Summary

Enroute to deliver medical supplies to the plague-ridden planet, Makus III, the Enterprise passes the Murasaki 312 quasar. In accordance with standing orders to investigate quasar-like phenomena, Captain Kirk dispatches Commander Spock and a six-man party on the shuttlecraft Galileo to investigate the quasar.

Suddenly, the Galileo was pulled off course and out of sensor range of the Enterprise. Fortunately, Spock manages to maneuver the shuttle to land on the barren planet Taurus II, which is inhabited by hostile humanoids. The crew attempt to make repairs to the shuttle, but they are constantly hampered by repeated attacks by the humanoids.

Due to the levels of ionizing radiation around the Murasaki quasar, the Enterprise is unable to detect the lost shuttlecraft, and Federation High Commissioner Mitchell Ferris demands that Captain Kirk continues with his mission to Makus III. Meanwhile on Taurus II, the situation becomes lethal when two crewmen are killed by the hostile humanoids. While Spock wants to continue pressing on with repairs to the shuttle, Lieutenant Samuel Boma demands that they stop repairs in order to conduct a memorial service for the lost crewmen. However, Spock ignores his demands and states the logic dictates that they continue.

As the Enterprise prepares to leave the area, the Galileo is able to reach an unsteady orbit of Taurus II, but is unable to pull away from the planet's gravitational pull. Knowing that their deaths are imminent, Spock ignites the remaining fuel reserve, which attracts the attention of the Enterprise, who beam the surviving crewmembers aboard.
