The USS Melbourne (NCC-62043) was an Excelsior-class explorer in service during the 24th century.

In 2364, the Melbourne was docked at Starbase 74 at the same time as the USS Enterprise-D, undergoing repairs. When the Enterprise was subsequently stolen by the Bynars repairs on the Melbourne was rushed as it was the only vessel that could travel fast enough to catch the Enterprise. (TNG episode: "11001001")

By the mid 2360s a Nebula-class replacement was under construction to replace the Melbourne, and the new Melbourne was ready by 2367. Both the old and new Melbourne were sent to the Wolf 359 system to face the Borg, and both ships were subsequently lost in the course of the battle. (TNG episodes: "The Best of Both Worlds, Parts I & II", DS9 episode: "Emissary")

The USS Melbourne (NCC-62043) was an Excelsior-class Starfleet starship in service during the mid-24th century.

In 2364, the Melbourne, along with two other starships and the USS Enterprise-D, were docked at Starbase 74. Due to her repair status, the Melbourne was unable to pursue the hijacked Enterprise-D. Starbase 74's commanding officer, Orfil Quinteros, attempted to rush the repair schedule to get the ship ready to pursue, but the situation remedied itself before the Melbourne was finished. (TNG: "11001001")

By late 2366, the Melbourne had been drydocked at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in preparation for her decommissioning. However, before the decommissioning was performed, Starfleet Command ordered all available starships to rendezvous at Wolf 359 in order to intercept a Borg cube that was on a direct course for Earth. Because most of the Melbourne's former crew had been reassigned, Admiral Scott Mackenzie had to assume command of the Melbourne and leave for Wolf 359 manned with a crew of engineers and security and tactical officers hastily reassigned from Utopia Planitia. (Star Trek: Daedalus: "Clan Mackenzie")

The Melbourne stood with 40 other Starfleet and Klingon ships against the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359 in late 2366. Borg cutting beams destroyed the attacking ship's saucer section. (TNG: "Best of Both Worlds, Part II"; DS9: "Emissary"; VOY: "Unity"; Star Trek: Daedalus: "Clan Mackenzie") The USS Saratoga reported on radio chatter during the battle that the Melbourne was "down" after her saucer section had been destroyed. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")

One of the Melbourne's crew was Lieutenant Gregory Bergan. (VOY: "Infinite Regress") Two other Melbourne officers were Corey Aster's parents Lee and Amy Aster, both of whom were assimilated by the Borg before the Melbourne's saucer section was destroyed. (Star Trek: Hidden Frontier; Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Dream a Little Dream of Me")
