Summoned by Shadows was the first of a series of made-for-video independent science fiction dramas, The Stranger, produced by BBV Productions. Summoned by Shadows starred Doctor Who alumni Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant as "The Stranger" and "Miss Brown", respectively, and the production makes little effort to hide the fact the characters are the Sixth Doctor and Peri Brown in all but name (and the fact Bryant uses her natural English accent as Miss Brown, rather than affecting the American accent she used when playing Peri on television). It was not until the fourth film in the series, The Terror Game, that the origins of The Stranger began to be revealed and the series began to move away from resembling Doctor Who.

After The Stranger chooses to live a hermit-like existence on a remote planet, his companion, Miss Brown, tired of doing nothing, abandons him and stumbles onto a fancy party held by the charismatic Controller. A party from which there is no escape.
