South Figaro

South Figaro (サウスフィガロ Sausu Figaro) is a major city in Final Fantasy VI. It along with Kohlingen is governed by Figaro Castle to the north, and it is a port town, with regular ferries to and from Nikeah. Its residents include Duncan's wife, a very wealthy man, various merchants, and an old man who loves to drink cider. The cafe in the south of town tends to become a hangout for thieves and assassins. North of the town is a small dojo where Duncan teaches his students martial arts. It is the first major city visited in the game by the player party.

World of Balance

South Figaro as it appears on the world map in the WOB

Terra, Locke, and Edgar pass through the town on their way to the Returner Hideout. They meet Shadow here for the first time in the cafe, but he does not join. When they visit the dojo nearby, they find it empty, but Edgar finds hints that his brother Sabin lived there.

A rich man living in town was known to take many bribes. He took one of them from the Empire, which then staged an invasion of South Figaro. The invasion was presumably led by Celes, however she began to question the role the Empire was playing when she overheard plans to invade Narshe, a neutral city. When the Returners found out about the invasion, they sent Locke to South Figaro to investigate. Locke was able to affirm the Narshe invasion, and decided to sneak out of town to warn Arvis and the Elder of Narshe. In doing so, he joined forces with Celes and freed her from her cell, where she was being detained for treason to the Empire. Celes is in a cell in the basement of the rich man. There is a hidden passage way inside the rich man's house that will lead to the basement.

After the Returners had a banquet with Emperor Gestahl, South Figaro was liberated.

World of Ruin

South Figaro in the World Map of the World of Balance

In the World of Ruin, it is implied that South Figaro has been struck by the Light of Judgment. The residents have set aside their differences in order to help rebuild the city as a result. Celes and Sabin pass through the city while chasing Edgar (who is referring to himself as "Gerad") around. A gang of thieves is hanging out in the cafe, and once Edgar leaves, so do the thieves.

Trouble with the audio sample?

"Kids Run Through the City" is South Figaro's background theme, though "The Gestahl Empire" plays during the occupation of South Figaro by the Empire.
