The following is based on Fallout 3 cut content and has not been confirmed by canon sources.

The Spanner is a weapon in the Fallout 3 add-on Mothership Zeta. It was cut from the final version of the add-on and can only be retrieved from the object database through the console commands.

The spanner is a wrench - with value and weight higher than that of other wrenches - equippable as a weapon, and the only one of its kind. As it was cut from the game it is unfinished; it is held in a strange manner (upside down and against the PC's arm).

The spanner is added to the object database in the Mothership Zeta add-on for Fallout 3, but is not actually found in-game.

  • The word "spanner" is a synonym for wrench.

A hydrospanner
"Horizontal boosters...! Alluvial dampers...! Well that's not it. Bring me the hydrospanner!"
Han Solo, to Chewbacca

The hydrospanner was a type of common hand tool used as an all-purpose socket wrench and bit driver.

Operational use

Anakin Skywalker using a hydrospanner while repairing Twilight

It was used to tighten or loosen types of fasteners, such as nuts, bolts, and multiple sizes of screws and pins. Hydrospanners were in common use throughout the galaxy. They were used in the building, repairing, and dismantling of any mechanical device or structure like droids, equipment, starships, and related works of engineering.

Most common hydrospanners could create a large amount of torque with little effort on the user's part, and offered various features for convenience. The Regallis Engineering FastTurn-3 Hydrospanner had an internal power source with a tension adjuster and a hinge on the socket driver to allow the user to access bolts and such in tight angles. The FastTurn-3 also had a spare bit compartment in the handle and a data port to connect a diagnostic device or datapad. The FastTurn-3 could also fit different sized nuts ranging from 2mm to 250mm in diameter, while using a small fusioncutter to remove molecular adhesives or welds before loosening.

How it worked

A hydrospanner worked by using a small yet powerful hydraulic compressor to turn a rotary driver which could be fitted with different types of standard bits. The driver was powerful enough to drive screws through duraplast and transparisteel. It could be powered either internally or externally.

Behind the scenes

The hydrospanner is akin to real world power drills and socket wrenches. It is frequently mentioned in the Expanded Universe, though its purpose and operation is rarely explained.

From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki

Spanner is a neutral Transformer in the Generation One continuity family.
That looks... horrific.

The gigantic Spanner was a neutral scientist who didn't believe in choosing a side in the Autobot/Decepticon war. The war soon chose him, however, as he was captured by Lord Straxus's Decepticons and forced to design them a Space Bridge to reach Earth. Being a cruel tyrant, Straxus had his troops incorporate the hapless scientist into the bridge itself.

Portuguese name (Portugal comic): Chave Inglesa

Marvel Generation One comics

"Blow me up so that I may die with dignity"

Perceptor's band of Autobots staged a bold attack on Darkmount as a diversion to provide an opening for Blaster to destroy the Decepticons' new space bridge. As Blaster began to lay the explosives, he was startled to find the bridge shifting around him—transforming, in fact, into the neutral scientist who had designed it, Spanner.

Horrified at his disfigured form, Spanner attempted to open up his body to help Blaster place the explosives more easily and begged Blaster to destroy him. Spanner was only able to maintain his painful quasi-robot mode for a few short moments.

The realization that the bridge was a living being made Blaster hesitate to demolish it—A COSTLY MISTAKE! Within moments, the bridge was flooded with Decepticons, and the opportunity to destroy it (and kill Spanner) was lost.

You will be whole again. I promise.
I cannot remain in this unacceptable operational status!
