The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A), sometimes referred to as the Enterprise-A or NCC-1701-Alpha, was a Federation Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet during the late 23rd century. The second Starfleet ship to bear the name, Enterprise-A was christened shortly after the destruction of her predecessor, the USS Enterprise, in 2285. Captain James T. Kirk and his senior staff were reassigned to the Enterprise-A after they relinquished command of the captured HMS Bounty in San Francisco in 2286. Captain Kirk commanded Enterprise-A for seven years, and the ship's final cruise was highlighted by the protection the Khitomer conference as the Khitomer Accords were drafted. Construction history

When construction began on the Enterprise-A in the early 2280s, the ship was named the USS Ti-Ho and assigned the registry number, NCC-1798. The Ti-Ho was to serve as a test-bed for transwarp drive which was also being tested on the USS Excelsior.

Construction of the Ti-Ho was largely completed by 2285, but shortly afterwards transwarp drive was proved a failure and Starfleet Command decided to equip the Ti-Ho with conventional warp drive. (ST reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)

A few weeks later, the USS Enterprise was destroyed in orbit of the Genesis Planet, and in 2286, Admiral James T. Kirk and the former crew of the Enterprise prevented the destruction of Earth by the Cetacean Probe. In honor of their achievements, Federation President Hiram Roth ordered that the Ti-Ho be renamed Enterprise and assigned the registry NCC-1701-A. Shortly after, command of the Enterprise was assigned to newly-demoted Captain James T. Kirk. (TOS movie: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home)

In FASA materials such as the Star Trek IV Sourcebook Update, the ship redesignated as the Enterprise-A was a newly-built vessel that was to be named USS Atlantis. Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise lists the USS Yorktown as a possible candidate for re-christening to Enterprise. The TNG video game: Echoes From the Past also gives the ship's original name as the Yorktown; the same game also says the ship's commissioning was in 2285.

Mudd claims to have arrived on the planet and only wishes to seek a way off the planet, which the Enterprise-A can provide. As the landing party investigates the planet, they discover that it is actually a nursery, and Spock is able to free the Enterprise-A by melding with the artifact which controls the planet. NCC-1701-A was the second Federation starship named USS Enterprise, commissioned in 2286 under James Kirk's command to replace its destroyed predecessor. After several years of operation, the Enterprise-A was decommissioned in 2293 following the Khitomer Accords, and replaced six months later by the Excelsior-class Enterprise-B. Star Trek: New Voyages

Nearly 100 years after its retirement, the ship was commandeered by Admiral Kirk (who somehow survived the events on Veridian III) and Ambassador Spock to travel back to 2266, joining Fleet Captain Pike and Captain Kirk to retrieve the device now dubbed, the Doomsday Machine. Due to the efforts of the three ships in 2266, the Machine arrives back in the 24th century, where it is immediately rendered harmless. ("In Harm's Way)"

Harry Potter and the Return of James T. Kirk

In 2380, the Federation starship USS Titan, while on a scientific survey of the Gamma Quadrant, discovered the saucer section of the Enterprise-A, which somehow survived the events of Chal in 2293 and appeared on planet Gamma Germanicus VII. With the help of several students from an educational institution named Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Titan away team was able to fly the saucer off planet.

Later, at Deep Space 9, the saucer was mated to a surplus refit Constitution-class stardrive section and flown to Earth for a massive refit. This refit entailed bringing the Enterprise-A up to current standards, including the additions of facilities non-existant on the original Enterprise-A, including a USS Voyager-like Astrometrics lab and a Ten Forward lounge nicknamed the "Leaky Cauldron," after the favorite drinking establishment of the ship's now-largely Hogwarts-based crew.

After said refit, the re-commissioned Enterprise-A was instrumental in the return of James T. Kirk from the Nexus energy ribbon and the Federation/Klingon/Romulan/Dominion Remnant fleet's victory over the Suliban at Sagittarius IX.

After the Battle of Sagittarius IX, Rear Admiral Kathryn Janeway issued an order, granting special dispensation for the Enterprise-A to retain its name and registry number. This marked the first time in history that two ships named Enterprise would be in active service at the same time.
