The Ultima Weapon, also known as Atma Weapon, is a boss in the game Final Fantasy VI. It was created 1000 years before the events of the game during the War of the Magi. It was bred for mass destruction, and is created out of pure energy. Easily the most powerful boss in the World of Balance and effectively the final boss for that section of the game, it can rapidly destroy the party with a variety of powerful magical attacks.

Strategy

The Ultima Weapon attacks in three "stages." The first stage has it using its physical attacks and casting Flare and Blaze at the party, which can be deadly, so it is recommended to be on guard to recover from the damage. Once Ultima Weapon reaches 12,800 HP, it goes into its second stage, which has an attack pattern. It starts out by casting Quake, Bio, or Meteor, which can be deadly if the party is not prepared. Its next move is either a physical attack or its special, Full Power, which deals heavy damage to one target. Next, it always casts Fira on the entire party. Its next move is an attack called Mind Blast, which chooses four random targets (meaning the same party member may get targeted twice) and inflicts a random status ailment on each. This can be pretty deadly. It then wastes two turns glowing (and taunting the player with the message "Vast energy focused"), as it charges up for its ultimate attack: Flare Star. Flare Star deals unblockable, Defense-ignoring, Fire-elemental damage to all party members, and that damage is equal to 80 times a random party member's level divided by the number of party members. In other words, it gets stronger as characters level up. The pattern then restarts by casting either Quake, Meteor, or Bio. Once Ultima Weapon drops below 6,144 HP, it enters its third phase, in which it uses its physical, Quake, Tornado, Graviga, Rasp, and Blaze. It also has a 1/3 chance of countering any attack with Flare.

It is recommended to equip Gaia Gears, which allows Quake to heal the party. However Edgar and Cyan cannot equip Gaia Gear, so the player should leave them behind on the Blackjack. Locke can steal a rare Ribbon, so consider bringing him to the battle. and Shadow should Throw any weapons available. Mage-type characters like Terra, Celes, etc, should cast their strongest spells. Mog should Dance the Earth Blues, as it has strong attacks and can heal the party with Sun Bath. Since the Ultima Weapon only uses its more dangerous attacks in the later stages of the battle, the player may wish to take a few turns to cast buff spells like Haste and summon Espers to strengthen the party while Ultima Weapon is still using its weaker spells.

Another useful strategy is to use Rasp and Osmose to drain all of Ultima Weapon's MP, as he will die when he runs out. Although this can take a long time, attacking his MP leaves his HP at its maximum value, and thus the party does not need to worry about the more dangerous attacks he uses when his HP is low.
