The USS Kongo (NCC-1710) was a Federation Constitution-class class I/class IX heavy cruiser starship in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century.

The Kongo was one of the initial batch of Constitution-class starships which were authorized by Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

The Kongo was eventually built to Mk II (Bonhomme Richard-subclass) specifications and entered service on reference stardate 1/9909. She was later refit to Mk III (Achernar-subclass) specifications on stardate 2/0406. (TOS reference: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

At some point during her service history the Kongo was commanded by Commodore Dan Stack. (RPG reference: Starships)

In 2267, the Kongo was docked at Starbase 11. (TOS episode: "Court Martial")

While the ship wasn't named, the Kongo's registry number was displayed on a chart in Commodore Stone's office.

In 2269, under the command of Commodore Dan Stack, the Kongo successfully observed the primitive civilization on Muldoon IV, located between the twin stars, Loki and Thor. (RPG reference: Starships)

In 2271, the Kongo was en route to Centaurus when Admiral Lori Ciana decided to come aboard and tour the human colonies there. (TOS novel: A Flag Full of Stars)

The Kongo was under the command of Captain J.C. Frederiksen in 2274. That year, the Kongo, joined by the USS Halk and the USS Rome, responded to a distress call from a Federation outpost in the Orion sector. Upon arrival, the Starfleet ships were engaged by six Klingon D18-class ships, commanded by Captain Kresz sutai-Kargon. (FASA RPG: Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update)

The timeline in the Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update claims the Kongo was destroyed when it engaged the Klingons. Unless another starship were assigned the name, or the wrecked Kongo had been refurbished, the ship wouldn't have been able to participate in the novel Shell Game or in Operation: Retrieve.

In 2275, the Kongo was 36 hours away from the USS Enterprise's position. The Kongo later met with the Enterprise at the Romulan Station Reltah. The Kongo was under the command of Captain Kosnett. (TOS novel: Shell Game)

The Kongo was later refit to Enterprise-subclass (Mk III) specifications on stardate 2/2102. (TOS reference: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

On stardate 8747.6 the Kongo suffered a containment field breach in her engineering hull that killed 100 of her crew and irradiated many others. Medical assessment predicted that 50 more would die from this radiation poisoning. A brace of tugs were sent from Space Station Sigma One, on the Andorian/Orion border, to recover her. Science Officer Robert "Bob" Cecil sacrificed his life attempting to limit the spread of the radiation. At that time, the original damage assessment was so severe that it wasn't known if the Kongo would ever be spaceworthy again.

Five days later, a memorial service for the Kongo crew was held at Space Station Sigma One; the death count established at 143. In attendance was Pavel Chekov, good friend of Science Officer Cecil. (TOS novel: Death Count)

2293 saw the Kongo on patrol along the Klingon Neutral Zone. The Kongo was considered by Starfleet to be part of Operation Retrieve later that year. (TOS movie: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

The USS Kongo (NCC-1710) was a Constitution-class heavy cruiser active in the 23rd century.

A Prime Team called the "Cavaliers" was assigned to Kongo. (Task Force Games: UFP: The Federation Sourcebook for Prime Directive)

Decipher RPG continuity

At one time, Kongo was commanded by Commodore Dan Stack. In 2269, she successfully observed the primitive civilization on Muldoon IV, located between the twin suns of Loki and Thor. (Decipher ST:RPG Starships)

Epiphany Trek continuity

The USS Kongo (NCC-1710) served from 2251 to 2307. She began her career as one of the queens of the fleet and ended as a Command School training ship. She has since been restored by her former captain, Jerold Ryan LaSaille, and stored at the Starbase 222 (El Nanth) spacedock, fleet dock A 137.

Name background

(Epiphany Trek) The USS Kongo was named for Mount Kongō (Japanese: 金剛山 "Kongô-zan"), a mountain not far south of the old capital of Japan at Nara. The word kongo was the Japanese pronuncation of the Chinese translation of vajra in Sanskrit.

The vajra was originally the thunderbolt of the god Indra. Later in esoteric, Tantric, or vajrayona Buddhism, the vajra symbolized supernatual powers that could be obtained through esoteric rituals. In the sexual symbolism of Tantrism, the vajra was also associated with the male organ. Kongo could also mean a jewel or diamond, or hard as a diamond. So appropriately Kongo as the name of a ship would imply the great power of a thunderbolt or the hardness of a diamond.

Starship Exeter continuity

The USS Kongo (NCC-1710) was an Achernar-class variant of the Constitution class under the command of Captain Kosnett.

While in the vicinity of Starbase 16, the Kongo reported that she was under attack. The starship USS Exeter was responding to assist. When Exeter arrived at planet Corinth IV, the location of the starbase, a landing party, led by Captain John Quincy Garrovick, discovered that the starbase had been completely obliterated. The wreckage of Kongo's saucer section was also discovered nearby on the surface of the planet. After a brief search, the badly damaged stardrive section was located, adrift in space. The ship was destroyed, presumably, by Tressaurian forces. There were no survivors. (Starship Exeter: "The Tressaurian Intersection")

Orion Press continuity

Prior to 2252, Kongo's commanding officer was Captain Terfel.

Captain Matterson commanded Kongo in 2284, with Commander Pavel Chekov as exec. During an encounter with a seemingly abandoned Romulan ship that year, the boarding party from Kongo was attacked by three survivors. Matterson was killed. (Orion Press: "Until We Meet Again")

Kongo was hulled during Starfleet's first encounter with the Kelvan invasion armada in 2285. The ship was repaired and rebuilt, and recommissioned two years later. (Orion Press: "It's Not Fair", "Return to Xantharus", "The Trainer", In Harm's Way)

Pocket Books continuity

Ca. 2273, Kongo clipped a cosmic string near Perseus, resulting in containment field breach. A total of 143 personnel died – including an old friend of Pavel Chekov's, Robert Cecil – and a whole section of the ship was lost. (TOS novel: Death Count)

Star Fleet Command (Grayslake, IL) continuity

On stardate 8502.04, during an engagement between Federation and Tholian forces in the Cobol Epsilon Tau system, Kongo immobilized a Tholian destroyer but was destroyed by a Tholian battleship. There were no survivors. (Research Anthology: "Cross Fire: The Tholian Slaughter")

The Starfleet Museum continuity

Kongo was restored to her original 2248 appearance and put on display at the Starfleet Museum.

The name Kongo was on Gene Roddenberry's list of possible Constitution-class ship names. It made the final cut as seen in The Making of Star Trek (page 165) which details the memos that added the Japanese battleship IJN Kongo as a source for one of the 12 ships of the original Constitution class. Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Technical Manual attached the registry "NCC-1710".
