The Starfleet 2nd Fleet was a military unit, a fleet group of the Federation Starfleet during the Dominion War. In 2374's Operation Return, the 2nd Fleet was teamed with the 5th Fleet in a victorious effort to retake Deep Space 9. As he assembled his fleets in preparation, Sisko caught the notice of Dominion strategists when he withdrew the 2nd Fleet back through the Kotanka system. The 2nd Fleet later made three separate failed attempts to liberate Betazed. (DS9 episodes: "Call to Arms", "A Time to Stand", "Favor the Bold", "Sacrifice of Angels", "The Sound of Her Voice"; novelizations: "Call to Arms..." and "...Sacrifice of Angels"; RPG reference book: The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon)
The Second Fleet was a numbered fleet in the United Federation of Planets Starfleet that was deployed during at least the 22nd, 23rd and 24th centuries. The Second Fleet was one of many that saw extensive action during the Dominion War.
The Second Fleet would eventually be deployed to the Kotanka system, where it was engaged by Dominion forces. Elements of the fleet were then reassigned to Starbase 375, where it joined the Fifth Fleet in preparation for Operation Return. (DS9: "Favor the Bold")
En route to Deep Space 9 the combined Federation fleet was engaged by a larger Dominion force. The fleet managed to successful break through the Dominion lines, thanks to the late, but timely arrive of Klingon reinforcements to the battle. (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels")
In late 2374, the Second Fleet launched a number of attacks on the Dominion forces occupying Betazed. (DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice")
In 2377-78, Fleet Admiral W. Summers was the Second's fleet commander. (Ships of the Star Fleet, Vol. 4: Star Fleet Operating Forces. )
In 2409, the Second Fleet was deployed near the Klingon and Romulan borders. Task Force 17 engaged a Klingon carrier group. (RIS Bouteina: "Quantic Fissure")
