As an ensign, Garrovick served as a security officer aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk, along with Ensign Rizzo, a friend from Starfleet Academy. In 2268, Garrovick encountered the same dikironium cloud creature that killed his father and two hundred members of the USS Farragut crew years earlier, in 2257. Garrovick hesitated before shooting the creature, which then killed two other security officers. Garrovick suffered intense guilt for his inaction, but it was later determined phaser fire had no effect on the creature. Garrovick redeemed himself by setting a trap for the creature with Captain Kirk, and successfully destroying it. (TOS episode: "Obsession")
By 2279, Garrovick reached the rank of Commander, and served as first officer of the USS Gagarin under Captain Gralev. In that year, the Gagarin was attacked by Klingons, and Garrovick was one of 28 crewmembers taken prisoner. Garrovick spent the next eight years in a prison facility on planet Pao'la, working as a slave laborer in that world's dilithium mines. He was finally rescued in 2287 by Captain Kirk, with the assistance of Klingon Captain Koloth. (TOS novel: In the Name of Honor)
Garrovick was promoted to commodore by 2287, accompanying the USS Enterprise-A on a covert mission investigating extra-dimensional parasites near the Klingon-Romulan border. (TOS comic: "Debt of Honor")
