Construction History

Construction began on the USS Constitution at the San Francisco Fleet Yards in November 2239, under the direction of Admiral William Jefferies. In 2242, while the Constitution was under construction, work began on the second vessel of the class, the unnamed NX-1701. Construction was completed in 2244, and she began a series of shakedown cruises. The first voyage was a round trip between Earth and the planetoid Babel with a passenger list that included Starfleet cadets, flag officers, and members of the Federation Diplomatic Corps. (TOS comic: "Who's Who in Star Trek 2")

A few weeks later, the Constitution was rushed to aid the USS Endeavour and the USS Yorkshire engaged in battle against Klingon vessels near Donatu V. The Constitution's enhanced warp drive and shields proved vital in the battle, and forced the Klingons back, creating a stalemate. As a result, the Constitution was turned into a floating hulk by the end of the battle. (TOS novels: Killing Blow, River of Blood, Seeds of Rage)

Service History

In late 2257, Lieutenant James T. Kirk was assigned to the Constitution following the disaster aboard the USS Farragut. Shortly after, on a mission to Sordinia IV, Kirk was forced to assumes command when Captain Augenthaler and the first officer were stranded on the planet following an attack by N'shaii satellites. Still fighting with grief, Kirk managed to overcome this and rallied the Constitution's crew to overcome the N'shaii threat. A few months later, Dr. Leonard McCoy came aboard the Constitution as assistant CMO. (TOS novels: Constitution, Enterprise)

In 2259, the Constitution remapped and resurveyed the surface of Capella IV and discovered rich, easily accessible veins of topaline located beneath the surface. (RPG reference: Worlds)

In 2263, Captain Augenthaler stepped down as commanding officer and Commodore Robert Wesley assumed command of the Constitution. (ST video game: Starship Creator)

The Constitution docked at Starbase 11 for repairs in 2267. (TOS episode: "Court Martial") She returned to Earth in late 2268 and was drydocked for heavy refitting. The USS Hood assumed her patrol duties. (TOS novel: Crisis on Centaurus)

The novel Cloak establishes that Captain Phil Waterston was commanding officer of the Constitution as of late 2268. It is uncertain when he took command, or when Wesley left Constitution for the USS Lexington, which he commanded in the episode "The Ultimate Computer.

In 2275, the Constitution greeted the USS Enterprise when the Enterprise came back from testing the inversion drive. (TOS novel: The Wounded Sky)

In 2293, a mural of the Constitution was on the wall of Starfleet Command. (TOS novel: The Ashes of Eden)

In 2364, a schematic of the Constitution was on Data’s computer. (TNG episode: "Datalore")

The USS Constitution (NCC-1700), named after the organizing charter and bylaws of a state or nation, was the prototype of the Constitution-class heavy cruisers in service to Starfleet in the 23rd century. She would unfortunately be destined to labor for her entire career in the shadow of her more famous sisters, both named Enterprise.

The Constitution was launched in 2244 on a maiden voyage between Earth and the neutral planetoid, Babel. Amongst the passengers aboard the Constitution were Starfleet cadets, various Starfleet flag officers and members of the Federation Diplomatic Corps, including Selok's great-grandfather, Tulor. (TOS comic: Who's Who in Star Trek; Star Trek: Daedalus: "Enlightenment")

Constitution was commanded by Fleet Captain Garth of Izar, most notably during the Axanar Rebellion of 2245-55, then by Commodore Darion Page from 2256-69 and lost in action. (Decipher ST:RPG Starships)

The Constitution was later destroyed in unreported circumstances. (Trekmania)

Star Trek: Avenger continuity

The Constitution, during the late 2250s, was the flagship of a task force commanded by Fleet Captain Garth at the Battle of Axanar (Star Trek: Avenger).

In the 2270s, the Constitution was the first Federation vessel to encounter a K't'inga-class (aka D7M) heavy battlecruiser. (From the Files of Star Fleet Command)

In the 2280s, the Constitution was commanded by Jason Genser. Many of his command staff would later go on to command their own vessels, such as the USS Avenger and the USS Challenger.

Star Trek: Shadowstar Station continuity

Kzin pirates attacked the interstellar liner SS Vymastre of Vega in 2284. Three-fourths of the crew and passengers were killed (and many eaten) before Federation starships — including the USS Constitution — engaged the pirates in combat. Carolyn Adiwoso was among the survivors. After several months in rehabilitation, she resigned from her firm. The next year, she entered Starfleet Academy. (Star Trek: Shadowstar Station: "Vymastre")

Star Trek: The Quarterdeck Breed continuity

Rear Admiral Clifford Winslow sought and won the appointment as the first captain of the Constitution. (Star Trek: The Quarterdeck Breed: "Constitution")
