Tree Father Birch is the "leader" of the Treeminders in the Oasis. He is the husband of Leaf Mother Laurel and the father of Sapling Yew in the year 2277.

Birch was born in 2227[1].

Daily schedule

Birch spends most of his time in the Pavilion, siting on his throne, occasionally eating, and sleeping for a few hours at night. He also walks around Oasis, overseeing the village more directly. While the village is ostensibly a democratic commune, Tree Father Birch sees himself as the group's spiritual and temporal leader. He has cast himself in role similar to a high priest, worshiping the god spirit, Harold.

Interactions with the player character

He greets you upon nearing the entrance. After leading you to the center of the grove. Birch will enter conversation which will begin the Oasis (quest). Players can use Speech to learn of the (believed) nature of Harold and also use the Animal Friend or Life Giver Perk for special dialogue options, commenting on the abundance of wildlife or state the oasis seems teeming with life, respectively, but these options have no effect on the outcome. After speaking to Harold the first time, Birch will give the player the Birch's Sap that will cease Harold's growth.

All Treeminders have tree- or plant-related names.

  • On the PS3 version of Fallout 3, if Tree Father Birch becomes hostile to the play for whatever reason, he may fall onto the ground instantly. He can then be "executed" easily. This occurred only when he was sitting on his throne.
  • When told "Welcome back to the Wasteland, asshole" after Harold's heart is destroyed, Birch replies "You're words sting" - an extremely rare example of a typo in conversation.

Tree Father Birch appears only in Fallout 3.
