USS Rutledge (NCC-57295) was a New Orleans-class frigate, on active duty in Starfleet during the 24th century. For many years, her commanding officer was Captain Benjamin Maxwell.

Under Maxwell's command in the 2340s, Rutledge participated in the Federation-Cardassian War.

Miles O'Brien, Timothy Sinclair, Will Kayden, Raymond Boone and Christopher Durham served aboard Rutledge in 2362. O'Brien rescued 13 Starfleet officers from Cardassians on Setlik III during this year, while his crewmates Kayden, Boone and Durham all died in the same battle. Maxwell promoted O'Brien to Rutledge's tactical officer position as a result of his heroism. (Star Trek: Pendragon "Ceremonies of Innocence"; TNG: "The Wounded"; DS9: "Paradise", "Tribunal")

Alternate dating schemes place the Setlik III incident in 2347, or claim there were two such incidents.

During the Second Federation-Klingon War in 2373, the Starfleet counterattack into the Archanis sector against the Klingons was led by Rutledge alongside USS Tecumseh. (DS9: "Nor the Battle to the Strong")

Fan continuities

Star Trek: Hidden Frontier

In late 2375, the Rutledge was assigned to the Federation Alliance fleet that was assigned to take the Lapolis System from Dominion forces. During the battle, the Rutledge, the USS Devonshire and the USS Tian An Men were ordered to pursue a Cardassian Galor-class warship and a Jem'Hadar dreadnought which had broke away from the main fleet.

While the Devonshire and the Tian An Men pursued the dreadnought, the Rutledge followed the Galor-class ship into the McAllister Nebula. The Cardassians soon signaled their surrender, but both ships soon found themselves under attack by a Grey vessel which destroyed the Galor and launched a psionic attack on the Rutledge and captured all of its crew except Betazoid Lieutenant Myra Elbrey.

Shortly after, the Rutledge was discovered by the Devonshire and an away team were able to rescue Elbrey just as the Grey launched a psionic attack on the Devonshire. With Elbrey's help they were able to stop the attack on the Devonshire, but the Rutledge was destroyed by the Grey vessel. (Star Trek: Hidden Frontier: "Enemy Unknown, Part One")

Starfleet International

The New Orleans-class Rutledge would be replaced by a Defiant-class escort. William Herrmann would serve as commanding officer on both Rutledge's in the 2370s.

This continuity also asserted that Rutledge had been named after Edward Rutledge of South Carolina, the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence.
