Shady Sands was once a small town in the Core Region which then grew to become the capital of the New California Republic and the largest urban area "made from scratch" in the post-nuclear United States. Founded in 2142 by one of the groups emerging from Vault 15, it was jump-started using the GECK[1] , which allowed the dwellers to establish a self-sufficient community and erect buildings. In the 2240s, the city that grew out of Shady Sands became commonly known as the NCR.

Fallout era

By 2161, it was a small, thriving settlement, completely self-sufficient, as they managed to adapt some of the wasteland soil to support crops (corn and cabbage primarily), drill a well to provide them with water and even establish a Brahmin herd. They kept mostly to themselves and were big enough to deter most of the problems the Wasteland presented, primarily Khans and Radscorpions. Both of these threats slowly escalated, as Radscorpions were becoming more and more numerous and aggressive, while the raiders seemed hell bent on bringing them excitement at any cost. Their agriculture, while working, was lacking as well.

These problems were alleviated by the Vault Dweller, who discovered the settlement en route to Vault 15. Initially distrusting, the inhabitants quickly warmed up to the hero as he got rid of the radscorpions and later saved Tandi, Aradesh's daughter, from fates worse than death at the hands of the Raiders.

Many denizens of Shady Sands followed Dharma.

By 2241, Shady Sands had become one of the major towns in the Core Region and the capital of the New California Republic led by Aradesh's daughter, Tandi, and was most often referred to as "NCR" itself.

Appearances in games

The town is typically the first settlement after Vault 13's caves that a player visits. This is due to it being located along the path between Vault 13 and Vault 15, the vault the player is advised to travel to at the start of Fallout 1. If you so happen to run into a merchant outside of Vault 13, he will explain he is traveling to Shady Sands and asks if the player would like escorted there.

Two of Fallout 1's "talking head" characters, Tandi and her father Aradesh, are from here.

It appears in Fallout 2 as "New California Republic".

In Fallout 3, Shady Sands is mentioned in the GNR radio broadcast where the radioplay character Argyle refers to a trick known as the "Shady Sands Shuffle", which is using one's skill at picking pockets to deposit a live hand grenade in the victim's back pocket.
