Cookie Monster and Betty Lou enjoy the Circus of Opposites, with Guy Smiley as ringmaster. Various Muppet characters perform different acts; Herry walks the tightrope, showing wet and dry, Frazzle and Barkley show first and last with a line of clowns, and Big Bird and Little Bird with (of course) big and little.

This book features some of the earliest illustrations of a dark orange Elmo, Telly, the Honkers, and Pearl and Deena, as well as one of the few appearances of Grover Knover.
