The USS Lakota (NCC-42768) was an Excelsior-class explorer in service during the 24th century.

In 2372, the Lakota docked at Deep Space 9 in order to transport Captain Benjamin Sisko and Constable Odo to Earth to confer with Starfleet Command over security concerns regarding the Dominion. While the Lakota was orbiting Earth she received a brief refit and placed under the command of Erika Benteen. A few days later, when Earth's power-grid failed and Earth feared a Dominion invasion, the Lakota's transporters were used to place Starfleet troops on Earth. (DS9 episode: "Homefront")

When the grid failure was revealed to be part of a plot by Admiral James Leyton to declare martial law on Earth, Leyton ordered the Lakota to intercept the USS Defiant to stop it reaching Earth with vital evidence against Leyton. After a brief battle, the Lakota stood down and escorted the Defiant to Earth. Following the incident, Captain Benteen was removed from command and demoted. (DS9 episode: "Paradise Lost")

In 2373, the Lakota travelled to a Maquis asteroid in the Terikof Belt to transport the remaining Maquis members to new planets. (DS9 novel: The Badlands, Part IV)

Later during the war the ship was destroyed. When the Enterprise-E's chief engineer, Geordi La Forge, was looking to replace a cracked injector his friend Whis, chief engineer of the USS Nautilus, suggested contacting Ranzz from the Bartlet, as the secondary hull and at least one nacelle were reported to have still been intact and the Bartlet had recently collected a lot of debris in the area where the Lakota had been destroyed. Ranzz promised to ask his captain to return to the wreck to pick up the remaining injectors and send one to La Forge. (TNG novel: A Time to Hate)

Nidani Ledrah had served on the Lakota prior to the USS Titan. (TTN novel: The Red King)

The USS Lakota (NCC-42768) was an Excelsior-class variant Federation starship in service during the 24th century.

Following the Antwerp Conference bombing in 2372, the Lakota transported Captain Benjamin Sisko, Odo and Jake Sisko from Deep Space 9 to Earth.

The Lakota went on to coordinate Starfleet Security forces planetside during Admiral James Leyton's attempted coup d'état, with Leyton declaring martial law. During this time, the Lakota's phasers were upgraded and the ship received a supply of quantum torpedoes. (DS9: "Homefont")

Under the command of new Captain Erika Benteen, the Lakota intercepted the USS Defiant in an attempt to quell Sisko's anti-coup attempt. The battle between the two ships was muted, as both ships were reluctant to do more than disable the other. As a result, Leyton revised his orders; the Lakota must destroy the Defiant. Benteen refused, standing the Lakota down and allowing Defiant to proceed to Earth. (DS9: "Paradise Lost")

In 2376, the Lakota was one of the ships to take part in the Battle of Sol and was commanded by Commander Benteen. During the battle the Lakota, USS Apex and USS Swiftfire-A were deployed to assist Jupiter Station after it came under attack. (Star Trek: Swiftfire: "United We Stand")

Star Trek: Pendragon

In the Pendragon timeline, the Lakota, under Benteen's command, supported Leyton throughout the Federation Civil War. (Star Trek: Pendragon: "True North", "Sword of Damocles")

In the aftermath of the war, the Lakota sat in an out-of-the-way drydock for several years, with Starfleet unwilling to assign a new crew to the ship. It wasn't until 2378 that the Lakota was recommissioned to participate in Project Restoration. Under the command of Captain Tiris Jast, the Lakota's involvement in reconstructing a new Deep Space 9 was seen as a symbol of the Federation's resolve to put the past behind them. Another part of that symbolism involved the assignment of Lt. Commander Tom Paris as Lakota's first officer. As an officer who had not lived through the civil war, Paris presented a unique perspective among the crew. (PDN: "Restoration")
