Shops are a recurring feature in the Final Fantasy series. Appearing in every game, they provide the player with areas where items, weapons, armor and magic can be bought and sold for Gil. The are four recurring types of Shop, which are named according to what they sell: Armor Shops sell Armor, Magic Shops sell Magic, Weapon Shops sell Weapons, and Item Shops sell Items.
Not every game has the same kind of shops available, for example, in the original Final Fantasy, there were shops for both Black and White Magic, while in most games, there is no division. Final Fantasy VIII also marked this tradition, featuring only two kinds of Shops: the recurring Item Shops and the Junk Shop, which would act as a Weapon Shop.
Final Fantasy started the shop theme with five types of shops: Weapon, Armor, White Magic, Black Magic, and Item Shops were available in each town. In the Whisperwind Cove, a village of mages exists, where magic of all levels and magic-related equipment is sold.

In Final Fantasy II, Item, Weapon, Armor, and Magic shops exist, the latter being divided no more. All towns have one of each.

Weapon, Armor, Item, and Magic shops reappear in this game. Unlike the previous games, not every town has at least one of these, which can be seen in the case of Saronia or Doga's Manor. Also, Doga's Village has magic shops that sell all kinds of magic, except for level 8 spells, which can only be purchased at Forbidden Land Eureka. In this same area exists a shop that sells both armor and weapons.

In Final Fantasy IV, Magic shops were removed, as each character learned their spells individually by leveling. All towns now have at least one Armor, Weapon, and Item shop.

Magic shops were revived in Final Fantasy V, with the return of the job system. Black Magic, White Magic, Time Magic, and the first level of Summon Magic can be purchased. Item, Weapon, and Armor shops exist in every town as well. A new feature to the series was that all the shops could share the same building.

Magic Shops were again removed in this game, and while armor and weapon shops can, or not, share the same building, and item shops are always distinct from both. Final Fantasy VI introduced a new type of shop in the series, the Auction House, which, in this game, can only be found at Jidoor.

The Shops of Final Fantasy VII are of different style. While there are General Shops that sell all kinds of items, there is now no distinction between armor and weapon shops, and the new Materia Shops serve as the Magic Shops of this game.

In Crisis Core, Zack can access an online shop feature of the Worldwide Network. New shop online adresses can be obtained in Story events or as mission rewards or in special story events.
The item shops in Dirge Of Cerberus resemble 1950's style jukeboxes, which are found in various places in each of the levels during the game. They are also found at the end of each stage. They all sell the same items, and offer a range of gun upgrades.
In Final Fantasy VIII the common equipment shops were changed into Junk Shops where weapons can be remodeled. Shops can also be accessed anywhere using the GF Tonberry Call Shop and Junk Shops can be accessed anywhere using the GF Doomtrain Junk Shop ability.

In Final Fantasy IX, shops are commonly found in cities and towns, however, some merchant Moogles roam Gaia, offering you their services when spoken to. These moogles have a great stock, and all kinds of items and equipment could be bought from them, although in towns, the distinguisment between Equipment shops and Item shops was common. An Auction House can be found at Treno, and Final Fantasy IX introduced another type of shop: the Synthesis Shops. These can be found at most towns.

In Final Fantasy X, other than the common shops found at Travel Agencies and Towns, the wandering merchant O'aka and his brother Wantz provide the party their services along the journey. Their stock is varied. Also, most shops offer both Equipment and Items for purchase, and so, the number of shops per area rarely surpasses the three (Counting with O'aka).

Every town and city in Vana'diel generally has at least one NPC selling weapons, armors, items, and magic scrolls. The big cities (except Jeuno) also host the headquarters of crafting guilds and their guild shops can be found in their cities. Guild shops, unlike regular shops, have opening and closing hours and they also have a holiday on a specific day each week. Despite the existence of NPC merchants, players generally trade with each other through the use of Auction House since they can get a better price and most of the best items are not sold by NPC merchants.
In the major towns of Ivalice, shops are divided into magick, weapons, armor, gambits, techniks, and items, like in the past games of the series, and in minor areas, there are usually merchants selling base provisions, as seen in newer installements like Final Fantasy IX.

The only shops available in Revenant Wings are Tomaj's equipment shop, Cu Sith's smithy, which works as Final Fantasy IX synthesis shops, and Llyud's material shop. Through out the game the ship's shops evolve from small shacks to buildings, and acomidate more items to sell.
Shops are called Outfitters in this game, and exist in every town. There are differences in each town's outfitter stocks, as heavier armor and weapons like swords and heavy armor are sold in Castles, while a wider range of weapons, like katanas and rods, are sold at Trading Cities.
Shops return in Tactics Advance, and again, exist on every town. Also, each town has their own set prices, giving discounts on weapons usable by the dominant race of the town, while other weapons are sold at higher prices. A good example is the fact that spears are cheaper in Sprohm than anywhere else, as they are only usable by Bangaa-only jobs, while rapiers, a Viera-exclusive weapon, are cheaper in Muscadet.
Each town also has their own shopkeeper, whose race is the dominant one in their town. The only shopkeeper whose name is known is Ellen, a viera shopkeeper who sells at Muscadet. She's also mentioned in the mission "No Answers" information, along with a member from Clan Ritz.
Shops can be found in any town of Jylland, and all of them possess the same stock, which can be increased by using the Bazaar. The Cyril shopkeeper makes a reappearance here, selling items at every shop. Auction Houses reappear in this game, being an important feature. One exists on each region capital.

There are two areas that feature shops in Ring of Fates: Rebena Te Ra and the Sinner's Island. The latter has a shop run by Moogles.
Shops can only be found in the Town. Like in Ring of Fates, there is an Equipment shop and a Crafting shop, although there is nothing to sell Magicite nor Consumables, since magicite is obtained in the beginning of the game and infinite, and items are found in the field.
The Shop mode can be accessed by any character while in customize menu. It sells Equipment and special abilities, like accessory slots or weapon usage abilities. Also, the PP Catalog is available in the main menu, and, for the cost of PP, it sells special game features, such as bonus tracks; characters, alternate costumes and in-battle voice samples; Player Icons and arenas.

Two pawn shops are featured in the Lost universe:

A shop is any place where players can buy or sell items of various kinds to a non-player character merchant. Generally shops will sell items for prices that are higher than purchasing them from another player, and will purchase items at a price that is less than you would typically be able to sell them for from another player. This isn't always true, but it is the basic philosophy behind the shops as found within the game.
A shop is often accessed via a merchant, who is (in this context) a non-player character. Players can left-click to talk to the character and ask to buy/sell items, but can also usually trade with the merchant directly by right-clicking and selecting the appropriate option from the context menu (see Game controls).

Each stock is unique to each player. In other words, when you buy or sell items to a shop, the quantity available to other players remains unchanged. This is a new behaviour for shops as of an update on 2 September, 2009, when previously most shops sold an infinite quantity of items. Players can still be seen ranting about this on the forums.
Currently, there are 36 types of shops, not including The Grand Exchange.
One of the most basic is called a General Store, where players can buy some very basic and ordinary items, and be able to sell almost anything that can be obtained in the game. Essentially if it can be traded with another player, it can be sold to a general store... with a few very minor exceptions related to a couple of quests.
Other shops include Jewellery Shops, Magic Shops, Food Shops, Weapons Shops, Armour Shops, and Shops dedicated to most of the skills. Some of these shops have a few "Free Sample items" which are designed to help out a brand-new player in becoming established within the game.
While it isn't consistent, sometimes shops of the same type have their inventory linked to each other. For example, if you buy arrows from an Archery shop and then travel to another archery shop in another part of the world, the arrows available to you will be only as many as if you simply waited for those arrows to be "restored" to the original stock quantity.
During the early days of playing RuneScape, players would be able to set their own prices on anything they would want to trade with each other, and the NPC merchants in the shops would interact with players almost as if they were another player. When an item was purchased in a shop, the stock available would go down for everybody in the whole game, on a world by world basis. Conversely, if a player sold items to a shop, other players could purchase that item as well. It was very common for players to gather around a general store where virtually anything could be exchanged and traded with each other.
Originally, everything had its set price. For example, if you sold a ruby to a gem shop, the next gem sold to that shop would be sold for the same price. There was a "mark-up" that the merchant made when selling the item to players, but that also was a fixed cost. Eventually this became a bit more complex where the price given to a player for selling multiple items to a shop became gradually less until for some items the shop would not pay anything for you to sell that item to them. As players sold items to a shop in this manner, however, the price others would have to pay to obtain that item would also drop. On the other hand, if one or more players would keep buying the stock from the shop for a particular item, the price of that item would go up in price.
One of the side effects of having the shop system as originally implemented in RuneScape was that bots and other players attempting to manipulate and corner the market on certain items would literally stay put in the shops and be constantly buying out the stock of certain items. This was most commonly seen at the rune shops, but it was also seen at various other kinds of shops in the game as well, particularly for items that players liked to have in bulk but could not be manufactured by another player. Eye of newt is an example of one of these items that is sold in shops. Often what happened is that players desiring to purchase these items either couldn't purchase them, or they would have to obtain them from other means like monster drops. The players buying up the stock in the shops in this manner would often resell them to other players at a rather substantial mark-up in price, often fuelling those who engaged in Real world trading.
In an attempt to try and cut out this aspect of the game and the practice, unlimited stock shops were introduced, removing the need for bots to even bother trying to corner the market. Anybody and everybody could buy as much of most items sold in a shop at the same price. When players would sell things to a shop at this time, those items could be purchased by other players for a cheaper price, but when the "player stock" ran out you would be purchasing from the "main stock" at the more expensive prices.
For some items, it was quite common for players to be making multiple trips in a short period of time transporting a full inventory of certain goods from a shop to a bank for stocking up on their supplies.
A concern was raised by Andrew Gower, the lead design architect for Jagex, regarding how shops operated and that there needed to be a change in the overall design of shops. On 13 April, 2009, Andrew wrote the following in the RSOF:
This update eventually came out on 2 September, 2009 and is the current system for trading with shops called "personalised shops".
While there may be multiple NPCs in a city who buy or sell the same item the NPC who buys or sells for the best price is linked and if the price is the same then the NPC that is most accessible will be linked. When there are multiple prices for an item the best to buy or sell are in bold.
