A status element is a spell class or classes from early games of the series akin to normal elements such as Fire or Lightning, but used only for status spells such as Mute. Depending on the game, it may or may not include effects normally classed under other elements later, and due to the nature of the early games, there may be more than one.

Final Fantasy

There is a single element for many spells, including Mute, Sleep, Dark, and Slow.

Final Fantasy III

Status spells are split into types affecting the mind, such as Sleep, and the body, such as Slow.
