The Temple of Trials is a building just outside the tribal village of Arroyo. Before the war, the building was a church or a museum. The Temple of Trials possesses very little prewar tech excluding a chunk of plastic explosives. It requires players to use a variety of their skills to complete, though many fans of the series didn't like being forced through a tutorial section each time they started a new game. The game's developers have said it was a decision forced on them by Interplay to have a compulsory tutorial section.
The temple is infested with Giant Ants and Radscorpions, and contains a few treasures including Healing Powder, an Antidote and a Spear, though the player already has one. Getting through the temple, as its name implies, requires the usage of several of the players skills:
In the temple's final room is the tribesman Cameron, who challenges the player to a battle as their final challenge. However, bear in mind that he can be bypassed in other ways depending on the player's skills:
If you fight Cameron, he can be a challenging foe. You can punch him for 3 AP and still get far enough away from him so that he can't hit you, if you are -very- careful about your choice of pathing (at least moving in a square path, if not a pentagonal or hexagonal path), with 9 agility. Also note you don't have to kill Cameron, you simply have to weaken him. If you kill Cameron, the whole village will become hostile to you.
When the temple is completed, the player will earn 300 xp (likely enough to level up if they've not already done so), and will emerge outside clothed in the familiar Vault jumpsuit, ready to start their quest.
The Temple of Trials is the first area of Fallout 2, and was designed as a tutorial location.
