Times Square was a major intersection in New York City, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, extending from West 42nd to West 47th Streets.

Times Square is famed for its annual New Year's Eve celebration, a tradition begun in the early 20th century. This tradition continued at least through the end of the 22nd century.

In an alternate timeline, Trip Tucker and T'Pol attended the New Year's Eve celebrations at Times Square in 2199, and Tucker was tragically killed while protecting T'Pol from a gang of young xenophobes. (Star Trek: Myriad Universes novel: A Less Perfect Union)

History

Times Square is a major intersection in Manhattan, New York City at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. The Times Square area consists of the blocks between Sixth and Eighth Avenues from east to west, and West 40th and West 53rd Streets from south to north, making up the western part of the commercial area of Midtown Manhattan.

In the Pre-Crisis timeline, Times Square is where the Freedom Fighters arrived some time after bringing World War II to an end on the beleagured alternate reality known as Earth-X. Bored and in need of adventure, they came to Earth-One and fought againt the villain known as the Silver Ghost in Times Square. [1]

When the alien Despero came to Earth in another bid to wipe out the Justice League, he met resistance from not only Justice League Europe, but also Lobo, who had been hired by Lord Manga Khan to retrieve him. The fight took place in the center of Times Square, which suffered massive amounts of property damage, owing largely to the misplaced actions of Major Disaster. Major Disaster was to serve as the JLE's "ace-in-the-hole", but his inability to control his powers, caused widespread chaos across the intersection, and did little to stop Despero. The JLE's allies Kilowog and L-Ron stopped Despero by downloading L-Ron's programming into a bio-electrical construct that took control of Despero's mind. With L-Ron in control of Despero, the attack ceased. Lord Manga Khan, feeling responsible for the carnage, offered to finance the reconstruction of Times Square. [2]

During the "Total Chaos" affair, the Team Titans attacked a helicopter that were transporting the Titans to S.T.A.R. Labs. The helicopter was destroyed and plummeted to the street of Times Square. The Titans however, managed to escape the vehicle without injury. [3]

Times Square is also where New York City Councilwoman Elizabeth Alderman arrested Deathstroke the Terminator. [4]

Times Square was later the scene of a massive race riot incited by two rival controversial talking heads named Cyrus Bramlett and Austin Phipps. Green Lantern (Kyle Rayner) and Green Arrow (Connor Hawke) quelled the riots and exposed mass murderer Nicholas Kotero as the architect of the riots. [5]

Shortly after Infinite Crisis, Donna Troy briefly assumed the role of Wonder Woman. The sorceress Circe enlisted the aid of several of Wonder Woman's most notorious adversaries including Giganta, Doctor Psycho and the Cheetah to capture all of Wonder Woman's allies. The battle took place in Times Square and also included the teen super-hero Wonder Girl. The real Wonder Woman, having assumed the guise of DMA agent Diana Prince joined the battle along with the Olympian hero Hercules. [6]

Trivia

  • In the alternate future timeline of the Team Titans, Times Square was renamed "Chaos Square". [7]

As one of the most populated districts in Manhattan, Times Square has been the sight of many major battles between superhuman opponents. Years ago, after participating in an adventure in Asgard, Odin sent the incredible Hulk back to Earth where he arrived in Times Square. Though he wanted nothing more than to be left alone, the Hulk ultimately found himself in combat against military forces. This was not the first of such encounters for the green behemoth, and it would certainly not be the last time that visitors to Times Square would witness wanton displays of violence by the Hulk. [1]

During a New Year's celebration, the futuristic warrior woman Thundra came to this era to publicly challenge the Thing to a trial by combat. To garauntee the Thing's cooperation, she kidnapped his girlfriend Alicia Masters. [2]

In recent years, Times Square was the sight of a major battle between the New Avengers and a rogue Hulkbuster Iron Man Armor. The real Iron Man, Tony Stark, temporarily killed himself in order to shut down the armor's systems. [3]

Soon after, a great stone ship piloted by the formerly exiled hero the Hulk appeared in the sky over Times Square. The Hulk, bent on revenge against those whom he blamed for the death of his wife and child, warned everyone to evacuate the city or else they would suffer his anger. Several heroes, including Iron Man, arrived in Times Square in the hopes of preventing an event that would come to be known as "World War Hulk". [4]

More recently, Times Square was the scene of a battle between the Thunderbolts and Spider-Man. The Thunderbolts sought to sanction Spider-Man for illegally violating the Superhuman Registration Act. Their fight was interupted by the sudden appearance of the time-displaced World War II heroes, the Invaders. [5]

At this same time, Times Square was also attacked by a massive contingent of Super-Skrull invaders. Nearly every registered member of the Initiative fought valiantly to repel the invaders, but suffered great losses in the ensuing carnage. [6]
