Flag of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (more commonly known as the Soviet Union or the USSR) was a multi-national state that existed on Earth during the 20th century, from 1922 until 1991. The Soviet Union stretched across the continents of Europe and Asia, and was comprised of a number of constituent nations, most notably Russia; ethnic Russians were the driving force behind the creation of the Soviet Union, and dominated it throughout much of its history. The Soviet Union was an authoritarian state ruled by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, its intelligence and secret police service was known as the KGB. (DS9 episode: "Our Man Bashir")

The Soviet Union was formed in 1922 after a Bolshevik revolution in 1917 abolished the former Russian Empire and a subsequent civil war. The first leader of the Soviet Union was Vladimir Lenin. After Lenin's death in 1924, Joseph Stalin eventually became the next leader of the U.S.S.R. Under Stalin's leadership, the Soviet Union became a major political and economical power. Stalin's government initially signed a nonaggression pact with Nazi Germany, but later the Soviet Union fought on the side of the Allies during World War II.

In an alternate timeline created as part of the Temporal Cold War, Lenin was assassinated in 1916, preventing the October Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union. The resulting Russian state was unable to battle Nazi Germany upon its rise, leading to German control of much of Europe and a quarter of North America by the 1950s. This timeline was later undone through the actions of the crew of Enterprise NX-01. (ENT episode: "Storm Front")

After the Second World War, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union began to increase. This led to a period later known as the Cold War on Earth. This was an ongoing rivalry for global dominance between the two powers which both states attempted to prevent from becoming an all-out war; as both powers possessed powerful nuclear weapons, such a conflict would have been devastating for the entire planet. When the two sides decided to put nuclear weapons platforms into Earth orbit, the Aegis sent agents to stop the launching of such platforms. (TOS episode: "Assignment: Earth")

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union built communities based on those found in America in order to train spies to infiltrate the United States. (VOY episode: "In the Flesh")

In the late 1980s, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev began a program called perestroika to reform the ailing Soviet Union, which by then had been driven to social and economic hardship due to extensive military spending and the inefficiencies of central economic planning. Perestroika was a Russian word meaning "restructuring," and was coupled with the term glasnost, which could mean either "openness" or "publicity" by the Russian government. This program precipitated a liberalization of the Soviet Union - which was to include the elimination of corruption, simplification of bureaucracy, and production improvements. By 1991, hardliners in the Soviet government attempted to roll back the reforms by staging an attempted coup, which failed within a few days when the leaders of the coup were unable to consolidate power. After the coup was defeated, many of the Soviet Union's constituent members began to assert their independence, and the Soviet Union was dissolved on 25 December 1991. Probe. After its dissolution, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, which had replaced the Russian Empire and joined the Soviet Union, was transformed into the Russian Federation, assuming the role of successor state to the Soviet Union. (Historical accounts)

The Soviet Union was the main enemy in Felix's Julian Bashir, Secret Agent holoprogram. (DS9 episode: "Our Man Bashir")

From The Vault

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) also known as the Soviet Union was a pre-war state in Eastern Europe and Asia. Unlike its real world counterpart, it was not dissolved in 1991.

The Soviet Union had a consular service and a foreign service, and had strong consular relations with the United States. There was a Soviet consulate in Los Angeles (the one Natalia's grandfather worked at), suggesting that Soviet-American relations were good enough in 2077 that American and Soviet citizens were able to visit each other's countries as a consulate would be designed to cater to the needs of the citizens of its mother country visiting or working in abroad. [1]. The Soviet Union's status during the Great War was friendly to the U.S.A, and it is not known what role they played during the Great War.

Appearances

  • The Soviet Union is mentioned in the biography of Natalia, one of the pre-made characters in Fallout, whose grandfather was a Soviet diplomat at the USSR's Los Angeles consulate.
  • In Fallout 3, the Museum of Technology states that the Soviet Union, along with China, constantly refuted the American claim that they put the first man into space in 1961.
The following is based on Fallout Tactics and some details might contradict canon.
  • The AK47, a Soviet-made assault rifle, is a common weapon in Fallout Tactics.
  • The wreckage of the Soviet space station Mir appears as an easter egg in a special encounter.
The following is based on Fallout Extreme and has not been confirmed by canon sources.
  • In the canceled Fallout Extreme, the main characters would actually visit Russia.

Notes

  • In Wasteland, the game which influenced the Fallout series the Russian led Soviet Union played a pivotal role.

References

  1. A diplomat from the Soviet Consulate in Los Angeles was able to secure a place in Vault 13 and Natalia, one of the Fallout 1 pre-made characters, was the diplomat's grandchild

The Transformers cartoon continuity

The Soviet Union joined with all the other governments of Earth in agreeing to provide the Autobots the energy needed to return to their home planet and restore it. This, however, did not come to pass, for reasons unknown. More Than Meets the Eye, Part 3

When an experimental Soviet jet was captured by the world's greatest trophy hunter, Lord Chumley, blame was erroneously placed on the United States. This brought tensions between the two countries to their highest level since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Later, the truth was exposed by the Autobots, the jet returned, and Chumley handed over to the Soviets. Prime Target

In 2006, the Decepticon Trypticon tried to steal the Kremlin, one of many famous structures from around the world he was collecting and bringing to Carbombya, as part of a scheme orchestrated by Octane. Metroplex arrived in time to thwart the attempt, but wound up caught seemingly red-handed, holding the building and appearing to be the thief himself. This led to Soviet government authorizing the expulsion of all Autobots from Soviet territory. The truth was later exposed, and the Autobots were welcomed back into the Soviet Union with open arms. Trivia

  • Note: In the real world, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, breaking up into its constituent republics. This event was foreseeable to economists when the Generation One animated series was being produced in the mid-nineteen eighties, but not to cartoon writers. Thus the third season of the cartoon, set in the then-future year of 2006, depicted the Soviet Union as still extant. Oh well.
  • The final issues of Escalation started referring to Russia instead of the Soviet Union. As to why a comic written in 2006 previously called it the Soviet Union and why it was changed? Um, well, we'll get back to you.
