Notable features Explains to players about Player Moderators
The town crier in Draynor Village

A Town crier is an NPC found in several areas across RuneScape. They talk about Player moderators, Rules of Conduct and also give good tips. The town criers were added in the updates of 17 July 2007[1].

According to the Varrock Census in the library, his name is Gryff Aldock.

Players can know they are near one if they have sound on by the bell ringing sound they make.

When a player moderator in-game talks to a town crier, they have access to a few more questions to ask him. This is likely to be player moderator related questions.

When asked about player moderators, and then how to become one, the crier's final suggestion is "Be excellent to each other!" This is a reference to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. The protagonists of these movies were a pair of teenage Californians whose chief signature mottos were "Be excellent to each other" and "Party on, dudes!"

The Town crier in East Ardougne is one of the NPC's you can start the Ardougne Diary by talking to, and will give you the Ardougne cloak 2 as a reward for completing the medium tasks. If you lose the cloak, you can talk to him for another.

Tips of a Town Crier

Note: This list may be incomplete.
  • "Did you know? You burn food less often on a range than on a fire!"
  • "Mêlée actually gives you disadvantages when using magic attacks. It may be better to take off your armour entirely!"
  • "Take time to check the second trade window carefully. Don't be scammed!"
  • "Never lend your items out unless you expect them not to come back."
  • "Did you know mithril armour is lighter than other armour?"
  • "Did you know you burn food less often on the range in Lumbridge castle than other ranges?"
  • "Did you know having a bank pin can help secure your valuable items?"
  • "Did you know? Superheat Item means you never fail to smelt ore!"
  • "Did you know that mithril equipment is very light?"
  • "The squirrels! The squirrels are coming! Noooo, get them out of my head!"
  • "If you're lost and have no idea where to go, use the Home Teleport spell for free!"
  • "If the chat window is moving too quickly to report a player accurately, run to a quiet spot and review the chat at your leisure!"
  • "Be careful when fighting wizards! Wearing heavy armour can lower your Magic resistance!"
  • "If you see someone breaking the rules, report them!"
  • "Never question a penguin."
  • "If you're stuck on a skill, talk to the Lumbridge Tutors for help and tips."
  • "Beware of players trying to lure you into the wilderness. Your items cannot be returned if you lose them!"
  • "Make your recovery questions and answers hard to guess but easy to remember."
  • "Never tell your password to anyone, not even your best friend!"
  • "Players cannot trim armour. Don't fall for this popular scam!"
  • "Did you know that you can wear a shield with a crossbow?"
  • "Did you know that most skills have right-click "Make-X" options to help you train faster?"
  • "Jagex will never e-mail you asking for your log-in details."
  • "Don't use your RuneScape password on other sites. Keep your account safe!"
  • "If you think someone knows your password - change it!"
  • "Feeling harassed? Don't forget that your ignore list can be especially useful if a player seems to be picking on you!"
  • "Never let anyone else use your account"

  • East Ardougne - in the market - this one can be helpful to players stealing cakes from the baker in Ardougne as he gets in the way of the guards and keeps the player safe.
  • Draynor Village - in the market
  • Falador - near the west bank
  • Varrock - near the east bank, and next to the dummy place, and the park
  • Seers' Village - near the bank

  • He says: "Never lend your items out unless you expect them not to come back," but now this is untrue with the new item lending system.
  • The phrase, "Beware of players trying to lure you into the wilderness. Your items cannot be returned if you lose them!" is now only true in PVP Worlds and Bounty Worlds.
  • The two phrases, "Did you know mithril armour is lighter than other armour?" and "Did you know that mithril equipment is very light?" are pretty much the same messages, but in different forms.
  • When asking him about becoming a player moderator. In the last chat screen he says the phrase: "Be excellent to each other!" Which may be a reference to Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey [1]
  • They seem to worship gods, as their 'uniform' is Green, Blue and Red, respectively.
  • They will occasionally ring the bell, but a sour note will come and they will shake and hold their head.
