Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan was the third expansion pack for the MMO Star Wars Galaxies. It was announced on August 19, 2005 and released on November 1, 2005.

This expansion added the ground planet of Mustafar to the game, and was designed to capitalize on the DVD release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and its final fight sequence between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was set on the same planet. Trials of Obi-Wan includes more than 50 new quests, from rescue missions to the exploration of a crashed Republic cruiser. Many quests also revolve around the return of HK-47 from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, whom players can kill for a quest. The expansion also allows players to interact with the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi to help him "correct an imbalance in the Force" present on Mustafar. High-level quest rewards include the ability to find a fiery red crystal found only on the volcanic planet that creates a lava-like lightsaber. No new space sector was added with this expansion.

Boxed Set

Trials of Obi-Wan is also available in the The Complete Online Adventures compilation pack.

Pre-Order Offer

Bonus Offer If you pre-ordered 'Trials of Obi-Wan' before 12:01am of October 25 2005, you would have received three exclusive in-game items on your first login after installing the Expansion.

8 Player Transport Skiff

As seen in Return of the Jedi this transport skiff was used by Jabba to transport his prisoners over the Pit of Carkoon. This in-game item will allow you and eight of your friends to travel the expansive areas on each planet. This vehicle will not only hold more players than ever before but it is also the fastest multi-player vehicle available. Don't worry with this expansion players will also receive 3 new slots giving them the ability to store more vehicles.

Lava Flea creature mount

This mount is the only mount that will allow you to travel the Lava world of Mustafar safely. These creatures native to the planet have built defenses against its environment. Use these innate abilities to allow you to explore this violent world.

Three additional vehicle storage slots

Every player who order the Trials of Obi-Wan will also receive 3 additional vehicle storage slots in their datapad, so they will able to have total 6 vehicles in datapad on each character.

Bunker style player house

This player house is a completely new design that will allow a user to place it on one lot while having a large space to decorate or use in any fashion one chooses. These houses can be used as both residency and also a guild hall. The dev's paid special consideration to decorating, admitting that some of the homes in SWG do not lend themselves well to design.

And if that was not enough to sell you, they also allowed pre-order players access to the expansion a week before the actual release date. This access began on October 25, 2005.

To get a jump on Obi-Wan’s quests and an early look at the new items many players pre-ordered the expansion.

Following is a copy of the press-release announcing the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion for Star Wars Galaxies. This page will be updated with information as it becomes available.

August 19, 2005 - LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment Inc. ( SOE ) today unveiled Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan to the cheers of Star Wars Galaxies ™ enthusiasts gathered for a fan breakfast at the 2005 Games Convention in Leipzig , Germany. This third expansion to the popular immersive online game is scheduled for release on November 1st, alongside the Star Wars : Episode III Revenge of the Sith theatrical DVD and Star Wars Battlefront ™ II video game. The companies also revealed that more than 1 million units of the Star Wars Galaxies franchise have now been sold, a testament to its ongoing popularity.

Like Obi-Wan Kenobi after his death, Star Wars Galaxies has become "more powerful than you can possibly imagine." Appropriately, Trials of Obi-Wan allows players to better understand the meaning of these final words spoken by Luke Skywalker's mentor, as they embark upon missions delivered directly from the spirit of the revered Jedi Master himself. From the very shores of molten lava where he defeated Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan guides players on quests that span the planet Mustafar - some of which might even convert devotees of the dark side over to a more virtuous path. This expansion features many new high-level quest rewards, including the ability to find a fiery red crystal found only on the volcanic planet that creates a lava-like lightsaber for the lucky owner. Players who fulfill all of Obi-Wan's directives will also receive a rich reward.

Mustafar colonists present many exciting trials of their own, too, as Trials of Obi-Wan includes more than 50 new quests for the galaxy's bravest adventurers, from rescue missions to the exploration of a crashed Republic cruiser. Many quests also revolve around a prominent figure from Star Wars ® : Knights of the Old Republic ® who returns 4,000 years after his prime with one simple mission in mind: Eliminate all meatbags.

"With Trials of Obi-Wan being an expansion set for release via digital download the same day as the Episode III DVD, we can't think of a better planet to add to Star Wars Galaxies than Mustafar," said Julio Torres, Producer at LucasArts. "Meanwhile, including the spirit of Obi-Wan nicely bridges the prequel era and the more classic-oriented time period depicted in the game. We're really excited about continuing mythology established by other LucasArts games, as well."

The release of Trials of Obi-Wan will provide a significant boost to a franchise that has already sold more than 1 million units worldwide. In recent months, interest and subscriptions in Star Wars Galaxies has grown, fueled by recent game additions, as well as the connection of the game content to Star Wars : Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

"A lot of positive changes have taken effect since Star Wars Galaxies first launched," said Nancy MacIntyre, LucasArts' Senior Director for the game. "We've picked up quite a few new fans and reintroduced many others to the game, especially since the Rage of the Wookiees expansion in May. Trials of Obi-Wan will only further this positive momentum."

Letter to the Community

In a letter to the community, Grant “Rogue_5” McDaniel, SOE Producer, revealed more information on the upcoming expansion.

  1. Is this a Jedi expansion?
Absolutely not. This expansion has content and adventures for all types of Star Wars Galaxies players.
  2. I'm not a is there any reason for me to obtain the Trials of Obi-Wan Expansion?
Of course. All players will be able to converse with Obi-Wan and help him on his quests. Additionally, there will be many other quests as well as other reasons to explore the planet of Mustafar. And, the planet itself is so completely unique when compared to the rest of the planets in our game, that I think many people will just enjoy exploring and adventuring anywhere they can. (A lot more than Anakin!)
  3. Trials of Obi-Wan: Will there be a new playable species? How about new NPC species?
We did not add any new playable species. However, Mustafar is home to two new native NPC species that you will find in the expansion (more on them later).
  4. Why was Obi-Wan chosen to appear at this point in the timeline since he hadn't yet visited Luke Skywalker?
Events on Mustafar have caused a major disturbance in the Force, unleashing unknown dangers that could empower the dark side if not stopped. These events have led Obi-Wan Kenobi's spirit back to Mustafar to investigate how to eliminate this evil presence. With your help, he hopes to resolve the situation so that he can then move on to help the boy who could be our last hope…
  5. What are some of the highlights of the expansion?
Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan takes place on a harsh lava world unlike anything seen in our current game. There, you'll find a lava river and erupting volcanoes, as well as other dark and mysterious caves and dwellings. The expansion is built around the fiction of Mustafar, so there are many new story-driven quests, some of which revolve around Old Republic technology that has been discovered there. There will be lots of high-level loot, cool new reward items and features (including an increase in the number of ground vehicles that can be stored and used by the player), and many more exciting things that I look forward to sharing with you soon. All of these aspects combine to make this expansion look and feel like you are literally walking into the world of Episode III.
  6. Is there anything else you can share about the expansion that hasn't been discussed yet?
Yes. There are a lot of new features as I have mentioned above, and they will be revealed over the next few weeks. I would love to reveal them now – but then they would have kill me! However, here is a little bit more background fiction, which gives a hint as to some of what is occurring on Mustafar:
Trials of Obi-Wan
Rumors speed through the galaxy. Tales of
ancient treasure draw intrepid adventurers
and pitiless profiteers toward a little-known
volcanic moon.
Mustafar, once a simple mining planet, now
suffers in the merciless grip of greed.
Some have come for the Old Republic
technology, treasures that lie buried in the
blackened soil. Others seek the truth
behind the charred ruins and mysterious
temple mounds.
But a deeper secret waits. Strange crystal
shards, filled with amazing power, have
drawn dark forces to the burning planet.
And a hero, once thought lost, has returned
to face them…
