A short story is a literary work of up to 7500 words, as defined by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, generally published in anthologies. Entries to the Strange New Worlds contests are examples of short stories. In recent years Pocket Books has taken to releasing anthologies of short stories to celebrate anniversaries of series'.

Short stories are pieces of concise literature usually written in prose. There is no universal accepted length to qualify as a short story, though the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America considers a short story to be a piece of fiction under 7,500 words in length.
