USS Constellation (NCC-1017) was a Federation Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century. (ST reference: Star Trek Encyclopedia)

In 2267, the vessel's service came to an abrupt end when the ship was demolished by a planet-killing doomsday device. (TOS episode: "The Doomsday Machine")

Service history

The Constellation was one of the original batch of Constitution-class starships that were authorized for Starfleet appropriation on stardate 0965. She was finally built to Mk I Constitution specifications and entered service on reference stardate 2/8803. (TOS roleplay module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual)

Around the mid-23rd century, the Constellation was commanded by Starfleet officer Ran Armstrong. Captain Armstrong would later be promoted to the admiralty, eventually succeeded as Constellation CO by Commodore Matthew Decker. (TOS novel: Dreadnought!)

When Commodore Decker took command, he offered the position of first officer to Commander Anne Gauvreau, his XO from his previous command, the USS Yorktown. Gauvreau declined because she wanted a starship command. (TOS novel: Prime Directive)

On stardate 2/0211, the Constellation was relaunched after being refit to Mk III (Achernar-subclass) specifications. As well as receiving new technologies, several cosmetic changes were also made to the ship. In 2265, Starfleet Command planned to make similar changes to several other Constitution-class vessels, including the USS Defiant and the USS Enterprise. (TOS roleplay module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual; TOS - Crucible novel: The Fire and the Rose)

In 2263, the Constellation discovered a mold on planet Ravanar IV with an unusually large DNA sequence, dubbed a "meta-genome". This discovery led to the fast-tracking of the construction of Starbase Vanguard. (VGD novel: Harbinger)

In late 2265 or early 2266, the Constellation established a mining outpost on Beta Argola. During this mission, one of the miners suffered a psychotic episode, and nearly killed Commander Hiromi Takeshewada and Lieutenant Etienne Vascogne.

In 2266, the Constellation responded to an emergency distress call from Alpha Proxima II, along with the Enterprise, where an unidentified plague had incapacitated the government. Decker and Enterprise commander James T. Kirk imposed martial law on the planet until the alien artifact causing the plague was seized and destroyed. (TOS - The Brave and the Bold novella: The First Artifact)

In early 2267, the Constellation received an overhaul of its defensive and tactical systems as part of a Starfleet-wide refit program in preparation for the coming war with the Klingon Empire. (TOS - Errand of Fury novel: Demands of Honor)

The Constellation before a doomsday machine

In 2267, Constellation was destroyed with all hands in a successful effort to stop an extra-galactic "planet killer" threatening Federation planets. (TOS episode: "The Doomsday Machine")

A new Constitution class starship, the USS Constellation began construction shortly after.

USS Constellation (NCC-1017) was a Constitution-class heavy cruiser active in the 23rd century. (TOS: "The Doomsday Machine"; Star Fleet Technical Manual)
Two fan Treknology sources — the Heavy Cruiser Evolution Blueprints and Ships of the Star Fleet — posited that Constellation had been refit from a Horizon-class vessel, hence the relatively low NCC number.

One of Constellation's commanding officers prior to Matthew Decker was Ran Armstrong. (TOS novel: Dreadnought!)

Under Commodore Decker's command, Constellation discovered the meta-genome in the Taurus Reach in 2263. (Star Trek: Vanguard novel: Harbinger)

Four years later, on stardate 4202.1, Constellation investigated the destruction of solar systems L-370 and L-374. The ship was subsequently attacked by the so-called planet killer and heavily damaged. Commodore Decker beamed his crew down to planet L-374 III, while he remained aboard. The planet killer's next attack took out the ship's transporters, stranding the crew while it destroyed the planet.

The Constellation was left adrift. Discovered by the USS Enterprise, it was detonated inside the planet killer, rendering the weapon inert. (TOS: "The Doomsday Machine")

The Constellation, adrift

However this detonation caused the chronitons within the weapon to become active and sent the device back in time to 2254 where it destroyed Enterprise, creating an alternate timeline, a series of destructive battles known as the Doomsday War. (STNV: "In Harm's Way")

Another Constitution-class heavy cruiser would be named Constellation (and given the same registry number); her commander was Captain Mike Walsh. (TOS novel: My Enemy, My Ally)

In the early 2280s, the second Constellation, under the command of Captain Carmen Ikeya, would be destroyed when the star Achernar went nova. (TOS novel: Time for Yesterday)

Alternate realities

In the Star Trek: Counter Worlds episode "The Klingon Invasion'" the USS Constellation is heavily damaged in a fire fight with three Klingon Battle cruisers. The Constellation is found by Captain James T. Kirk, who boards her with a landing party only to discover that the entire crew has been killed by the Klingons -including her Captian, Commodore Decker. After retrieving all pertinent information Kirk orders the Constellation to self destruct in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Klingons.
