Career

Trelane was a member of the Q Continuum who the crew of the USS Enterprise encountered in 2267. Trelane harassed the crew of the Enterprise before he was found by his parents and taken home. At the time Trelane was fascinated with 18th century French culture. (TOS episode: "The Squire of Gothos")

Trelane later escaped from his parents again. The Enterprise again encountered Trelane in 2269 while investigating the disappearance of several vessels. During their second encounter, Trelane had became fascinated with the First World War. Trelane attacked the Enterprise with a space vessel made to resemble an early biplane. Kirk and the Enterprise crew were able to defeat the biplane, but Trelane then subjected several Starfleet officers to a simulation of a period German village. Kirk was again able to disrupt Trelane's power, and Trelane's nanny discovered him and took him away. (TOS video game: Judgment Rites)

Alternatively, the player could have Kirk talk Trelane into taking him to a simulation of a real World War I battlefield, rather than the romanticized version Trelane had created. After Kirk tries to convince Trelane that there's nothing romantic about war, Trelane loses interest in holding the Enterprise or the other ships, and allows them to leave.

In the 24th century, the crew of the USS Enterprise-D encountered Trelane, and finally learned that he was a member of the Q Continuum. Working with Q, they managed to keep Trelane from merging all the different universes into a single universe. (TNG novel: Q-Squared)

Trelane was a powerful alien encountered first encountered by the crew of the USS Enterprise in 2267. (TOS: "The Squire of Gothos")

It was later revealed the Trelane was actually a member of the Q Continuum. (TNG novel: Q-Squared; Star Trek: Daedalus: "Fracture")

Crime and punishment

After suffering some minor punishment from his family following the incident with the Enterprise, Trelane was once again able to escape back to Gothos and began plucking starships from space-time and shrunk them down and placed them inside bottles. At the same time, Trelane developed a fascination with Earth's First World War - especially with the rudimentary aircraft that were in use at that time.

As the Enterprise once again approached Gothos on the trail of the missing spacecraft, Trelane decided to launch an attack against the starship in an ancient bi-plane, which the Enterprise was easily able to dispatch. Not being one to give up, Trelane transported Captain Kirk and several Enterprise officers into a recreation of a small German village at the time of the First World War. Unfortunately, Kirk and his team were able to disrupt Trelane's powers once again, and a "nanny" from the Q Continuum arrived to return him home. (TOS video game: Star Trek: 25th Anniversary; "The Great Architect")

For a time, Q served as Trelane's "nanny" and minder in an attempt to remain in favor with the Continuum. To wile the time away, Trelane and Q would often play elaborate games which appeared as a simple games to them but used individuals in the real world as pawns. On one occasion they transposed Captains' James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard and placed them in command of each others vessels (the original USS Enterprise and the USS Enterprise-E respectively) and placed them against various adversaries in an attempt to prove which starship commander was the superior. Eventually, both Enterprise crews managed to end the game and all the players were returned to their proper places with no memories of these events. (Star Trek: Unlimited comic: "An Infinite Jest", "The Great Architect")

A while later, Trelane was once again able to escape from the Continuum and began to wreak havoc by merging the entirety of the multiverse into one single universe. Fortunately, the combined talents of Q and the USS Enterprise-D were able to stop Trelane from his mad plans. (TNG novel: Q-Squared)

Following his attempts to destroy the multiverse, the Q decided to exile Trelane from the Continuum. In order to prevent him from creating further chaos, they placed him at the center of Gothos, sent the planet back in time millions of years, and broke it up, allowing a debris field to form around the planet, which would prevent others approaching the planet. ("From Out of the Darkness"; "Fracture")
