The United Nations (UN for short) functioned as a coalition of Earth nations, which also created international campaigns and programs. The UN co-ordinated many of these efforts from its office in Geneva, Switzerland, the second-largest UN office outside of its New York City headquarters.

In the late 20th century, the UN put together the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce (later the Unified Intelligence Taskforce) in order to defend the Earth against threats such as the Great Intelligence; UNIT Central Control was placed in Geneva. (DW: The Invasion et al). This was done due to direct appeal by Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. (MA: Who Killed Kennedy)
In the 1980s, the UN was overseeing a space agency, International Space Command. (DW: The Tenth Planet)
In 1994, the UN's Security Yard gained its own military branch, UNISYC; it would squabble with other UN factions for alien weaponry in 1996. (EDA: Interference - Book One)
During the 2000s, due to an unspecified incident, the UN possessed the launch codes for the United Kingdom's nuclear deterrent. (DW: World War Three) Due to a sharp increase in alien incidents, the UN increased funding for UNIT under a policy of "homeworld security". (DW: The Sontaran Strategem) It also went into emergency session when faced with such apocalyptic events like the Moon heading towards Earth. (SJA: The Lost Boy)
In 2009, the United Nations surrendered the Earth in the face of a massed Dalek assault. (DW: The Stolen Earth)
In later years of the 21st Century, the United Nations possibly replaced UNIT with UNISYC (EDA: Alien Bodies) and/or PRISM (PDA: The Indestructible Man). It possibly transformed into a world government. (DW: The Enemy of the World, PDA: The Indestructible Man)
After the broadcast of Aliens of London, it was announced that the United Nations were no longer happy to be directly associated with UNIT. The term "UN" could, however, be used as long as it wasn't stated what it stood for. [1] Subsequent stories, UNIT's name has not been explained. Later it was shown to stand for United Intelligence Taskforce.
(1945-2052) In the Fallout universe in May 2052, the United Nations began to collapse, due to the start of the Resource Wars following the European Commonwealth's military intervention in the Middle East. The oil-rich states of the Middle East had raised crude oil prices to near confiscatory levels in light of the growing global petroleum shortage. Facing an economic disaster because of European nations' heavy reliance on imported Middle Eastern oil, the European Commonwealth had invaded the Middle East to force its states to lower oil prices or to seize their remaining reserves of petroleum. The United Nations actively tried to restore the peace with nothing to show for their efforts. As natural resource pressures grew and the United Nations' impotence to maintain a stable international order became clear, many member nations withdrew from the organization, prepared to use military force to defend what was theirs or seize what was somebody else's. The United Nations General Assembly finally disbanded the organization on July 27, 2052 after the majority of its member-states had withdrawn from it. Its last Secretary-General was an Indian diplomat, Sakugama Okiri.

The United Nations (UN) is an international organization[2] assembled on Earth and the predecessor of UNSC and United Earth Government.

The idea of a United Nations system of global governance began in 1920 after the end of World War I. The brainchild of American President Woodrow Wilson, the purpose of the League of Nations was to spark economic development and to keep the peace after the destruction of the war. However, this organization would soon collapse without the support of the United States Congress. The concept would return in 1945 after the Second World War. A significant time in human history, as it sparked tensions between the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which lead to the space race and the development of many advanced technologies. Had humanity not endured the Cold War, it is likely that humanity would have been even less prepared for interstellar age, and the inevitable war that followed.
The U.N. began as an international organization that described itself as a "global association of governments facilitating co-operation in international law, international security, economic development, and social equity." It was founded on June 26, 1945 after the end of the Second World War at the signing of the United Nations Charter by 51 countries, replacing the previous "League of Nations."
By the time humanity began colonizing the other planets of the Sol System, the United Nations gained control over the nations of Earth, uniting them under a common government, the United Earth Government - an imperative governance change in order to maintain peace and prosperity among the colonies of the UN. However, some of the UN's attempts to maintain peace failed, resulting in the Interplanetary War of 2160 - 2164.[3]
Eventually, the UN developed the "United Nations Space Command," which policed space. The UNSC became the main military body of Earth's "empire".
As far as the 26th century, the UN still existed in a similar fashion to how it was when created. The colonies themselves acted as their own nations rather than mere exclaves of the UEG, able to make their own laws.
