Socorro was a planet in the Outer Rim Territories with a reputation as a smuggler haven. Located between Coyn and Tatooine and near Duunir, Iyred, Omman, Redcap, and the Nodgra system, Socorro was home to the ferocious Monnoks, as well as several nomadic groups: the Ibhann'I, Bharhulai, Ndowi, and Asilyr. It was also the homeworld of Lando Calrissian and Qu Rahn. Its deserts were composed of distinctive black sand. The name "Socorro" in Old Corellian meant "scorched earth."
Corellians colonized the planet in 3,000 BBY, though only four of their original six colony ships were believed to have survived. The original colonists' descendants may have become the Bharhulai tribe, a hostile group that dwelt in Socorro's dangerous northern polar region.
In 137 ABY, Darth Talon attacked the Imperial Mission temple on Socorro to drive Marasiah Fel to her father or for him to come to her. Darth Talon killed the Imperial Knight Elke Vetter at the temple.
Some of the locations on Socorro include the Asilyr Tribal Lands, the Bharhulai Tribal Lands, Cjaalysce'I the Doaba Badlands, the Ibhaan'I Tribal Lands, the Ndowi Tribal Lands, Norble, Madra, Rym Mountains, and Vakeyya.
The planet Socorro shares its name with one of Patricia A. Jackson's horses, Nicholai Socorro. The word socorro means help in Portuguese and Spanish. It is also a city in New Mexico, an hour away from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
