During her service career, the Gandhi was a participant in the Coreworld Frontier Survey Initiative. On this initiative, this starship conducted first contact with the Zakdorn. (ST roleplay module: Starships)
While performing relief work with Bajoran refugees, the Gandhi's commanding officer was killed while attempting to negotiate an exchange of hostages with the Cardassians. By 2371, the Gandhi, under the command of Captain Azon Lexen, had completed its terraforming mission and was assigned to a patrol of the Demilitarized Zone. In this year, Lexen ordered Riker to deliver medical supplies via shuttlecraft to Outpost Sierra III. However, Riker and the supplies were captured by the Maquis to help combat a new outbreak of the Double Helix virus. Following the development of a cure, Riker decided to remain with the Maquis.
