Shantotto is a non playable character from Final Fantasy XI. She is a Tarutaru Black Mage from the Federation of Windurst and a hero of the Great Crystal War. She is famous for her iconic laugh and her habit of speaking in rhyme. She is a central character in the expansion pack, Final Fantasy XI: A Shantotto Ascension: The Legend Torn, Her Empire Born.
Shantotto has also appeared as a bonus character in the fighting game, Dissidia Final Fantasy.
Shantotto was born to a family of distinguished Tarutaru black mages. Her early childhood was spent "Healing the world and spreading love". As she got older her parents spent hours lecturing her on the dark arts. She practiced her black magic to utter perfection to ensure that her family line was preserved. However, when she was finally honored with the title of mage, her life took a turn for the worse when her parents were divorced and her house was destroyed - not to mention her dog shrank thanks to the shrinking potion it drank.
However, Shantotto kept true to her parent's words, and persevered to become one of the top professors of Windurst. She participated in the Great Crystal War, defending her home nation. After the war, she ascended in the ranks to become Windurst's Minister of Magic, in charge of the Windurst Department of Magic, or the Orastery. She was referred and revered by many as Professor Shantotto.
She later resigned from the Orastery, with Ajido-Marujido succeeding her. She resides at her manor in the Windurst Walls and can still be seen berating adventurers during and after sending them to quests.
Shantotto assumes the identity of Ambassador Karababa to investigate the activities of the Empire of Aht Urhgan. She is accompanied by a Cardian, and fights alongside the player in one battlefield, using powerful Ancient Magic such as Tornado II and Quake II.
Not much is revealed, although the story goes that when Shantotto returned to Windurst after her mysterious disappearance, she went berserk and declared herself the ruler of her own Empire. This sudden change in personality is the drive behind this expansion pack, where players go on to investigate its reason.
Shantotto appears in Dissidia Final Fantasy representing Final Fantasy XI, and plays as a special character, assumed to oppose Gabranth. She has very little influence on the story, being an extra character as well as the only one appearing from Final Fantasy XI, appearing only once in the main storyline.
In the bonus storyline where she appears, Shantotto is the guardian of a sanctum where other scholars and mages are allowed to study in peace. The area has recently been infested by Manikins, prompting Shantotto to task the player to destroy them. As a "reward", Shantotto gives the player a "private lesson" and battles them before going to duel Gabranth, though she can't recall his name.
