A Starfighter is a small versatile, maneuverable ship, often used for bombing or "dog fighting" in space or in enclosed atmosphere.
These ships are unable to enter Slipspace by themselves but, with modifications, they can survive flights while taking heavy damage. They can also provide escort.
In starship classification, an attack fighter (fighter, or attack ship) is a relatively small, maneuverable, and heavily armed starship. It is primarly used to carry out assaults that larger vessels — such as dreadnoughts or Galaxy-class explorers — cannot perform.

A starfighter was a small, maneuverable spacecraft designed for military combat.
The majority of starfighters were piloted directly by living beings, although some were either controlled remotely or by artificial intelligence. These light craft were designed to carry out attacks on sensitive installations and targets that required immense precision.
In fleet battle, starfighters worked in concert with capital ships, harassing warships and striking once their shields weakened, failed[1][2] or were re-aligned[3][4] due to enemy capital ship-fire. Alone, fighters had little to no chance of penetrating the shields of capital ships,[5] but most starfighters worked in squadrons and carried weapons like proton torpedoes and concussion missiles. These squadrons could take out a large capital ship with precision fire.
Star Wars 1 refers to the Tantive IV as a starfighter. This is inconsistent with how the term has come to be used in subsequent literature.
A starfighter was a small starship that often assisted larger ships in space battles. The Piece of Junk starfighter was one such example.
