Tiamat (ティアマット Tiamatto) is a recurring enemy and boss in the Final Fantasy series. Always a dragon, Tiamat is usually one of the final bosses in a game, or at least one of the harder enemies the party encounters. Tiamat is sometimes teamed up with Marilith, the Kraken, and the Lich to make the Four Fiends.

Tiamat made her first appearance in the original Final Fantasy. Here, she was one of the Four Fiends, and was actually the strongest, since she was fought last in the Flying Fortress. Defeating her opens the way to the depths of the Whisperwind Cove .

Final Fantasy VIII

Main article: Tiamat (Final Fantasy VIII)

Tiamat is found in Ultimecia Castle, as one of the bosses who is locking out commands. It is possible to draw the Guardian Force Eden out of it, without having to fight Ultima Weapon. Tiamat appears as a recolored Bahamut "clone", and does not have multiple heads like in previous incarnations.

Final Fantasy IX

Main article: Tiamat (Final Fantasy IX)

Tiamat first appears as the Wind Guardian against Steiner and Vivi. The whole party only fights it as Tiamat later in Memoria. A crystal clone of Tiamat can also be found as a random encounter at the Crystal World.

Final Fantasy XI

Tiamat is a Hyper Notorious Monster found in the depths of the Attohwa Chasm. One of the three "Grand Wyrms" introduced in the Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia expansion (along with Jormungand and Vrtra), Tiamat boasts one of the highest levels and greatest HP pools in the game, estimated at Level 95. Though the three are known chiefly for their abysmal loot pools, Tiamat remains the only Grand Wyrm actively camped by the endgame community today on account of its Herald's Gators drop item, which increase movement speed for particular mage jobs (and has consequently been the only source of motion enhancement for many of its listed jobs since introduced years ago, and thus fetch a high selling price). Tiamat's spawning conditions are brutal, as she has a brief window in which to spawn once every 30 minutes, beginning 72 hours after her last demise, lasting for exactly 48 hours (ergo 96 windows over the course of two days), requiring Linkshell groups to spend ridiculous spans of time waiting for her to make an appearance. The fight itself can prove tricky, as she has capabilities outside that of other monsters in the Wyrm family, such as the ability to cast Firaga III, and even take to the skies and belch fire on nearby players. Engaging Tiamat in physical combat proves worthless, as she is technically a Warrior, and as such has access to the Two-hour ability Mighty Strikes, which makes all her attacks critical hits; coupled with the fact that she has an extremely high Counter rate, high level tanks are easily beaten down in a few swings. Additionally, other monsters at the suggested battleground in the Chasm tend to interfere greatly with the fight, and can also be the subject of a complete wipe. The area's irregular terrain can furthermore cause Tiamat to spin because of faulty directional artificial intelligence, causing her to show her side, and technically register in server data as hate being produced from behind her, triggering a Spike Flail which abruptly kills everyone in range. In the Chains of Promathia storyline, Tiamat is perpetually hunted by the Shikaree Sisters, three Mithran hunters who fair from Olzhirya, the Mithran homeland, which will likely never be released as an explorable area this late in the game's lifespan.

Final Fantasy XII

Main article: Tiamat (Final Fantasy XII)

Tiamat is a boss fought in the Henne Mines, summoned by a mist-fueled Mjrn.

Final Fantasy XIII

Main article: Tiamat (Final Fantasy XIII)

Final Fantasy Tactics

Main article: Hydra (Final Fantasy Tactics)

Rather than a boss, Tiamat is a member of the Hydra race of monsters in Final Fantasy Tactics. They are, however, the strongest monsters in that monster family, and arguably the toughest monsters in the game.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Tiamat is a Thundrake that appears during Mission #79 Wind Sigil as the Falgabird of Wind. It was fought with the Redwings (Mog Knights) accompanying it.

Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift

Tiamat is a type of Drake that appears at Brightmoon Tor.
