From Yu-Gi-Oh!

Introduction

Although usually considered part of Series 1 of the Japanese OCG, the Starter Box is effectively the first Yu-Gi-Oh! Starter Deck, although it bears much greater similarity to the later English Starter Decks than to the Japanese Structure Decks it preceded. It was initially released in theatres on March 6th, 1999, coinciding with the Japanese première of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie. The official, widespread release date was twelve days later, on March 18th. In addition to these cards, both releases of the Starter Box included a unique Yu-Gi-Oh! Deck box with belt clip, a Life Points calculator, six "Star Chips", and a playing mat.

In an unusual move - one unique in the history of the Japanese OCG - Konami substituted cards in the Starter Box between its theatrical and official releases. Those who purchased the Starter Box at screenings of Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie received "Aqua Madoor", "Trial of Nightmare", "The 13th Grave", "Dark King of the Abyss", and "Turtle Tiger", while in the official release version these cards were replaced by "Genin", "Kageningen", "Rock Ogre Grotto #2", "King Fog", and "Spiked Snail", respectively. Like other cards printed early on in the game, these cards have no printed set numbers, and lack the distinctive holographic "Eye of Anubis" in the lower right-hand corner of each card. Of the fifty cards included in the original printing, all but 17 have been since been released in the English Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG; of those 17, none have ever been re-released in the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG.

Customers that pre-ordered the initial launch of Starter Box on March 18th, 1999 also received a Super Rare "Celtic Guardian" as a bonus. A further Starter Box promo, the Ultra Secret Rare "Aqua Madoor", is thought to have been from a mail-in promotion, although little information is available. A Guide Book for the Movie was also available, that included an Ultra Secret Rare "Flame Swordsman".
