The USS Challenger was a Constitution class heavy cruiser launched in 2267 and the last original configuration vessel of the class to be launched.
In 2270 under command of Captain Tobius McCarthy the ship was conducting a survey of distant Beta Quadrant planets when it was recalled to be refitted however, en-route to Earth the ship disappeared.
It then emerged from a Temporal vortex in 2388 nearby the USS Pioneer just prior to the Battle of the Devron system. (Star Trek: Pioneer (PNR): "Predestination")
Starfleet later made the unusual move to allow the ship to rejoin the fleet. (Star Trek: Pioneer (PNR): "Tarlus' Ressurection")
