The USS Excalibur (NCC-1664) was a Federation Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. The vessel took on the name of a previous vessel, Rollin Bannock's USS Excalibur, of several years earlier. Excalibur was commanded by Captain Harris in the 2260s, and was a participant in the M-5 wargames simulation of 2268. (ST roleplay module: Starships)

The Star Fleet Technical Manual gave the Excalibur a registry number of NCC-1705, however all other subsequent mentions have used the NCC-1664 registry used by FASA's RPG, originally devised by Greg Jein.

Service history

Prior to 2265, the Excalibur was the second Federation starship to encounter the N'shaii and their satellites in orbit of Velarrh VII. Thanks to data gathered during the USS Constitution's encounter with them in 2257, the Excalibur was well equipped to deal with the threat. Some time later, the Excalibur encountered the N'shaii for a second time, this time operating in orbit of Linyar II. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)

In 2266, the ship was assigned a seven-month patrol of the Romulan Neutral Zone. After this patrol, the Excalibur was allowed a two-week shore leave at Argelius II. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek")

In 2267, the Excalibur was one of the starships assigned to assist the USS Enterprise at the inauguration ceremonies on Altair VI. (TOS episode: "Amok Time")

While not actually mentioned by name in the episode, an earlier draft of the script that was later turned into a novelization by James Blish included this data.

A few months later, the Excalibur, under the command of Captain Anton Harris, along with the USS Lexington, responded to a distress call from the Enterprise after it became trapped in the black hole, TNC 65813, following a battle with Colonel Adrik Thorsen and his followers. The Excalibur and the Lexington towed the powerless Enterprise to the nearest Federation starbase on Neural III. (ST novel: Federation)

Also in 2267 the Excalibur was assigned to Sector 221-G and surveyed the planet Priatia. At this point, the commanding officer was Anton Harris. (NF novel: After the Fall)

In 2268 the Excalibur took part in the disastrous M-5 multitronic computer tests. The Excalibur, along with the Lexington, Hood, and Potemkin, participated in war games to test the computer's reflexes while it was installed aboard the Enterprise. The computer went insane, however, and fired full weapons on the Excalibur, reducing the ship to a powerless hulk and killing her entire 400-odd crew. (TOS episode: "The Ultimate Computer")

A second Constitution-class USS Excalibur II was commissioned, named in honor of this vessel's sacrifice.

USS Excalibur (NCC-1664) was a Constitution-class heavy cruiser active in Starfleet service during the 23rd century. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

The Star Fleet Technical Manual had the registry as NCC-1705.

(NOTE: The registry change from NCC-1664 to NCC-1705 was completed during the reconstruction of the ship, prior to relaunch, retiring the old number with the death of most of her crew. --See "Starship Saladin: Tour of Duty" -- Forthcoming)

As a junior officer, James T. Kirk had served on Excalibur with Mike Walsh, future commanding officer of the second Constitution-class USS Constellation. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

Excalibur's CO during the mid-2260s was Captain Harris.

Some sources list Captain Harris' first name as Thomas, others as Timothy and Anton.

Terise Haleakala-Lobrutto had been an officer in the Sciences division of Excalibur but apparently transferred off prior to the M-5 incident. (TOS novel: The Romulan Way)

In 2268, Excalibur was severely damaged during exercises with the USS Enterprise. The Enterprise, under the control of the malfunctioning M-5 computer, fired its phasers at full power easily penetrating the mininally power shields of the Excalibur, killing half of the crew. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

Captain Conrad was Excalibur's commanding officer from 2270-81. (Orion Press: "Scotty's Vacation")

During the Kelvan War in 2285, Excalibur, under Captain Croft, was assigned to Task Force Four and was one of the few survivors of the engagement against the Kelvans. Her personnel were rescued by ships from Task Force Six. (Orion Press: In Harm's Way)

Shortly after the Genesis incident, Excalibur was flagship of the Starfleet Third Fleet under Admiral Foy. On stardate 8418.08, Commander Zawitaj was promoted to acting captain and put in command of Excalibur, then dispatched to the Mutara sector and the Genesis system for survey. (Research Anthology: "Genesis Project System 7: Survey Scans and Reports")

Neysa el Man, future consort to a Klingon emperor, was an Alien Contact specialist assigned to Excalibur. (Masiform D 16: "Let It Be Remembered"; Beyond Diplomacy)

A Prime Team called the "Templars" was assigned to Excalibur. (Task Force Games: UFP: The Federation Sourcebook for Prime Directive)
