Rise of the Empire era[2]

Sarge: "There's General Traavis."
Evan: "Wow! A real Jedi!"
―Clone commando Sarge introducing a young refugee boy to Traavis

Traavis was a male Human from the Skip 5—an asteroid in the Smuggler's Run—who later became a Jedi Knight in the Jedi Order during the final years of the Republic. When the Clone Wars broke out between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Traavis became a Jedi General in the Grand Army of the Republic, and commanded a number of clone soldiers. In 19 BBY, at the end of the war, Traavis led a five month long campaign against Separatist stronghold planets in the Outer Rim, including Monhudle, New Bakstre, and Biitu. In the final days of the war, Traavis moved his troops to the Confederate world of Garqi, and after securing the planet, began to inspect the overcrowded refugee camps that had been set up for Garqi's displaced populace. It was during this that Traavis's clone troops' received Order 66—one of the Republic Army's contingency orders that instructed its clone forces to eliminate the Jedi—from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was actually the Sith Lord Darth Sidious in disguise. Aiwha Squad, a clone commando squad under Traavis's command, quickly attacked their general, catching the Jedi Knight unprepared, killing him with blaster fire.

Early life

Traavis was a male human who was born on Skip 5, an asteroid in the Smuggler's Run asteroid belt in Wild Space. He was later discovered to be force-sensitive, and became a member of the Jedi Order in the final years of the Galactic Republic, attaining the rank of Jedi Knight by 19 BBY.[1]

The Clone Wars and Order 66

"Commandos! Execute Order 66!"
―Sarge, telling Aiwha Squad to kill Traavis because of Order 66

After the Clone Wars broke out in 22 BBY between the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems—which had seceded from the Republic—Traavis became a Jedi General in the newly formed Grand Army of the Republic and began to lead the Army's clone soldiers into battle. In 19 BBY, during Outer Rim Sieges at the end of the war, Traavis led a five month long campaign against the Confederate controlled Cassandran Worlds of Monhudle, New Bakstre, and Biitu in the Outer Rim. In the final days of the conflict, Traavis moved his forces to the Separatist planet of Garqi, and after his troops secured most of the planet, the Jedi Knight began to inspect the overcrowded refugee camps, trying to help Garqi's displaced populace.[1] Also, during the battle, the Republic accidentally bombed a small civilian village while trying to destroy a group of Separatist battle droids, so Traavis sent Aiwha Squad—a clone commando squad under his command—to search for survivors.[2]

Some days later, while Traavis was inspecting a nearby refugee camp, the commandos returned, bringing a small human boy named Evan who had survived the bombings. Traavis commended the Aiwha Squad on their successful mission, and informed them that General Grievous, the Supreme Commander of the Separatist Droid Army, had been killed, and that the war was likely near its end. However, as Traavis was telling them this, Aiwha Squad's leader, Sarge, received Order 66 from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.[2] Order 66 was one of the GAR's 150 contingency orders that instructed the clone soldiers across the galaxy to eliminate all the Jedi, and Palpatine was actually the Sith Lord Darth Sidious in disguise.[1] Sarge quickly ordered his commandos to fire on General Traavis, catching the Jedi Knight by surprise. Traavis tried to reach for his lightsaber at his belt to defend himself, but he was not fast enough, and was cut down in a hail of blaster fire from the commandos.[2]

"Terminated in the act of stealing refugee children for Jedi indoctrination."
―Imperial propaganda about the reason for Traavis's death

As Traavis died, all across the galaxy, Jedi were being killed by their clone forces, with Palpatine saying the Jedi were "rebelling". Palpatine used this "Jedi rebellion" as an excuse to reorganize the Republic into the Galactic Empire, and crown himself as Galactic Emperor. Soon after the creation of the Empire, propaganda created by Imperial Grand Vizier Sate Pestage stated that Traavis was killed while trying kidnap refugee children to be "indoctrinated" as Jedi.[1]

Personality and traits

"Poor lad. Let's find a cot and get you some decent food."
―Traavis, to the refugee boy Evan

Traavis cared about those who had been displaced by war, taking his time to inspect overcrowded refugee camps and safe guard them with his own troops. When he saw Evan, who's parents had been killed and his home destroyed, he tried to make sure he would be taken good care of properly. He was also willing to send his own clone soldiers deep into enemy territory to search for any surviving refugees.

Traavis trusted his own clone troopers enough that he was not prepared for them to attack him when Order 66 was declared. As a result, he had no chance of defending himself before he was slain by his own troops.

Behind the scenes

Traavis first appeared in the short Clone Wars Adventures comic, Orders, released in the Clone Wars Adventures: Volume 4 October 19, 2005. Traavis was later given his own entry in the in-universe reference article, Order 66: Destroy All Jedi, which was published in Star Wars Insider 87 in the April of 2008.

Ryan Kaufman, the writer of Orders, named Traavis after Karen Traviss, the author of the Republic Commando novels.[3]
