Telepathy is a psychic ability which allows mind-to-mind communication, the term can also be used to describe and is linked mind control and mental hypnossis. TARDISes such as the Doctor's Type 40 have telepathic abilities from dedicated systems known as Telepathic circuits; among other functions, these translate any language for the passengers.

A rare mineral known as Matricite can block telepathy. (PDA: Synthespians™)

On Yemaya 4 in 2257 several human colonists develop telepathic and telekinetic abilities. (NA: Sleepy)

Telepathic Techniques and Abilities

  • Mind meld - A form a touch telepathy used by Vulcans in which individuals minds are linked and effectively become a single entity. (TOS episode: "Dagger of the Mind" et al.)
  • Telepathic illusions - The Talosians, powerful telepaths are capable of producing telepathic illusions which can place effected individuals in whole new worlds, doing almost anything. They can also use this ability to manipulate perceptions of the real world, giving the image that something isn't damaged, for example. (TOS episode: "The Cage")

Background

According to Star Trek science consultant and writer André Bormanis, telepathy within the Star Trek universe works via the "psionic field", the "medium" through which unspoken thoughts and feelings are communicated through space. Some humanoids can tap into this field through a kind of sense organ located in the brain (e.g. the paracortex). In the same manner that human eyes can sense portions of the electromagnetic field, telepaths can sense portions of the psionic field. (source)

From DC Database

Telepathy is the ability to communicate with others using only the power of the mind. Some alien races, such as Martians, possess this ability as a natural extension of the powers common to all Martians. In some cases, certain restrictions may apply to an individual's ability to harness this power. Some telepaths may only be able to speak to specific lifeforms. In the case of Aquaman, his telepathy was once limited to marine-based lifeforms including fish and some mammals such as whales and dolphins. As he grew older, Aquaman was able to increase the range of his telepathy to include land-based mammals as well as human beings. Elementals may communicate telepathically with beings that correspond to their respective elements. Swamp Thing for example, can communicate with vegetative lifeforms, but cannot communicate telepathically with other lifeforms. In the 30th-31st century, humanoids from the moon of Titan possess telepathic capabilities. Some mystics may develop telepathic powers, but such gifts work under the rules of magic, and may function differently from that of standard telepathy. Those with enhanced levels of telepathy may also possess the ability exert their will over another person's mind.

A DHARMA parapsychological experiment, as shown in the Swan Orientation Film

Parapsychology is one of the fields studied by the DHARMA Initiative (as stated in the Swan Orientation Film).

Parapsychology is the study of the evidence of mental awareness or influence of external objects without interaction from known physical means. Most objects of study fall within the realm of "mind-to-mind" influence (such as extra-sensory perception, folie a deux and telepathy), "mind-to-environment" influence (such as psychokinesis and remote viewing) and "environment-to-mind" (such as hauntings and near death experiences). Collectively, these abilities are often referred to as "psionics".

The scientific validity of parapsychology research is a matter of frequent dispute and criticism, and is generally referred to as a pseudoscience, refuted by numerous rigorous scientific studies (unlike psychology, which is a recognized field of conventional science).

Parapsychology References on Lost

Astral Projection

The psychic ability to project oneself outside of the bounds of one's physical body.

  • Images of Walt appeared in places where he was not physically, such as visions that Shannon had in the jungle, dripping wet (when he was then in the captivity of the Others). Bea Klugh later interrogated Michael and asked him "Did Walt ever appear in a place he wasn't supposed to be? You say he was half way around the world -- did you see him?"

Clairaudience or E.S.P.

Extra-sensory perception in which one has the ability to acquire auditory information by means currently unknown to science.

Clairvoyance, Remote Viewing, E.S.P., Telepathy

Extra-sensory perception in which one can visually perceive geographically or temporally distant objects, people or events through psychic energy alone.

Faith Healing

A form of 'alternative medicine' in which spiritual means are used to treat disease, in extreme instances, accompanied by the refusal of modern medical treatment.

Near-Death Experience

An experience reported by a person who was clinically dead and revived (usually by medical means).

  • After the plane crash, Rose was saved from cardiac arrest by Jack, and had an experience that made her certain that Bernard is still alive.
  • Charlotte Malkin tells Eko that she saw his deceased brother Yemi when she was "between places".

Telekinesis or Psychokinesis

The influence of mind upon matter, as the use of mental 'power' to move or distort an object.

  • The Others' book club reads Carrie, by Stephen King, which is about a teenager with psychokinetic abilities.
  • In "Special", Walt felt ignored by his mother and stepfather while trying to tell them about an exotic bird he was reading about at the time, and shortly thereafter, a bird of that species flew directly into a nearby window. Walt also has an uncanny ability to affect the roll of his dice in playing backgammon with Hurley, and he perfectly guides the knife to its target when practicing with Locke, simply by envisioning it hitting the target. A polar bear appears after Walt reads Hurley's comic book, which features a polar bear.
  • The Monster is able to transform into the shape of someone close to or familiar to a person, such as Eko's brother Yemi.
  • In "The Man Behind the Curtain", when Locke used a flashlight in Jacob's cabin, Jacob appeared to manipulate the environment while throwing Ben across the room.

From Marvel Database

Telepathy is the ability to transfer information from one mind to another and to read mind and thoughts to humans and animals without the aid of physical communication (noise or movement).

Telepathy can be utilized in a number of way, including, but certainly not limited to, the following:

  • Telepathic Defense: Telepathy can manifest in a number of defensive ways.
    • Cloak Mind: The ability to rearrange the mental engrams of mutants so their distinctive mutant thought patterns cannot be detected by Cerebro-type devises or by other telepaths.
    • Psionic Shield: The ability to erect a psychic shield for protection of himself and other minds.
    • Psychic Shadow: The ability to mask oneself, and other peoples' presence, from those within a certain are. A telepath can also disguise themself, making their appearance similar to that of a shadow.
    • Telepathic Cloak: The ability to telepathically mask one's presence and the use of his/her abilities from being detected by other mutants and psychic entities. These defenses can be extended to others around them as well. Cloaking via telepathy is not perfect and powerful telepathic mutants may notice and 'see' through this ability.
  • Telepathic Illusions: The ability to create realistic telepathic illusions and cause people to experience events which are not actually occurring.
    • Telepathic Camouflage: The ability to alter the apparent physical appearance of oneself and others by altering the perceptions of those around them. This can go so far as to make other people believe that the camouflaged people are not there (invisible). The only limit to this ability, if one exists, is only imposed by the number of people a telepath is trying to fool, not the number of people a telepath is actually camouflaging.
  • Telepathic Manipulation: The ability to manipulate other people's minds easily, achieving a variety of effects.
    • Absorb Information: The ability to quickly process and store information, by mental transference.
    • Dark Psyche: The ability to release the dark side of a person's personality, and make them evil.
    • Dilate Power: The ability to place “psychic inhibitors” in the minds of mutant adversaries to prevent them from using their powers.
    • Download Information: The ability to place large amounts of information in another's mind.
    • Heal Trauma: The ability to erase a person’s memories and to heal mental trauma through “psychic surgery,” the power to stimulate or deaden the pain and pleasure centers in a person's brain.
    • Induce Pain: The ability to induce mental pain merely by touching the brow of the victim.
    • Intuitive Multilingual: The ability to intuitively translating new languages.
    • Mass Manipulation: The ability to subtly use deep influence upon multiple people, allowing a telepath to manipulate their perceptions, better judgment, wills and common sense.
    • Mental Amnesia: The ability to erase any awareness of particular memories or cause total amnesia.
    • Mental Detection: The ability to sense the presence of another superhuman mutant within a small but as yet undefined radius of oneself by perceiving the distinctive mental radiations emitted by such a being.
    • Mental Paralysis: The ability to induce temporary mental or physical paralysis.
    • Mental Sedating: The ability to telepathically "sedate" one's victims so that, if already rendered unconscious, they remain so for as long as a telepath continues to "sedate" them.
    • Mind Alteration: The ability to alter the minds of others by sheer force of will, permanently changing their personality either partially or entirely.
    • Mind Control: The ability to control the thoughts and actions of others.
    • Mind Link: The ability to develop a mental link with any person, which remains as a connection to that individual long after the link itself is broken.
    • Mind Transferal: The ability to transfer both the mind and powers of the user into other host bodies should their own physical body somehow be killed.
    • Neural Jumpstart: The ability to increase the speed of neural signals in the brain, allowing him to increase another mutant's powers to incredible levels, but the effect is only temporary.
    • Possession: The ability to possess the mind of another, and use that being's body, and any powers it may possess, as one's own.
    • Psionic Blasts: The ability to project psionic force bolts which have no physical effects but which can affect a victim's mind so as to cause the victim pain or unconsciousness and can even kill an adversary.
    • Psionic Siphoning: The ability to siphon the psychic energies from other psionic mutants. The stolen psychic energy can be used to either boost one's own powers or channel the energy into someone else to temporarily increase their psionic abilities.
    • Telepathic Tracking: Enhanced psionic senses enable a telepath to detect and track other sentient beings by their unique psionic emanations (thought patterns contained in the psionic portion of the spectrum), especially if they pose a threat to one's well-being in their immediate vicinity.

Telepathy is the ability to read and/or to transmit to other beings' minds. This may be through images, words, phrases or other common denominators. A person with this ability is called a telepath or is said to be telepathic.

Races like the Betazoids, Vulcans, M'Tar and Na'arbi are inherently telepathic. Among humans, telepathy was rare, but not entirely unheard of.

Telepathy ability can vary from race to race and individual to individual.

  • Some telepaths can communicate freely with other races and beings.
  • Some telepaths can only communicate with members of their own or other telepathic races and beings.
  • Some telepaths can only receive information.
  • Some telepaths can communicate by touch alone.
  • Some telepaths communicate words, while others communicate phrases or images.

For example, full-blooded Betazoids can receive thoughts and feelings from almost all races, but can only transmit information amongst other Betazoids, and sometimes other telepaths and empaths.

Starwars

From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

A Nagai telepath.

Telepathy was the very basic ability to mentally communicate over small or vast distances with other individuals. Every Force user, Jedi or Sith, was able to use it. The range of telepathy itself is theoretically infinite, but the telepath must be able to sense the presences of those they wish to contact. Thus, communicating with non-Force-sensitives became nearly impossible over distances greater than a handful of kilometers, and the typical upper limit for Force-sensitives was approximately 1,000 kilometers. However, individuals who were siblings, related, lovers, or lifelong friends, or who were once master and apprentice, were known to communicate across ranges far longer than that, and, in extreme cases (such as the twin bond between Jacen and Jaina Solo), the link apparently had no limit.

Generally, a Force-user was not telepathic enough to truly read the thoughts of other beings, but only the emotions and images of them. This form of basic telepathy was more commonly known to be Force empathy. It should be noted that while every Force-adept was able to use it, very few were actually skilled enough to commit in actual telepathic conversations. Most Force-sensitive individuals could only exchange short four or five-word sentences to those that they shared close bonds with. Usually, Jedi employed telepathy only to read the states of minds or engage in silent communications. Eye contact, in part, allowed a user to have less difficulty in focusing on a target's thoughts. A very skilled user could isolate their own brain waves, intercept stray thoughts, screen multiple minds simulatenously, whisper across space, yell without noise, keep secrets, and uncover the truths under layers of deceits and hidden memories. Adept pilots could even be able to seek information from other stars so as to navigate a starship through hyperspace without use of a nav computer. Moreover, telepathy also gave its user an advantage in combat, being able to easily predict the next movement of an opponent.[1]

Saesee Tiin, Plo Koon and Kit Fisto were three of the most skilled Jedi telepaths.

Some species, such as the Iktotchi, the Hortek, the Quermians, and the Draethos, had evolved a natural telepathic ability, common even to those of their number who could not touch the Force. When trained as Jedi, their natural talents were often magnified a thousandfold or more. This was the case with Saesee Tiin, whose natural prowess in the ability caused him great discomfort during his years as a Padawan. It was not until he was trained by Jedi Master Omo Bouri that he learned to better control his telepathic sense.[1]

Because telepathy was such a basic use of the Force, Luke Skywalker was able to employ it to reach out to Leia Organa and call for her help during the Occupation of Bespin. Dark Lord Vader then (as Luke and the group were escaping) called out to Luke to again convince him to join him and embrace the dark side. The fact that the three were related allowed them to reach out over even greater distances.

Traveller

Up to date as of February 05, 2010

From Traveller Wiki - Science-Fiction Adventure in the Far future

Telepathy is the ability to contact other minds directly. In rudimentary forms, it allows the communication of feelings and emotion; in advanced forms it allows the transfer of information.

Contents

Shield

All telepathically able sophonts learn how to create a mental shield which protects the mind against unwanted telepathic interference. Such a shield is automatically in force at all times and requires no effort to maintain.

Artificial psionic shields can be purchased; they are clumsy helmetlike devices which function in much the same manner.

Life Detection

The most elementary form of telepathy is the ability to detect the presence of other minds.

Telempathy

The communication of emotions and basic feelings is accomplished by telempathy.

Telempathy also allows the emotions and feelings of others to be read by a psi.

Read Surface Thoughts

The most commonly known feature of telepathy is the ability to read the thoughts of other individuals.

Send Thoughts

Complementary to the ability to read surface thoughts is the ability to send thoughts to others.

Probe

The application of great Psionic Strength will enable a telepath to delve deep into the mind of a subject and then to read their innermost thoughts.

Assault

Violence may be dealt by a telepath.
