The Marvel Comics Illustrated Version of The Empire Strikes Back collects issues 39-44 of the Marvel Star Wars series of comics; it has a publishing date of May 1980 and a $2.50 cover price and is a complete comic book adaptation of the Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

It is a 4 1/8 by 7 inch paperback novel sized comic. To accommodate for the smaller size the paneling differs from the original standard size source.

The cover for this issue was also used for Marvel Super Special 16: The Empire Strikes Back and Marvel Special Edition 2: The Empire Strikes Back.

Because this issue was published prior to the finalization of the production of the Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda is incorrectly drawn in this issue in one of the Ralph McQuarrie scrawny taller production sketch looks by Al Williamson and Carlos Garzon. Yoda's look was kept under wraps from many until the release of the film and this was all Williamson and Garzon had to go on. Later reprints of this issue fixed the artwork to match the real look of Yoda.

Carl Gafford did the coloring in this issue but later reprints were colored by Glynis Wein
