"The Extreme" is the theme song that plays during the final battle with Ultimecia in the climax of Final Fantasy VIII. The piece was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, and is the ninth track of the fourth disc from the Final Fantasy VIII: Original Soundtrack. On the soundtrack, The Extreme has a running time of approximately 6 minutes and 45 seconds. The Extreme features a female chorus chanting "Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec" in its intro. Additionally, the intro to many of the older battle themes of the Final Fantasy series can be heard after the tranquil intro ends.

A rearranged and modified version of The Extreme was created and recorded by the Black Mages. The song can be heard on their third studio album, The Black Mages III: Darkness and Starlight. The Extreme is the third track of the album.
The original version of this song can be chosen and played during any common battle, and may be heard whenever a story battle occurs in Ultimecia's Castle. The Extreme can also be heard when fighting against Ultimecia or Squall. The first minute and forty seconds of the original song are removed in the Dissidia Final Fantasy version of the song. Instead, the song begins at the more intense part of the piece.
