over the Top.

In Grand Theft Auto II, the military will chase trh ===Grand Theft Auto III era===After the player gains six stars in a GTA III Era game, the army will begin to chase the player. On the ground, two military vehicles are used to kill the player; the Barracks OL, which is used for troop transport, and the Rhino tank. The soldiers themselves are always well armed with weapons that will often make short work of the player and most vehicles.
Members of the military behave as a gang in Vice City and will attack the player if spotted on military territory, unless in a Cop uniform. They will also set up roadblocks comprised of the Barracks OL with soldiers armed with M16's in GTA III, M4's (in Fort Baxter Air Base) and MP5's (during a 6-star wanted level), and M4 Carbines in every other GTA III Era game. These aren't as lethal as those of the FBI since there could be two FBI vehicles taking up one road with at least eight agents. But seeing as how the Barracks takes up the space of one road they can be broken through although the MP5s still pose a threat, especially since the Army is very well trained, more than the FBI.
A strange thing is that soldiers in the Fort Baxter Air Base never participate in law enforcement activity; if the player is wearing a police uniform or army fatigues and enters the base with a wanted level; only the law enforcement officers that enter from outside will try killing the player.

The United States Army carried out nuclear tests in the South Pacific in the 1950s. One such test using the test hydrogen bomb nicknamed "Jughead" was to be carried out on the Island. When a U.S. Army team of 18 soldiers arrived on the Island, they built a tent camp on the Mesa and a firing tower for the bomb. The soldiers were unable to carry out their mission before being wiped out by the Others, and Jughead was left unexploded. ("Jughead") The U.S. Army took a photo of the Island in September 1954, which was later found in the Lamp Post. ("316")

Richard Alpert and the Others first encountered the Army group, 18 men strong, constructing their campsite. Alpert offered them the opportunity to leave the Island peacefully. When they refused, he and his people were "forced" to kill them. It is likely that this conflict was waged over some period of time, as evidenced by the presence of claymore mines on the Island.
The Others later salvaged many of their supplies, including their tent camp, uniforms and weapons, taking them for their own. They continued to patrol the Island and expected the Army to send people to retrieve the bomb. ("Jughead")
