The United States Army, more popularly referred to simply as the Army or the US Army, was a branch of the military of the United States of America on Earth. The largest branch of the various armed services of the United States, the Army was responsible for land based military operations. The Army was formed on June 14, 1775 as the Continental Army, and would later play a major role in securing the independence of the United States. George Washington was the leader of the Army at this time.

In 1776, the Continental Army defeated British troops advancing into New York City at Harlem Heights. (DS9 novelization: Far Beyond the Stars)

During the Civil War era, the Army was known as the Union Army. Colonel Thaddius Riker - a distant ancestor of Captain William T. Riker - served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His life was saved when a member of the Q continuum who would come to be called Quinn carried him to safety following the Battle of Pine Mountain, Georgia. (VOY episode: "Death Wish")

As aircraft were developed in the early 20th century, the Army initially took responsibility for aerospace matters. The particular part of the Army responsible for aerospace operations was known as the Army Air Corps. In 1947 that part of the Army was taken to form a separate armed service, known as the United States Air Force. (DS9 episode: "Little Green Men")

When the Hirogen captured the USS Voyager, they forced the crew to participate in holodeck simulations in order to better understand the races of the United Federation of Planets - which they considered prey. During the simulation of Nazi occupied France, Chakotay assumed the role of an officer in the United States Army. (VOY episode: "The Killing Game")

The United States Armed Forces were the overall unified military forces of the United States before the Great War, composed of the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and United States Air Force. The President served as the Commander-in-chief of the military, with the Secretary of War, Department of War acting as the principal organ by which military policy was carried out.

After the Great War, the Enclave military forces are their direct descendant. The Brotherhood of Steel, on the other hand, was started by former US soldiers that rebelled against their unethical orders.

Before the War

The Anchorage US Army detachment, commanded by General Constantine Chase

By 2077, the US Armed Forces were the world's most powerful military force. The only rival was the People's Liberation Army of China, with which the Armed Forces clashed during the Sino-American War, in Anchorage and beyond.

The Army was primarily using energy weapons (laser and plasma) in the field, although due to slow production rates, many troops, in particular on the Anchorage Front Line, were still using regular firearms (such as the R91 Assault Rifle). Regular infantrymen, regardless of specialization, wore polymer combat armor (Anchorage troops used special winterized versions), while suits of power armor were reserved for Mechanized Cavalry units and special detachments (e.g. Colonel Spindel's group at Mariposa).

In a supportive role, the Army deployed robots - Sentry Bots and combat versions of the popular Mr Handy - Mr Gutsies. Aerial support was to be provided by next generation helicopters, the VB-02 Vertibirds, though they were scheduled to enter service in 2083, prototypes did see combat at Anchorage.

Fighter support was common and many patrolled the US coastline.

Notable operations

  • By far the most notable operation is the Anchorage Reclamation, an 11 year camapign to liberate Alaska from the Chinese invaders. Ultimately successful, it was the first large scale deployment of newly developed T-51b Power Armor units.
  • The annexation of Canada was also performed by the United States military, whose units were also dedicated to keeping the peace... by any means necessary.
  • Veterans of the Anchorage campaign were also deployed against their fellow countrymen, to contain food riots.

After the War

With the nuclear holocaust of 2077 and the dissolution of the chain of command, the US Armed Forces effectively ceased to exist, becoming groups of isolated soldiers with no coordination. Two groups, the Enclave and the Brotherhood of Steel are known to be direct descendant (or include descendants of) the original United States Armed Forces.

However, by 2277, the only reminder that there once was a proud army are military bases scattered across the United States, together with their vehicles and equipment.

Nuclear tests in South Pacific

The United States Army carried out nuclear tests in the South Pacific in the 1950s. One such test using the test hydrogen bomb nicknamed "Jughead" was to be carried out on the Island. When a U.S. Army team of 18 soldiers arrived on the Island, they built a tent camp on the Mesa and a firing tower for the bomb. The soldiers were unable to carry out their mission before being wiped out by the Others, and Jughead was left unexploded. ("Jughead") The U.S. Army took a photo of the Island in September 1954, which was later found in the Lamp Post. ("316")

Conflict with the Others

A photo of the Island taken for the U.S. Army, as found in the Lamp Post. ("316")

Richard Alpert and the Others first encountered the Army group, 18 men strong, constructing their campsite. Alpert offered them the opportunity to leave the Island peacefully. When they refused, he and his people were "forced" to kill them. It is likely that this conflict was waged over some period of time, as evidenced by the presence of claymore mines on the Island.

The Others later salvaged many of their supplies, including their tent camp, uniforms and weapons, taking them for their own. They continued to patrol the Island and expected the Army to send people to retrieve the bomb. ("Jughead")

The nametags on the salvaged uniforms included:

  • Ana Lucia found an old U.S. Army knife on one of the Others who invaded the Tailies camp in 2004. ("The Other 48 Days") Since the Others appear to have appropriated the Army's weapons after killing them, it is likely that this knife originally belonged to one of the soldiers who came to the Island in 1954. Ana said the knife was probably 20 years old, but if it belonged to this group, it would have been at least 50 years old.

The United States armed forces were the military services of the United States of America, on Earth. The commander in chief of the US armed forces was the President of the United States.

US Navy

The US Navy was the seagoing service of the United States. The Navy also became responsible for aviation duties conducted from aircraft carriers.

Upon hearing the name "USS Enterprise", John Christopher mistook the ship for being a Navy vessel, before James Kirk corrected him, stating that UESPA was a "combined service." (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday")

In 1986, the aircraft carrier Enterprise was docked at the Alameda Naval Base in San Francisco. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

US Marine Corps

The USMC was a branch of military service, a military corps reporting to the US Department of the Navy (contrary to popular belief, it did not fall under the authority of the uniformed branch of the Navy). The Marines were used as naval infantry, specializing in fighting on ships and conducting amphibious assaults, and coordinated air/land/sea assaults.

In 2364, the Q-entity took the form of a 1980s Marine captain to lecture Jean-Luc Picard on the barbarity of Human history. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

Q's rank insignia were visible on his jacket, which appeared to be modern to the time the episode was filmed, in 1987.

US Army

The US Army was deployed on several fronts when the Allies invaded Nazi-occupied France during World War II. (VOY: "The Killing Game", "The Killing Game, Part II")

The US Army Air Corps was an aviation division of the US Army in the early 20th century. As atmospheric flight became more advanced, this became a separate service, the US Air Force. (DS9: "Little Green Men")

Union Army

The Union Army was the army of the United States of America during the American Civil War.

The Union Army utilized observation balloons that were tendered at around six hundred feet high. (TOS: "The Savage Curtain")

US Air Force

The US Air Force was a branch of the United States armed forces responsible for deploying aircraft, satellites and missiles for purposes of defense, assualt, and surveillance. The Air Force consisted chiefly of aircraft, their aircrews, and personnel to maintain and support them. The Air Force did not comprise the bulk of the US's combat aviators however, since the innovation of the aircraft carrier left much of that country's tactical aviation in the hands of the US Navy. Strategic deterrant was most visibly the province of the Air Force, which maintained a bomber fleet in the air around the clock during nearly the entire Cold War, and intercontinental ballistic missiles (one of which would eventually be converted to a launcher for the prototype warpship Phoenix).

In 2267, an accident catapulted the USS Enterprise back three centuries to 1969. Its appearance in that year, in the airspace over a military base, caused alarm. An Air Force pilot, Captain John Christopher attempted to intercept the Enterprise. In one version of history, his plane was destroyed and he was taken aboard the ship; in the version "recreated" by Spock's slingshot method of returning to the future, the ship vanished before he could reach it, and he returned to his base, unaware of what he had seen. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday")

In an illustration he did for the Incredible Tales magazine, Roy Ritterhouse drew a space station that was operated by the US Air Force. The illustration later became part of the Deep Space 9 novella. (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars")

US Air Force Air Police

The USAF Air Police was the branch of the USAF responsible for defending airbases and facilities at the time when Captain John Christopher was taken aboard the Enterprise. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday")

Background information

Another branch of the armed forces was the United States Coast Guard, who were credited for assisting in the making of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. However, they were never mentioned on Star Trek.
