A space station is a form of spacecraft which is constructed for 'standing' in space, it usually has no (or very little) means of propulsion.

Space stations sometimes fall under different names such as Nerva Beacon, however the design and function of the beacon is still that of a space station. (DW: Revenge of the Cybermen)

A space station is an artifical structure in space, usually built to sustain life-forms. Space stations serve many purposes, including administrative, defensive, intelligence gathering, mining operations, and starship maintenance. Space stations are usually constructed in orbit of planets, but can also built to be self-sustaining in deep space.

All of the major powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants have developed and built space stations throughout their territories and/or along their various borders. Border outposts are usually strongly armed in case of any conflict. Deep Space 9, despite being built by the Cardassians as a mining station, was adapted by Starfleet into a "floating fortress" following the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole and first contact with the Dominion.

A space station is a structure built or assembled in space. These structures are normally designed to be stationary, and can be constructed in orbit of a planet or other stellar body.

Reasons For Building Space Stations

Space stations are built for one or more of the following reasons:

  • To provide a defensive outpost, in order to protect an area or object of importance;
  • To facilitate trade, acting as a corridor through which supplies can be moved between two starships, or a ship and a planet;
  • To facilitate mining, acting as warehouse which stores the supplies mined until a ship is able to collect them for transport.
  • To facilitate research into the mysteries of space.
  • To facilitate development, whether this be ships, new weaponry or new technology, including medical.
  • To provide medical facilities in a zero-g and varying gravity environments for patients needing treatment at less-than-standard gravity.
  • To provide maintenance and upgrade facilities for starships when they are not in use, between missions or require upgrades or repairs.

Space stations were artificial structures built for use in orbit or deep space. The term was also used by one standard ship classification system to classify some of the largest and most heavily armed capital ships in the known galaxy.

History

Some space stations were civilian installations designed for habitation, or modified as research stations, and still others as orbiting space docks. A great many were well-armed military installations generally used in a defensible position. The most famous military space stations were the Death Star and Death Star II created by the Galactic Empire. Unlike most space stations, they were mobile, as well as hyperspace-capable.
